4. Place : Le Thor (Vaucluse)
06 - 26 Jul 2019
THE RAMPART, SAVING MEDIEVAL HERITAGE AND
SPLASHING AROUND
Please note this workcamp entails working at height
Le Thor is a farming town and the ancient heartland of both Chasselas wine grapes and
Garance. It has however managed to keep its roots from the past thousand years, such as
the ancient fortified monastery on the Colline de Thouzon hill and its imposing, listed
5. Romanesque church on both sides of its 12th century opus piscatum, herring-bone
ramparts.
Popular legend has it that the town’s name relates to a bull made to kneel several times at
a drinking trough fed by the Sorgue River, where a small statue of the Virgin Mary was
found.
In reality, the term“Tor”was commonly used geographical word used locally in the 12th,
13th and 14th centuries to describe boggy areas.
Le Thor’s ramparts are thought to date back to that same period when there were there
were 4 gates. Now, only one remains, the present-day and recently restored belfry.
Your task will be to help restore these medieval ramparts running alongside the Sorgue
River, in one of the most peaceful spots in the town. The foot of the walls is in a poor state,
but you will help rebuild the ramparts and master the herring-bone, or opus piscatum,
building technique.
As you’ll be just a few kilometres from Avignon, you will of course experience the world’s
biggest theatre festival and enjoy all the cultural events on offer. Other highlights will be
hikes in the Dentelles de Montmirail hills, Mont Ventoux, and the Monts de Vaucluse, a dip
in the Toulourenc River and kayaking on the Sorgue. Special bonus : As the workcamp is
on the banks of the Sorgue, you can always cool down in the water and avoid the worst of
the summer heat in our region.
Type of work: Conventional masonry and rendering
Accomodation : Separate male and female dormitories, in big tents. You can bring your
own tent.
Registration fees : 290€ (170€ programme fee + 120€ country
fee)
Public : Adults
Duration : 3 weeks
6. Place : Mérindol (Vaucluse)
06 - 26 Jul 2019
THE RAMPART, SAVING MEDIEVAL HERITAGE AND
SPLASHING AROUND
Mérindol lies in the heart of the Luberon regional nature park, with views over
the River Durance floodplain, all the way to the Alpilles.
Built around its castle and protected by its ramparts, the village is thought to
date back to the 13th century. No one really knows if Mérindol was destroyed by
the plague or the wars in late medieval times, but by the early 15th century the
village was deserted and unoccupied. Some families who converted to the
7. Lutheran and Reformed faith quickly moved in and subsequently made Mérindol
a symbol of Vaudois repression in Provence. In 1540, the Parliament in Aix
ordered Mérindol to be razed to the ground. It was pillaged and set ablaze, just
like 23 other villages in the Luberon.
Today, the town has expanded to the flat land on the plain, called “Les bastides”
while all that remains of the old village are two sections of wall from the old
castrum.
The association organised a workcamp at Mérindol in 1992, in the area occupied
by the castle and 17 years later the town and the UAC have once again teamed
up, this time to conserve the Lavoir de la Bonne Fontaine wash house.
This wash house is located right next to the future Vaudois museum, in a
peaceful and shaded spot where locals often come to cool down in summer.
You’ll take part in work to restore the wash house and its three basins by clearing
loose material from the walls, applying new lime render and repairing
stonework.
As you are right in the Luberon, you’ll be able to visit some picturesque nearby
villages, as well as the Colorado Provençal, the Gorges d’Opedetteand
excursions to Avignon, Aix en Provence and the market in Apt.
Special bonus : The peacefulness and fresh feel of this workcamp, together with this pretty Provencal village
will appeal to both city folk and country life lovers alike.
Type of work: Conventional masonry and rendering
Hébergement : Separate male and female dormitories in big tents. You can
bring your own tent.

fee)

8. Place : Lauris (Vaucluse)
06 - 26 Jul 2019
CREATING OUTSTANDING GARDENS
Please note this workcamp entails working at height
The village of Lauris sits atop a rocky ridge, on a site that has been occupied
since Neolithic times, given the relics of axes and other flint tools found in the
19th century.
A chateau, first built in the early 11th century, towers over the village making it
one of the iconic sights in the Luberon, between Pertuis, Cavaillon and Apt. Each
year, thousands of visitors are drawn to Lauris’ chateau, as well as its narrow
lanes, fountains and panoramic views of the Alpilles, Luberon, Mont Ventoux and
the Montagne de Lure.
9. The chateau was extensively rebuilt until the 18th century and has, for the last 20
years, provided the setting for a garden on its foot slopes featuring plants grown
on dry-stone terraces that were used to dye cloth. The garden is a genuine
botanical conservancy with more than 250 plants species used for dyes, paints,
cosmetics and food.
This year marks the inaugural volunteer workcamp and you will help make
improvements to one of Lauris’ lanes by replacing the render on one of the
village’s retaining walls.
The wall is built from cut stone and rubble and you’ll need to remove the old
cement render to repoint the wall with a lime render.
Given that Lauris is right in the heart of the Luberon, you will be visiting a host of
famous sites such as Gordes, the Colorado Provencal, Sénanque and Saignon
abbeys, traditional Luberon markets, as well as olive groves and lavender fields.
Special bonus : You’ll also be able to appreciate Lauris’ small squares, fountains, mansion houses and
terraces that all help make this such a pleasant place to live, especially in the summer.
Type of work: Conventional masonry and rendering
Accommodation: Separate male and female dormitories, in big tent. You can
bring your own tent.
Registration fees : 290€ (170€ programme fee + 120€ country
fee)

