The project has managed to successfully engage with people who may not otherwise consider themselves 'learners', and who may face significant barriers to accessing more traditional widening participation programmes.

ICAWC 2013 - Taking the Lead with Young Offenders - Maria Gill
Taking the Lead is an education and training project run by Dogs Trust that aims to teach young offenders about dog welfare and responsible dog ownership. The program consists of engaging, interactive workshops covering topics like dog law, care, and safety. Over 400 school pupils received two weeks of basic education in sustainable development, while 240 students received vocational integrated education over extended periods. Additionally, 40 teachers and lecturers were upgraded in teaching sustainable development and 45 construction professionals were introduced to sustainable building solutions. Educational films were made available and a teenager received a sustainable home, with 13 organizations and a meditation teacher involved in working towards world goals through the project.

This paper reflects on the work of Open Educational Practices Scotland (OEPS) a Scottish Funding Councils (SFC) programme to promote the development and use of free and open online educational resources within the informal and formal education sectors in Scotland. Hosted by the Open University (OU) in Scotland (OUiS) it leverages OU experience of Open Educational Resources (OER) in relation to the OUiS long history of working in partnership.
OEPS joins two distinct but overlapping open traditions. Work on OER on the affordances of free and open online content, considerations of licence, platform functionality and the designing digital learning objects in for and through Open Educational Practices (OEP). With approaches from older traditions of open education, based on education as a common good and narratives on equity and social justice. For OEPS the merging of these discourses is based on a decade of OUiS work engaging in a series of diverse partnerships with employers, formal and informal education providers to support those diverse needs.
The paper introduces examples of what this means in for and through practice. Exploring work we have done with Parkinsons UK to develop a series of OER focused on neglected area of curriculum Then looks at the work have done with the Scottish Union Learn (SUL) to promote use of free and open resources by learners in the workplace. Through these examples we explore possibilities of partnerships to bring new voices into the academy, to create supportive structures based on shared values and trust to support uncertain learners. It is our sense this approach allow the benefits of openness to be shared in a just and equitable manner. It then reflects on the issues that arise when you work in-between two senses of open.

Reflecting on Open Educational Practices in Scotland

Exploring work we have done with Parkinsons UK to develop a series of OER focused on neglected area of curriculum Then looks at the work have done with the Scottish Union Learn (SUL) to promote use of free and open resources by learners in the workplace. Through these examples we explore possibilities of partnerships to bring new voices into the academy, to create supportive structures based on shared values and trust to support uncertain learners. It is our sense this approach allow the benefits of openness to be shared in a just and equitable manner. It then reflects on the issues that arise when you work in-between two senses of open.

Reflecting on Open Educational Practices in Scotland

The Student Hub Press Release
The Student Hub has launched EraOnline, a new online student portal aimed at increasing learner productivity and performance through digital learning. The portal provides students access to interactive study tools, on-demand content, assignment support, exam preparation resources, and e-books at low prices. It is seen as a disruptive innovation that can open opportunities for all education stakeholders. The Student Hub was previously supported by the LaunchLab Ideas Programme and Lift-Off Programme, which helped accelerate the company and connect it with angel investor Bill Paladino.

Participants gain cultural experience in countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America. AIESEC supports applicants through an application process of interviews and reviews to assess fit. It was founded in Europe in 1948 and now has a presence in over 100 countries. At Macquarie University, the local AIESEC chapter has around 50 active student members and aims to facilitate international experiences for 50 people annually. In 2013, the chapter sent 43 students abroad on volunteer projects and strengthened various partnerships.

Powell, A., & Barbour, M. K. (2012, March). Tracing international differences in online learning development: An examination of government policies in New Zealand. A paper presented at the annual conference of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education, Austin, TX.
In 2006 the North American Council for Online Learning surveyed the activity and policy relating to primary and secondary e-learning, which they defined as online learning, in a selection of countries. They found most were embracing e-learning delivery of education as a central strategy for enabling reform, modernising schools, and increasing access to high-quality education. While North American countries appeared to be using the internet as a medium to provide distance education at the secondary level longer than most countries, the lack of a guiding vision has created uneven opportunities for students depending on which state or province they live in. In New Zealand, the government has sought to provide a vision or guiding framework for the development of e-learning. In this article we trace that vision by describing three policy documents released by the New Zealand government over the past decade, and how that vision for e-learning has allowed increased development of primary and secondary online learning.

Child participation in Maban, South Sudan
Save the Children operates in Maban County, South Sudan, providing education and child protection programs for refugees and internally displaced people. They incorporate child participation in several ways: (1) establishing children's clubs in schools to give children a voice, (2) engaging children in disaster risk mapping and response planning, and (3) having children help design and present radio programs, booklets, and workshops. However, challenges to greater child participation include low literacy rates, lack of resources to engage all children, cultural practices that reduce children's opportunities, and environmental factors like drought and conflict.

In addition, WE Charity has launched WE Well-being, an initiative that is designed to build a foundation of awareness, understanding, and action surrounding positive well-being. It provides classrooms with curricula and resources to increase mental-health literacy and improve the capabilities of educators to give students support. The initiative also empowers rural students in Africa through careers in medicine and it launched a Faculty of Medicine in rural Kenya to train medical professionals, thus addressing critical gaps in healthcare infrastructure and delivery.
