This document provides information about volunteer opportunities to help sea turtles in Costa Rica. There are three main programs described: 1) The Costa Rica Sea Turtles Caribbean program involves monitoring nesting patterns, recording eggs, and helping hatchlings reach the sea. Volunteers work odd hours including nights. 2) The Sea Turtle Internship program offers 12-week placements to gain experience in conservation and research. Interns assist other volunteers and learn data collection. 3) The Costa Rica Pacific Sea Turtle program has projects along the Pacific coast helping important preservation programs in remote and village locations. All programs require volunteering 6-8 hours daily for 2-6 weeks and no special experience is needed.

Volunteer Sea Turtles Opportunities
Volunteer Sea Turtles, Through the Broader View volunteer
network, we offer several sea turtle volunteer programs. These
include our Costa Rica Sea Turtles Caribbean program, Sea Turtle
Internship program, and our Costa Rica Pacific volunteer program.
Let’s take a look at each opportunity and what you can expect if you
sign up.
Our Costa Rica sea turtles volunteers work in the most important
park in Costa Rica for sea turtles. The entire west half of the
Caribbean is the nesting ground of the green turtle. These fragile
animals lay their eggs on the coast allowing their offspring to
instinctively crawl straight to the sea after hatching.
Volunteers who sign up for our Caribbean program are connected
with a team who asks them to monitor and register nesting
patterns, record the number of eggs laid, aid in moving eggs to the
hatchery, work as beach patrols, and help newborns on their way to
the sea.
No experience is required for this program, but you may be asked to
work odd hours, including in the middle of the night.
Program Requirements: Must stay at least two weeks, but may stay
as long as six weeks. Solo travelers must be at least 18 years old.
2. Must be willing to work for up to 8 hours a day, six days a week.
Groups and individuals are welcome.
Maya Barnes Review: “This program was really amazing and the
work done benefits not only the turtles but the ABV volunteers and
also the locals. Most every local that I talked to about the program
was so thankful for our work, and I think that is very important”.
Sea Turtle Internship Program
For those who wish to overseas and gain experience as an intern,
our internship program is the perfect fit. With the aid of volunteers
through our internship opportunities, we are able to improve the
development of conservation resources as well as investigate better
avenues for doing so.
We work specifically with the biological environment of the Central
American tropics. Volunteers for this role should be individuals who
are seeking a rewarding experience for their gap year project.
During your time with our team, you’ll learn about a culture
different than your own, explore new customs and languages, and
enjoy the rich hospitality of the Costa Rican and Latin American
environment.
Program Requirements: The internship program requires you to
stay for up to 12 weeks. You’ll be tasked with assisting other
volunteers in their assigned roles, learn the methodology for data
collection and basic biology, and be responsible for the maintenance
and use of tools and equipment for the facilities.
Costa Rica Pacific Sea Turtle Program
If you want to be a sea turtles volunteer abroad, our Costa Rica
Pacific sea turtle program is the perfect fit. We offer several
programs which are located along the Pacific Coast with the
3. primary projects existing in the Puntarenas and Guanacaste
provinces.

locales. Volunteers are given the chance to work on important
preservation programs that desperately need assistance.
Program Requirements: No experience is necessary, but keeps in
mind that some shifts occur in the middle of the night. Projects
range from two to six weeks, and you must be willing to work 6-8
hours a day, 6 days per week. You can come as an individual or as
a group.
