THROUGH THE INTERACTIONS IN
Online discussion forums

INTRODUCTION
PRECEDENCE OF VOCABULARY
 Goes beyond words
 Covers the words in a language that includes single items and
phrases/ chunks of several words
 It is the central constituent in the language. WHY?
i. Operates as the key to communication
ii. Serves as a groundwork for the development of other skills
iii. Acts as a gateway to learning more knowledge and exposure
 Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed, making it
justifiable to be classified as the worst breakdown in
communication.
BEST MEANS TO ACQUIRE VOCABULARY
 Through social interaction
 What important is making that input comprehensible
and clear through the production of outputs, Michael
Long (1982)
 WHAT ABOUT LEARNERS’ AFFECTIVE VARIABLES?
They meddle with the process and the outcome of the
interaction: (Self-esteem, Inhibition, Attitude, Anxiety,
Motivation)
 As of today, various platforms of online communication
have emerged making communication easier and
faster
ONLINE DISCUSSION
FORUMS
1. Accomplish the purpose of learning
2. Diminish the mentioned affective variables of the
individuals. Learners can be anonymous without
having to know with whom they are communicating
3. Offers an active process of communication where
a lot of inputs can be absorbed and acted upon at a
time

L2 Vocabulary Acquisition and Interaction
 Different studies have proven that negotiated
interaction leads to more acquired vocabulary
(Hwang, 2002; Ng Lee Luan & Sheila Marina
Sapphaty, 2011)
 How? It was mainly through the opportunities
provided for them to practice the second language
 The foundation of a successful conversation in the
context of language learning is comprised of input,
output production and feedback
E Learning & Online Discussion Forums
 Online discussion forum (ODF) is one of the most
efficient web 2.0 tools employed for
communication
 Enables users to post questions or topic and wait
for the comments or answers by other participants
 Prioritizes the users’ value at any cost
 Positive outcomes of the interactions in ODFs:
reflective thinking, high level of thinking, critical
thinking
Learner Autonomy
 They take charge of the learning process:
Forming the goals
Opting for the course content
Deciding on the strategies of learning
Monitoring the stages
Assessing the learnt materials
 Self-assessments is the tunnel to recognize
strengths and areas to improve upon during the
requirements fulfilling of the online discussions
(Kayler and Weller, 2007)
 Khodaparast (2015), the learners’ self-autonomy
and self-assurance are best developed through the
online approach
CHALLENGES
1. Insufficient moderation by the educator
2. Students’ lack of focus
3. Inadequate reflection by some students
4. Poor integration and synthesis of others’ posts
5. The inability to freely express the ideas due to the assessment
6. Constraint to the number of postings per student per question
7. Surface level discussion

CONCLUSION
 Asynchronous discussion forums can achieve high
levels of learning for the active participation, if directed
properly
 Allow learners to deliver the ideas expressively without
making face-to-face contact and provide the
opportunities for rich exchanges of information in a
variety of ways (Kim & Kamil, 2004; Lenhart, Madden,
& Hitlin, 2005)
 It is imperative to include online discussions as one of
the preferred alternatives in learning a language
(vocabulary) for the advantages it offers

Vocabulary acquisition through the interactions in Online Discussion Forums

  • 1. VOCABULARY ACQUISITION THROUGH THE INTERACTIONS IN Online discussion forums BY KHAIRUNNADIAH MOHD SAMUDDIN (P 82325)
  • 2. INTRODUCTION PRECEDENCE OF VOCABULARY  Goes beyond words  Covers the words in a language that includes single items and phrases/ chunks of several words  It is the central constituent in the language. WHY? i. Operates as the key to communication ii. Serves as a groundwork for the development of other skills iii. Acts as a gateway to learning more knowledge and exposure  Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed, making it justifiable to be classified as the worst breakdown in communication.

BEST MEANS TO ACQUIRE VOCABULARY  Through social interaction  What important is making that input comprehensible and clear through the production of outputs, Michael Long (1982)  WHAT ABOUT LEARNERS’ AFFECTIVE VARIABLES? They meddle with the process and the outcome of the interaction: (Self-esteem, Inhibition, Attitude, Anxiety, Motivation)  As of today, various platforms of online communication have emerged making communication easier and faster
  • 4. ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS 1. Accomplish the purpose of learning 2. Diminish the mentioned affective variables of the individuals. Learners can be anonymous without having to know with whom they are communicating 3. Offers an active process of communication where a lot of inputs can be absorbed and acted upon at a time
  • 5. RELATED TERMS L2 Vocabulary Acquisition and Interaction  Different studies have proven that negotiated interaction leads to more acquired vocabulary (Hwang, 2002; Ng Lee Luan & Sheila Marina Sapphaty, 2011)  How? It was mainly through the opportunities provided for them to practice the second language  The foundation of a successful conversation in the context of language learning is comprised of input, output production and feedback

E Learning & Online Discussion Forums  Online discussion forum (ODF) is one of the most efficient web 2.0 tools employed for communication  Enables users to post questions or topic and wait for the comments or answers by other participants  Prioritizes the users’ value at any cost  Positive outcomes of the interactions in ODFs: reflective thinking, high level of thinking, critical thinking
  • 7. Learner Autonomy  They take charge of the learning process: Forming the goals Opting for the course content Deciding on the strategies of learning Monitoring the stages Assessing the learnt materials  Self-assessments is the tunnel to recognize strengths and areas to improve upon during the requirements fulfilling of the online discussions (Kayler and Weller, 2007)  Khodaparast (2015), the learners’ self-autonomy and self-assurance are best developed through the online approach
  • 8. CHALLENGES 1. Insufficient moderation by the educator 2. Students’ lack of focus 3. Inadequate reflection by some students 4. Poor integration and synthesis of others’ posts 5. The inability to freely express the ideas due to the assessment 6. Constraint to the number of postings per student per question 7. Surface level discussion
  • 9. HOW TO OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES? MOTIVATION • Rose (2007), motivation is very important to ensure active contribution in the discussion • How to instill motivation? • Explore the students’ interest ROLE OF EDUCATORS • Decide on interesting topics • Determine how the students will be evaluated on their participation • To help them organize their ideas • Discover new means to express the ideas to obtain similar result as in traditional learning environment • Cognitively involved with teaching materials • Give feedbacks and moderate the discussion • Organize threaded discussion FLEXIBILITY AND OPENNESS • Free thoughts and creativities should not be restricted • Participation should not be limited

CONCLUSION  Asynchronous discussion forums can achieve high levels of learning for the active participation, if directed properly  Allow learners to deliver the ideas expressively without making face-to-face contact and provide the opportunities for rich exchanges of information in a variety of ways (Kim & Kamil, 2004; Lenhart, Madden, & Hitlin, 2005)  It is imperative to include online discussions as one of the preferred alternatives in learning a language (vocabulary) for the advantages it offers
