Beware the experts
Have you ever tried something new to improve your lot in life?
Like a business venture, a diet, an exercise regime or a
philosophy. If you have, soon after you’ll find a bunch of folks
who pose as experts but are really just naysayers trying to keep
you in the status quo. Keeping you in the status quo may be
unfair because the ‘experts’ (typically, your family and friends)
really just want to protect you from failing. The problem, in most
cases is that whilst they are well meaning, they have no prior
experience of the adventure you want to embark on. They may
have heard from a friend of a friend that this diet doesn’t work or
that business venture is a waste of time. But, they haven’t
actually been exposed to your idea in any great detail. Remember
opinions are cheap, especially ill-informed ones. I heard someone
say this about opinions that I find apt: “If you have an opinion
about my life; which of the bills will you be paying”.
Here are two examples of other people’s opinions that changed
the destiny of a whole bunch of people:
- Joe Green walked away from the $200-billion Facebook.
When Mark Zuckerberg asked Green to drop out of the Ivy
League university to build the social networking site with him, he
said no because his father disapproved.
- Excite passed up buying Google for $750 000 in 1999
thanks to advice from its experts. Google is now worth in excess
of $382-billion
So, beware the experts. Listen to them with a bit of
circumspection and cynicism. They don’t always have the inside
track and could very easily stop your dreams in their tracks.

Hamming Distance and Data Compression of 1-D CAcsitconf
In this paper an application of von Neumann correction technique to the output string of some
chaotic rules of 1-D Cellular Automata that are unsuitable for cryptographic pseudo random
number generation due to their non uniform distribution of the binary elements is presented.
The one dimensional (1-D) Cellular Automata (CA) Rule space will be classified by the time run
of Hamming Distance (HD). This has the advantage of determining the rules that have short
cycle lengths and therefore deemed to be unsuitable for cryptographic pseudo random number
generation. The data collected from evolution of chaotic rules that have long cycles are
subjected to the original von Neumann density correction scheme as well as a new generalized
scheme presented in this paper and tested for statistical testing fitness using Diehard battery of
tests. Results show that significant improvement in the statistical tests are obtained when the
output of a balanced chaotic rule are mutually exclusive ORed with the output of unbalanced
chaotic rule that have undergone von Neumann density correction.

A case for being bored. Latest article in the Volksrust Recorder -24 April 2015. Is helicopter parenting dumbing down our children and producing less creative adults?
I was thinking about North and South America the other day as one does when one is sitting in Benoni at a Spur restaurant.
For some reason I was thinking about why North America was ‘wealthy’ and that South America wasn’t. One is ‘first world’ and the other is well … ‘third world’.
I have a notion that when the Spanish settled in South America they went there for the gold. When the Pilgrim Fathers went to North America they went for God.
The focus on spirit and something bigger than themselves and gold gave the Pilgrims an unshakeable purpose. They went to America to find the religious freedom they couldn’t get in Britain at the time.
I think that’s what made all the difference.
So, maybe this is true for us too. When we’re so focused on our paycheques and lose sight of what’s important we have third-world thinking.
I believe that the human being was put on this earth for something more than just the gold.
We were put here to answer a calling and to follow a path with heart. Of course, the trick is for each of us to find that calling in our own way.
And, that’s the tough part. To find our purpose we need to take that road less travelled by and go in search of knowledge. We need to use the knowledge to fight and overcome our inner battles so that we can find the authentic essence within in us. We need to be clear as to how we can make something meaningful in the short space of time we have.
I, like you, live in the real world too. So, I’m not against ‘gold’ at all. I’m mindful that when we feel insecure because we don’t have the means, purpose and meaning can fall by the wayside. I’m just saying that gold must not be our focus because there’s no way it can make us happy, ultimately.
In our striving for purpose and meaning I’m of the opinion that we would be better served by focusing on Saraswati (the goddess of knowledge, music and art) and not on Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth).
You already know how it works, don’t you? When we focus on Saraswati, Lakshmi gets curious and follows.
