Benjamin Jonson was a 17th century English playwright, poet, and actor born in London in 1572. His most famous works include the comedies Volpone and The Alchemist. Volpone, set in Venice, tells the story of a wealthy man, Volpone, who pretends to be dying in order to deceive others into making him their heir for personal gain, assisted by his servant Mosca. Their schemes escalate until they are finally revealed and punished in court.
