The present paper reports the kinetics of soybean and sunflower oils’ ethanolysis. The transesterification reaction was carried out using a molar ratio of ethanol to oil of 9:1 and 1.0 wt% of sodium ethoxide as catalyst under stirring of 400 rpm. The reactions were performed in a stirred batch reactor at three different temperatures (308.15, 323.15 and 338.15 K) over a period of 120 min. The concentration of compounds was analyzed by High-Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC). The kinetic model assumed that ethanolysis occurs in a sequence of three reversible steps with the production of di- and monoacylglycerols as intermediate components. Based on the modeling approach it was possible to determine the rate constants of reaction and activation energies for the transesterification process of soybean and sunflower oils. Despite the phase splitting, no mass transfer control was observed and the proposed mathematical model fitted well the experimental data.Separation techniques in oils & fats science

This document presents a study on using Portland pozzolana cement as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production from soybean oil and thumba oil via transesterification. Characterization of the raw materials and catalyst is described. Experiments are conducted to optimize reaction conditions such as methanol-to-oil ratio, catalyst amount, temperature and time. Results show the catalyst achieves up to 94.52% yield for soybean oil biodiesel and 90% for thumba oil biodiesel under optimal conditions. The present paper reports the kinetics of soybean and sunflower oils’ ethanolysis. The transesterification reaction was carried out using a molar ratio of ethanol to oil of 9:1 and 1.0 wt% of sodium ethoxide as catalyst under stirring of 400 rpm. The reactions were performed in a stirred batch reactor at three different temperatures (308.15, 323.15 and 338.15 K) over a period of 120 min. The concentration of compounds was analyzed by High-Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC). The kinetic model assumed that ethanolysis occurs in a sequence of three reversible steps with the production of di- and monoacylglycerols as intermediate components. Based on the modeling approach it was possible to determine the rate constants of reaction and activation energies for the transesterification process of soybean and sunflower oils. Despite the phase splitting, no mass transfer control was observed and the proposed mathematical model fitted well the experimental data.Separation techniques in oils & fats science

Penicillin G acylase from Achromobacter sp. (NPGA) was overproduced by culture of the recombinant E.coli in a stirred bioreactor. Enzyme amount assayed by titration of enzyme catalytic site with inhibitor PMSF corresponded to 0.9 g of NPGA per L of fermentation broth ( 20% of the cell soluble protein). The enzyme was purified, characterized and evaluated in kinetically controlled syntheses of antibiotics ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin and cefadroxil in soluble or immobilized form (Fermase NA®-150). Catalyst synthetic activity calculated from initial rate of product synthesis at 160mM concentration of nucleophile for ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin were 2.14, 4.14 and 3.86 kg per kg catalyst (dry weight) per hour, respectively. A high operational stability, a half-life of more than 2000 cycles, of the immobilized NPGA was determined for amoxicillin synthesis (230 mM 6-APA, 340 mM HPGMe, 27.5°C, pH 6.25).