When you find your purpose your heart will sing and good fortune will follow.
AES helps you believe in better. This presentation is part manifesto and part employee handbook. It’s about who we are, and what we aspire to become (and we continue to work hard to get there).
I’ll bet you, like me received many good wishes for 2015.
Of course, this happens every year, doesn’t it? We’re told to set goals, make new year’s
resolutions and kick-start our lives.
This is going to be your year, isn’t it?
But, if you’re like me, you might have the post New Year party blues because you too
realise that with all your good intentions of turning over a new leaf and making 2015 the
year where you’re going to make a difference, just isn’t going to happen.
It didn’t happen last year, nor the year before that nor 10 years prior. For me at least. I
still haven’t become this super human who was going to dent the universe (even though
I had every intention of doing so).
My quest to become a better human in 2015 faltered around January 3. I realised that my
plans for better relationships with my family, improving my financial situation, getting
that perfect body, contributing more to my community, learning more and being more
were ... well were just words, just good intentions.
I think the challenge for me is that I live in the future and not in the moment. Because if
you really think about it, January 1, 2015 is just another day, another moment in time in
our journey. Like every other day, it is the only day we have a chance of making a
difference in our lives and in the lives of those we love.
Perhaps we should focus more on being the best human we can be on every day that is
gifted to us rather than being so future-focused.
Perhaps if we are the best mommy/daddy that we can be on this day, the best employee
that we can be on this day and the best leader we can be on this day (every day) we will
see a shift happen in our lives.
I believe if we do this, the future will sort itself out. The ‘one day I will be ...’ will become
‘today’, the ‘I wish I could ...’ will become ‘I did it’ and our dreams for our future will
become our reality today.

Form Vs Intent
Many students are of the view that they just need to pass their exams with the bare minimum allowed marks.
If they pass, they'll get that high school certificate or their university degree. The idea being that a high school certificate will get them into university and that a university degree will get them a job.
They miss the point of the exercise. It is not about the result but the process. The trick to learning is to master a subject, not to aim for the bare minimum.
So that when entering the job market, you're actually useful and don't have to be retrained from scratch.
Also, going for the bare minimum is the genesis of the mediocrity virus that proliferates our world. The less we expect of ourselves, the less we do and the less we expect of others.
We don't strive to stand out and make our mark in this world. We strive to fit in so that we are never challenged in any way.
The same is true for our lives and our search to connect with our creator.
We do the bare minimum. We go to church once a week. We say our five daily prayers. We practice Shabbat every Friday.
We do all these things as we're taught. And, we're taught to do them with perfect form. But that's all it is, is form. What's missing is the intention. Doing form to connect with our creator is the bare minimum.
The trick is to master this existence and put everything into doing so. The trick is to practice every day for the moment of our death. Every moment gives us that chance.
Just going through rituals by rote and doing it under the cover of a mosque, synagogue or church is not going to help 'buy our way into heaven'. The couple of minutes we spend on our rituals won't cut it.
The only point of rituals are to focus our attention on the moment so that we are aware of the presence of the creator. So that we can be in awe and gratitude and humility that we have been so blessed.
Our true self comes out in the way we relate to the world and the rest of humanity in it. Every moment gives us a chance to be graceful, grateful and use the muscle of the heart to be useful, kind and beautiful to others. Every opportunity to be kind gets us closer to our creator.
Don't look to the heavens to find your creator. Look to every human being you touch and you'll see the divine in them. You'll meet the creator.
Our intention defines us, not our form. Follow your rituals but most of all be human, be kind, be in awe and be grateful. This is the only chance you and I have of touching the creator.
This is a motivational piece of text on how to create your magnum opus or masterpiece. But, you don't just have one masterpiece in you. The trick is to discover that you have unlimited magna opera in you ...
Our galaxy is called the Milky Way … home to 100 billion stars. Multiply that by 10 trillion galaxies and that’s an incomprehensible number of stars out there. A gazillionith of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction are on a playground called Earth.