DRY STONE TREASURES IN THE TINÉE VALLEY,
WHERE NATURAL AND BUILT HERITAGE MEET
The village of La Tour sits high above the Tinée Valley, some 50 km from Nice,
and boasts breath-taking panoramic views over the surrounding hills and
mountains.
You can see plenty of Italian influences in La Tour, which is also a starting point
for a range of hiking and walking trails. Indeed, we’ve been working with the
11. village council since 2017 to rebuild and improve the hiking trail between La
Tour sur Tinée and Brec d’Utelle. After discovering a hidden 17th century cobble-
covered trail, our volunteer teams were then able to try out dry stone building
techniques and rebuild several retaining walls along the trail.
The task this year is to reinstate another retaining wall, thereby adding to the
achievements of previous workcamps.
You’ll get to grips with this traditional building technique as well as learn how to
do things right so that your efforts stand the test of time.
Special bonus: Do you love nature and the great outdoors? Well, this is just the workcamp is for you! You’ll
be a stone’s throw from the Mercantour National Park and there are plenty of local walking trails as well as
rivers and springs, like the Vallon de Cramassour.
Type of work: Dry stone masonry
Accommodation: Separate male and female dormitories in a permanent
building.
Registration fees : 290€ (170€ programme fee + 120€ country
fee)
Public : Adults
Duration : 3 weeks
12. Place : Volonne (Alpes de Haute Provence)
13 Jul 2019 - 2 Aug 2019
CHEMIN DE RONDE, A VILLAGE LANE MAKE-OVER.
Given that Volonne sits at the confluence of the Durance and La Grave rivers, the
village’s name is thought to come from the Celtic word, “Vel Aon”, meaning “to
the water”. Volonne’s main feature is two 13th and 16th century towers that cast
their gaze down over the village nestled below at the foot of a sun-drenched
rocky outcrop, leading some people to call it the “Petit Nice” of the Alps.
The Chemin de Ronde is part of the village’s old ramparts that provided a
defensive system for the village, between the two towers. The houses projecting
13. out over the ramparts were subsequently added to these old fortifications and
form the boundary of a historic, partially covered walkway.
The municipality has been particularly keen to safeguard its heritage and
enhance the village. As such, it has been working with volunteers since 2016 to
make improvements to the Chemin de Ronde.
This year the work will reach completion as the cobblestone lane and restoration
of a vaulted passage with lime render provide the finishing touches that you will
make to this lane.
Once the work is done for the day, you’ll have the chance to discover the
Ammonite Road, known by Geologists the world over, visit the Romanesque
monastery of Ganagobie, the Penitents des Mées and go for hikes in the foothills
of the Alps and the Luberon, where you’ll be able to swim in the Verdon Gorges
and surrounding lakes.
Special bonus : If you want a bit of lush, leafy greenery, this workcamp at the gateway to the Alps is just for
you!
Type of work : Dry stone masonry, rendering and cobblestone path.
Accommodation : Separate male and female dormitories in a permanent
building, you can bring your own tent.

fee)

