Serverless needs no introduction these days. It is viewed as a magic recipe for organisations moving to cloud and for those moving beyond the container hell.
LEGO.com was migrated from a legacy monolith eCommerce platform onto serverless on AWS. This employed serverless and managed services at its core within an agile development process. Is early success with serverless a springboard to future possibilities? Does serverless really deliver what it promises?
We will look at how serverless helped in the migration and what can it do to the organisation beyond its initial adoption!

AWS User Group - Survey Results and Building APIs on AWSSebastian Krueger
APIs are the hot topic everyone talks about. Today, even CEO's appear to know what an API is. SOA is dead. Long live the API. This talk will give an overview of designing and implementing REST APIs in the context of AWS. We will cover the basics, but get pretty technical for most of the presentation. Followed by a deep dive of building a Survey API using API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB (Surprised? ;-).
Two architectural styles will be showcased.
1. Server-less design - API Gateway and Lambda
2. Server-based design - Elastic Beanstalk
Live demo will be given using API Gateway and Lambda to design a basic API from scratch in only 15 minutes.
With the introduction of Amazon Lambda, we can build JavaScript back-ends without having to worry about scaling them when there is an increase in traffic. If, like me, you have a background in functional programming, you may not have tried it yet because you love having a strong type system and a compiler to help you avoid errors. But... worry not! You can use PureScript, a Haskell-inspired language that compiles to JavaScript, to build your Amazon Lambda functions.

Riga Dev Days: Building a Smart Security Camera with Raspberry Pi Zero, Node....Mark West
A key advantage of the IoT is that it enables you to expand the potential of constrained devices by giving them access to the computational power of The Cloud.
In this session I’ll show you how I transformed a lowly Raspberry Pi Zero webcam into a smart security camera (with motion detection, threat detection and alert notifications) by combining open source software with cloud based image analysis.
Attendees can expect a short introduction on how to set up their own Raspberry Pi Zero webcam, a comparison of some of the image analysis API’s currently available, and finally a demonstration of how I used Node.js and a range of cloud based API’s (including Amazon's Rekognition, Lambda and Step Functions) to help my smart security camera distinguish between an unwanted guest and the neighbours cat.

Design and Develop Serverless Applications as Set-PiecesSheenBrisals
The emergence of microservices made us rethink how we built business applications. It led us to the migration of complex monolith applications to countless microservices. The cloud adoption and the suitability of the container services helped to revolutionize microservices.
Amidst this adoration for microservices came serverless, the next evolution of the cloud. Serverless brought deeper granularity with its technology offering. It tested our thinking, shifted our minds, and questioned us the way we’ve been building microservices. The agility of event-driven computing and the granularity of serverless allows us to break traditional microservices into multiple pieces.
In this talk, we will see how cloud and serverless help us build those pieces in isolation to achieve acceleration in our modern application development process.

AWS Mobile Week at the San Francisco Loft
Hands-On Lab: Building a Voice Enabled Modern App with GraphQL, AWS AppSync, and Amazon Alexa
Voice interaction powered by Amazon Alexa is an exciting capability to add to your web and mobile apps to drive user engagement. In this hands-on session, you will use Alexa and AWS AppSync to build a NodeJS-based voice-control system to run commands on your computer from anywhere. Actions like “compile this project”, “read a file”, and “launch an application” are a voice command away! You will also build a React app to display commands in real-time as well a history of commands that were invoked. You will create a single GraphQL endpoint hosted in AWS AppSync that supports queries, mutations, and subscriptions for both the Alexa skill as well as the React app. At the conclusion of this session, you will have built a set of apps that use GraphQL, AWS AppSync, and Alexa and you can adapt the techniques you’ve learned into your own apps.

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