You’ll find more than 2 600 of them embedded in sidewalks across an 18 block radius in a place you and I know as the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
This is where people famous in the world of entertainment go to be immortalised in terrazzo and brass.
Like all stars, they wane. If you walk along some of the sidewalks, you won’t see shiny stars. What you’ll see is grit and grime encrusting them. You’ll see buskers and homeless people sitting on or around them.
These stars have been trodden on by billions of shoes since 1960 when the first star was laid for Joanne Woodward. These shoes carry the weary feet, broken hearts and shattered dreams of countless people.
People who wish they too can have a star on Hollywood Boulevard. A star that too can be stepped on.
Last night I attended an enchanting book talk with Piers Cruickshanks, author of Confluence: Beyond the River with Siseko Ntondini.
It’s a story of how Piers and Siseko, who against all odds, won a gold medal at the Dusi Canoe Marathon. (Finishing 7th).
But it’s really a story of the challenges of being human and triumphs of the human spirit when two cultures confluence.
Piers shares a vignette where he was irritated that Siseko pitched up late for practice. For Piers it was easy to get to the dam. For Siseko – not so much – because of the transport challenges that he and countless thousands face every day.
I can’t speak for Piers, but if it were me I would’ve been humbled and maybe slightly embarrassed at my ‘white privilege’ … him, then a 39 year old English teacher with a young family and the ‘perfect life’ and 18 year old Siseko clawing his way up from the streets of Soweto.
Rachel
I had a similar incident around 10 years ago. Rachel, my domestic assistant of 15 years was late again. I reprimanded her for being tardy. Her words to me made an indelible impression, “I get up every morning at 4 am and have to catch two taxis to get to you. I’m sorry, sometimes the taxis run late.”
In those days I was paying her R150 per day including transport. I realised that she was spending half her wages on transport. So that meant that she had R75 left over for food, toiletries and paraffin for her and her children. I don’t know about you … even in those days I could drop R150 in a heartbeat on something frivolous and not even think about it.
We don’t know what is happening with the human working for us, sitting next to us on the bus, at our work or in our schools. We don’t know what drama is playing out in their lives. Are they hungry? Are they sick? Have they lost a loved one? Are they going through marital strife? Are they depressed? Are they destitute?
I try and walk in the other’s shoes. I try and feel what the other is feeling. Sometimes I get it right … mostly I get it wrong.
Choice
All I know is that I’m where I am by the grace of the Creator. I could’ve been born to different parents, in a different country and under different circumstances. My life would have been totally different – it could have been better or worse (whatever that means).
So, I’m here now, in this moment. I can only control how I feel and how I react to my situation now. Other than that, I have little control of the outcome of this human experience.
I choose gratitude. I choose awe. I choose to withhold judgment. I choose curiosity. I choose to see every human as the same. And, I know that every human hides a secret pain and untold hope. This humbles me because I hold the heart of everyone I come into contact with in my hand. It’s in my power to break that heart or grow that heart. It’s in your power too.
When I was a young boy in the Karoo, one of my tasks was to prime the water pump. I had to push a lever down several times to prime the pump with water so that it would function properly.
In essence, I was kickstarting the pump so that it could produce water all day long.
Humans are like water pumps. We need to prime ourselves so that we can be effective throughout the day. This is where morning rituals and habits become invaluable. The only time when I'm selfish is the first two hours after waking. This is when I spend time on myself only. I've realised that spending time on myself is not selfish but rather, self-preserving. That time alone centres me so that I can tackle each day with vim and vigour.
Here's a snapshot of my ideal morning routine. I said 'ideal' because in many instances I miss it by a mile. I know when I miss my rituals my day's off-kilter and I'm not as sharp as I could be.

I ask myself why some people are the architects of genocide and acts against humanity.
Why do they unleash untold terror, destruction and misery onto the human race?
How can someone be so cruel?
Do they have a soul?
These are all questions that plague and frustrate me because there's no simple answer.