ROYAL GUNPOWDER WORKS WATERMILLS –
SPRUCING UP OUR INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
The old Royal gunpowder works lies at the north end of the Etang de Berre,
between the Alpilles hills and the Camargue. The 118-hectare site, or
“Poudrerie”as it is known, was built in the 17th century to supply King Louis XIV’s
armies.
Production ceased in 1974, leaving the site unoccupied and closed to the public
for some 30 years to harbour a dazzlingly diverse range of plants and trees.
15. Consecutive directors at the gunpowder works used to live on-site and tended
to plant trees from around the world. As a result, Atlas Cedars, Chinese Privet,
Ginkgo Biloba, Sequoia and American Persimmon all grow together among the
remains of this ancient gunpowder works, which also experienced several
dramatic explosions during its time.
The “Poudrerie” was acquired by the French coastal protection agency, the
Conservatoire du Littoral,in 2001 and the site still features several key buildings
where gunpowder was made. Ongoing work for several years now has
helpedrecover the gunpowder works and opened it to the public, with several
kilometres of botanical trails for nature-lovers to discover a wide array of
untouched flora.
For the last few years, volunteers have been working on improvements to
various buildings in the grounds and after recently restoring a wash house and
the Saint Vincent Chapel, we are now turning our attention, in this sixth
consecutive year, to restoring the watermills.
So, in 2019 we’ll continue our task to preserve this industrial heritage by starting
to replace the internal wall rendering in the upper watermill.
Once the work is done, there will be a wide range of leisure activities to choose
from, such as hikes in the Camargue, the Luberon and the Alpilles, excursions to
Marseille, Aix-en-Provence or Arles, and the chance to get up close to the flora
and fauna in the grounds.
Special bonus : You’ll be living right in the park itself!
Type of work: Conventional masonry and rendering
Accommodation: On-site, in a permanent building fitted with basic male and
female dormitories. You can also bring your own tent, if you like.
Registration fees : 290€ (170€ programme fee + 120€ country
fee)
Duration : 3 weeks
16. Place : Malaucene (Vaucluse)
03 - 23 Aug 2019
THE PINK PAVILLION, A 19TH CENTURY FOLLY
Malaucene sits on the north side of Mont Ventoux and is thought to have been a
settlement since prehistoric times. In the 14th century, Pope Clement V made it his
summer residence, choosing a location close to a spring and the Groseau Chapel.
The imposing SaintMichel Church was also built around the same period, while for
the last 700 years, the town has held one of the oldest markets in Provence, every
Wednesday.
The town regularly features in the Tour de France cycle race and many cyclists
throng to Malaucene to test themselves against the Giant of Provence.
17. After having rebuilt several dry-stone walls around Groseau in 2018, this year
you’ll help make improvements to the Pavillon du Colombier, also called “the Pink
Pavilion” due to the colour of its wall render.
It was built in 1865 and was part of a large agricultural estate, serving as a
reception venue amid nice gardens. It was listed as folly in the 19th century and
story has it that lovers used to sometimes meet there.
The building currently has no roof and as a result the stonework is rapidly
deteriorating, soto pave the way for a more far-reaching restoration programme,
you’ll get the ball rolling by reinforcing and restoring the pavilion’s perimeter walls.
A whole host of activities await you once work is done for the day, such as hikes
on Mont Ventoux, exploring the amazing Gorges du Toulourenc, as well as
excursions to nearby towns and villages of Vaison la Romaine, Bedoin, the wine-
making towns of Vacqueyras and Gigondas and even a visit to the famous theatre
festival in Avignon.
Special bonus : Last year, we worked for 6 weeksin Malaucène, so you’ll have all the inside information from
our ex-volunteers about all the best things to see and do in the local area!
Type of work : Conventional masonry and rendering
Accommodation : On-site, in a permanent building fitted with male and female
dormitories.

18. Place : Rasteau (Vaucluse)
03 - 23 Aug 2019
THE PINK PAVILLION, A 19TH CENTURY FOLLY
While Rasteau is mainly known for its wine-making heritage, it is nevertheless a
hilltop village, just like those elsewhere in Provence, with outstanding views of
Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail hills.
This hilltop site is thought to have been inhabited since prehistoric times,
although the first references to a village appear in the 11th century.
The castle that adjoins SaintDidier Churchon the hilltop may also date back to
this period although little remains of this building today.
19. Houses in the village tumble down the hill and envelope the 18th century votive
Notre Dame des Vignerons Chapel and the Place Lapparent. The “place”, or
square, was named after its donator who wanted the village to keep it as a play
area for children and other festivities, but your focus will be on the parish
garden, located below SaintDidier Church which was recently acquired by the
village council.
At the moment it is covered in weeds, but it still has an unmistakable charm, with
some old wells, a rostrum and a small colonnade.
This workcamp is a proper development project and involves lime mortar and
dry-stone masonry techniques, as well as clearing the undergrowth.
You’ll also have the chance to discover the local area which is brimming with
cultural, historical and natural heritage. There’s the ancient town of Vaison la
Romaine, the Arc de Triomphe in Orange and the papal city of Avignon, as well
as hiking on Mont Ventoux, the Giant of Provence, or in theDentelles de

THE CITADEL, A TIME-HONOURED WORKCAMP
Saint-Tropez is known for its port, beach, police and last but not least, its citadel!
While it has reigned over the town for 400 years, our teams of volunteers have
been carefully working to conserve and restore it for the last 20 summers.
The citadel is a pre-Vauban construction and remains one of the only sizeable
monuments of this type on the Var coastline.
The first reference to it dates back to 1583 when a record refers to a building on
the “Colline des Moulins” hill. Later, in 1607 the castle keep was completed, with
its thick hexagonal walls encircling a large internal courtyard.
25. Today, the citadel houses the town’s maritime history museum, where visitors can
learn about famous seafaring explorers as well as the men and women who lived
in the town and port.
This year, you’ll be able to get to grips with dry-stone building techniques with
our highly-experienced trainer who knows these walls inside out. You’ll work with
her to continue restoring a retaining wall looking out to sea, with a footpath
below it.
As well as visiting various seaside resorts on the Côte d’Azur, we’ll take you away
from the coast and off the beaten track to explore the Var countryside, visit the
Verne Monastery, hike in the Massif des Maures or take an excursion to the Salins
d’Hyères sea salt ponds.
Special bonus : The workcamp will be in September, so you’ll still be able to
enjoy the warm summer weather but without the crowds that throng to the Côte
