VOLLEYBALL
MAPEH 8
Volleyball, which was originally called mintonette, was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. Morgan, an
alumnus of Springfield College, designed the game as a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.
The first net, however, was borrowed from tennis. It was only two meters high.
Unknown to many, the offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in 1916 here in the
Philippines. Because the sport was introduced and became popular in countries outside the United States, the
United StatesVolleyball Association (USVBA) was formed in 1928 to standardize the rules and equipment for
tournaments.Volleyball became an Olympic sport during the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Germany.
BASIC SKILLS
The service skill is used to serve the ball going to the opponent’s court. It a also
serves as the start of the play. There are many types of service, namely, jump
serve, topspin, and floater but the common service methods in volleyball are the
underhand serve and the overhead serve.
The underhand serve is the easiest method to learn. This service method makes
it much easier to control the ball.
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW
TO DO THE UNDERHAND SERVE:
1. Stand upright outside the court. If you’re right-handed, place your left foot
slightly forward. Hold the ball using your left hand in front of you at the waist
level near the right side.
2. Slightly lean your shoulder and trunk forward. Curl your right fingers to create
the base of the hand for hitting the ball.
3. Swing your right arm backward and swing it forward to make the serve.
4. Determine where to land the ball in your opponents’ side of the court. Hit the
ball at its bottom. Drop your left hand, and transfer your weight on the left foot
when you make the hit. Make a follow-through.
The overhead serve is preferred by many players, especially by more experienced
athletes. High school and varsity players apply this method during tournaments
because the ball travels so fast, making it hard for the defensive team to receive
or toss the ball around, or return the ball across the net.
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO
EXECUTE THE OVERHEAD SERVE:
1. If you’re right t handed, place your left foot slightly forward.
2. Hold the ball with your left hand. Position it in front of your body near the right of
the chest.
3. Using your left hand, toss the ball up at a height above the head, and then swing your
right hand to hit the ball. When tossing the ball, transfer your weight to your right foot.
4. Swing your right arm forward up following the direction of the ball.
5. Determine the landing area of the ball.Approach and hit the ball toward the target. In
doing the approach, make sure that you will do three steps forward, and then jump.
Make a follow-through.
The pass or dig is an important skill in volleyball. It would be hard to win a
competition if you lack this skill.
HERE ARE THE STEPS TO EXECUTE THIS
SKILL PROPERLY:
1. Do an open or ready stance by bending your knees and spreading your feet
apart. This position is essential to receive a served ball easily. For right-handed
players, put your right foot slightly forward.
2. Place your right hand over your left hand in a slant position. Using your right
hand, curl your left fingers around to form a fist.Your thumbs on top should
cover the other fingers. The forearm creates a platform where you should hit the
ball. Do not Swing your arms upward, but be sure that the forearm has contact
with the ball. The dig helps you control the ball and drive it toward an open
target area.
Blocking is a defensive skill used to prevent the ball to get inside the court and
hit the ground.
TO DO THIS, FOLLOW THESE
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Stand near and in front of the net where you believe the ball might pass. Bend
your knee with your feet apart at shoulder width.
2. Put your arms up. Be ready to spring when the ball is about to pass over the
net. Blocking needs a lot of timing and strategic positioning. You have to properly
execute this technique to prevent your opponent from scoring.
A spike is an offensive attack done by forcing the ball to hit the ground without being touched by the opponent. It
is a technique that makes it difficult for your opponent to return the ball during a rally. It is done with the use of
optimum power or strength to hit the e ball downward.
Doing the spike can be perfected by executing a few steps continually and by jumping with both feet and hitting
the ball at the same time. This is done so the ball enters the opposite court at a fast clip.Timing is important. For a
right-handed beginner, learn the last two steps first. It is done by moving a step with your right foot, followed by
your left, and then hitting the ball. Spiking should be done when the arm is extended at a precise level above the
ball. Then by using your wrist, execute a snapping motion downward to the opponents’ court.
The ball setting technique is used in an offensive play, particularly before the
spiker attacks the ball. The setter executes a ready stance while scouting the
target landing area. Fingers in both hands should be spread above the head,
particularly near the forehead. Form a triangle using the thumbs, index, and
middle fingers. The rest of the fingers are spread. Be Sure that both hands do not
touch each other. On contact with the ball, extend your arms and legs to toss
the ball.
HOW TO PLAY
Two opposing teams are required for a volleyball game to start. Six players for
each team should be on the court. The game starts with a toss of a coin,The
team who wins has the first option to choose a desired court or ball. If the team
prefers a particular area to occupy, the team becomes the receiving team. If the
team chooses the ball, the team will be the first to serve. The team with the ball
becomes the offensive team.
The game starts with a serve. The server stands behind the service or back line.
The ball should pass above the net and between two plastic antennas that serve
as net markers.
Each team is allowed to touch the ball for three Consecutive times only. The frst
to touch should not be allowed to hold it again, but another teammate has to
toss it to another or drive it to the opposite Court.A defensive block is not a
hit. This means three. Hits are still allowed for the offensive team to continue the
attack.
SCORING IS DONE WHEN ONE OF THE
FOLLOWING HAPPENS:
1.The served ball lands outside the court.
2.The ball hits a teammate or falls on the court.
3.A team member committed a foul or violated some rules, such as inadvertently
getting inside the opposite court passing under the net.
The first team to score 25 points makes a set. In case of a deuce or tie, the team
to make two-point advantage wins the game and makes a set.A team should
make two sets to win the match.
Common violations committed by players include stepping on a line during a
serve, failure of the offensive team to drive the ball over the net, illegally hitting
the ball (e.g., carrying or touching the ball with the palm of the hand, throwing),
or touching the top of the net with any part of the players' body while the ball is
at play (Note: If the ball hits the net with a strong force that the net is pushed
and touches an opposing player, no foul is committed and the ball remains in
play).
Overreaching (a move wherein the hands are extended above the net and into a
portion of the opposing side) may not be considered a foul when the drive was a
follow-through or when the ball, which is still in the opposite side, was blocked
successfully. (Note:The blocking player must not be in contact with the ball until
the opposing player who is attempting to return the ball makes contact.) But it is
a foul when it is executed to block the vision of another opposing player.
Violations are also committed when an offensive player reaches under the net
and interferes with the ball or an opposing player: when there is a failure to serve
in a predetermined sequence; when a player spikes or blocks from a position not
behind the 10- foot line at the back row position: or when a player’s foot failed
to cross the midline during a play.