Is it because we allow them to thrive because of our indolence and ignorance. On 12 March 1938, the German Wehrmacht entered Austria and marched into Vienna. The German writer, Frederick Rech wrote: It was a day on which 'the criminal has been let go unpunished and made to appear more powerful than he is'.
This notion plays out in South Africa and Africa. As citizens we have become victims of our own indolence, greed and fear. We've created and allowed Frankenstein's monsters to dictate our lives.
Mugabe, Amin, Zuma, Motseneng, al-Assad,Taylor, Gupta, al-Bashir, Bell Pottinger and its attack dog, Georghegan.
On the international stage, there are the usual suspects: Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Tse-Sung, Bush, Blair and more recently, Putin and Trump.
Is it because they're homicidal maniacs, megalomaniacs, narcissists or psychopaths? That this may be a part of their nature that they cannot fight. My grandfather who bred mules and horses, would look a humans the same way as he looked at horseflesh. Sometimes he'd look at someone and say "Die saad is sleg gegooi." (The seed is badly thrown). These poor creatures are lost to themselves and to us because their genetic makeup has destined them to act out in this way. They find it almost impossible to fight their true nature.
They're all around us, of course. They're CEOs, managers, mothers and fathers and everything in-between.
Or is it as simple as that they don't have a boss to guide them? We all need a boss to protect us and guide us. Most of us have that boss. Be it a parent, a prefect at school, a supervisor, a manager, a managing director and a chairman. Even the Pope has a boss ... God. Unfortunately, because our bosses are as fractured as we are, we don't always get it right. But, at least there is someone that gives us a moment to pause before we act only in our interest.
I have a notion, that the individuals I've mentioned don't have a boss. They don't have someone to guide them. They believe their own PR and they think they can do no wrong. They have nobody to put them straight, chastise them or build them up. They have no compass because they think they are the compass. They're spiritually bereft because if they had an inkling that they're far from perfect, that they make mistakes and that they need guidance, they'd turn to their ultimate boss ... their creator. But they don't, because they think they're omnipotent.
Of course, now I wonder ... does God have a boss?
Last week I attended a running clinic by Norrie Williamson. He said something to the effect that running doesn’t cause injuries.
Running reveals bad habits that we havepicked up over time. Like sitting at a computer all day long. Sitting at the wrong angle facing the computer. Driving everywhere and not walking. Poor sleeping patterns. Incorrect running technique.
Wrong shoes. And, so on.
Essentially, running reveals our flaws.
Welcome to the Program Your Destiny course. In this course, we will be learning the technology of personal transformation, neuroassociative conditioning (NAC) as pioneered by Tony Robbins. NAC is used to deprogram negative neuroassociations that are causing approach avoidance and instead reprogram yourself with positive neuroassociations that lead to being approach automatic. In doing so, you change your destiny, moving towards unlocking the hypersocial self within, the true self free from fear and operating from a place of personal power and love.

Want Hy is in beheer.
Vrede, Pastoor Johan Venter
Have you ever tried something new to improve your lot in life?
Like a business venture, a diet, an exercise regime or a
philosophy. If you have, soon after you’ll find a bunch of folks
who pose as experts but are really just naysayers trying to keep
you in the status quo. Keeping you in the status quo may be
unfair because the ‘experts’(typically, your family and friends)
really just want to protect you from failing.
Volksrust/Seme Chamber of Commerce was launched recently. With the initial spreading
of the word, it is obvious that a lot of people (Business Owners) question the initiative
and espescially the benefits. The Volksrust/Seme Business Chamber, envisioned an area
where business’ will thrive and benefitting actively participating businesses in equal
opportunities for our District. In short creating a better living for all. I took some time to
create a list of Pros and Cons for joining a Business Chamber, and we hope as Volksrust/
Seme Business Chamber to welcome you as part of the organised Business Community of
the Volksrust/Wakkerstroom/Amersfoort/Perdekop area.
Pros of Joining a Chamber of Commerce:
Publicity boost:
Your business increases exposure in online and offline formats. Did you know that
chambers run programs that welcome new residents to the community? Were you aware
that members receive an online listing (with a link) to help interested parties find you in
searches? Both of those opportunities alone could give your company a significant boost
in buzz. That’s something to think about!
Networking opportunities:
You’ll be in direct contact with other professionals. The Business Chamber put you in
direct contact with potential leads. Expos and conventions will frequently take place in
communities. Business Chamber members will typically gain booth access to those
conventions before non-members, and sometimes at a worthwhile discount.
Furthermore, the Business Chamber put you in direct contact with other professionals in
the area for networking purposes. Networking can be a pain if you cold call or blindly
attend events hoping to make new connections, but it’s infinitely easier when you’re in
the same room as area business owners for meetings.
Marketing Opportunities:
You have the chance to directly market to other business owners who may require your
services/products. Business Chambers have access to mailing lists that you wouldn’t be
able to access otherwise. Those mailing lists are especially helpful if your business is
primarily B2B (Business to Business), because you’ll be able to directly contact or visit
the person in charge instead of throwing darts in the dark hoping to reach someone with
buying power.
Also keep in mind that chambers refer their members’ products and services over non-
members’, which means that you’ll also gain referral opportunities as a paying member.
Consolidated Business Voice:
The Business Chamber is a stuctured institution consisting of economically active
business people and enterprises with the purpose of creaing joint bargaining power,
serving group interests and joining forces to create wealth and a buisess-friendly
environment in a region.
Training&Information:
What does a slow economic rate of return mean, where does local fit it with national or
even global? How do I create a online footprint, how do I implement a turn-around
strategy for my business? What impact does the latest changes to legislation (PAIA,
Labour Law, SARS, Retirement Funds vs Provident Funds) have on my business. The
Business Chamber provides its members with guidance and training where necessary and
serves as a link with Ahi National. The Business Chamber therefore serves as mouthpiece
and representative of business in the local interest.
Cons of Joining a Chamber of Commerce:
Membership fees:
Up-front cost gives people pause, especially newly-established businesses with low seed
money. Money isn’t everything, but it’s sure helpful for businesses with minimal starting
costs. The membership fees associated with chambers of commerce deter many from
taking the plunge. How much up-front cash are we talking?
ROI urgency:
Chambers are not a magical solution because hard work is still required. If face-to-face
time with competitors sounds dreadful, then you may not enjoy chamber meetings. This
point isn’t really a con that chambers can do anything about — it’s more of a
misconception. Paying your dues and sitting on your hands probably won’t net you any
new clients! You can’t think of a chamber as a one-stop solution. You have to put in the
work after you’ve put in the money, just as you would with any other effort. In other
words, you may not see immediate results from simply joining a chamber, but that’s
perfectly normal. The long-term benefits have vast potential to balance that out.
Potential conflicts:
Sometimes you’ll be face to face with competitors. If sitting in a room with your toughest
competitor on the other side of the table sounds intimidating, then you may not like
belonging to a chamber. Depending on what type of business you’re running, there’s a
chance you’ll face competition straight on when you’re in meetings. It’s important to
remember that chambers of commerce not only network with one another, but they also
work together to coordinate special community events and fundraisers. Sometimes you’ll
have to band with competing businesses in order to make the area a better place to live; if
you’re not cool with working together, then this could be a major deterrent.
So, depending on how you look at it, these cons might not be negative at all after you
take the time to analyze them…Should you join a chamber of commerce, or not?
The choice is up to you. However, I don’t think a few hundred rand is a bad deal for all of
the pros attached to chambers of commerce, nor do I think that hard work and potential
conflicts are much to worry your pretty head about. Membership dues, the main con on
this list, are intimidating for new businesses and it’s very likely that your company won’t
be able to justify them right away. That’s perfectly okay! And remember if you sign up
now, you get 3-months members free.In addition you will also miss the most likely hike in
membership fees due after the first AGM in March 2015.The key is to make sure you
carefully measure the pros and cons for yourself before making a decision. It’ll be
different for everyone.
