OVERVIEW
• Introduction
• Why VR?
• Types of VR System
• VR Design Components
• Important Factors in VR Systems
• VR Devices
• Future of VR
1
INTRODUCTION
• It is an artificial environment created with computer hardware and software and
presented to the user in such a way that it appears and feels like a real environment.
• In 1991, first commercial entertainment VR system “Virtuality” was released.
2
WHY VR?
• VR is able to immerse you in a computer generated world of your own making:
o a room
o a city
o the interior of human body
• With VR, you can explore any uncharted territory of the human imagination.
3
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Window on World (WoW)
• Immersive VR
• Tele-presence
• Mixed Reality(Augmented Reality)
• Distributed VR
4
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Window on World (WoW)
o Also called Desktop VR.
o Using a conventional computer monitor to display the 3D virtual world.
5
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Immersive VR
o Completely immerse the user's personal viewpoint inside the virtual 3D world.
o The user has no visual contact with the physical word.
o Often equipped with a Head Mounted Display (HMD).
6
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Tele-presence
o A variation of visualizing complete computer generated worlds.
o Links remote sensors in the real world with the senses of a human operator. The remote sensors might be
located on a robot. Useful for performing operations in dangerous environments.
7
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Mixed Reality (Augmented Reality)
o The seamless merging of real space and virtual space.
o Integrate the computer-generated virtual objects into the physical world which become in a sense an
equal part of our natural environment.
8
TYPES OF VR SYSTEM
• Distributed VR
• A simulated world runs on several computers which are connected over network and the people are able
to interact in real time, sharing the same virtual world.
9
VR DESIGN COMPONENTS
VR comprises of six main components:
• Virtual World (Database of scenes)
• Graphic engine (Define viewport)
• Simulation engine (control change w.r.t users)
• User interface
• User Inputs
• User Outputs
10
• Visual Realism “fool the user’s senses”
• Image Resolution “environment based”
• Frame Rate “continuous &smooth picture”
• Latency “degree of realism”
IMPORTANT FACTORS IN VR SYSTEMS
11
Some well-known VR-devices are:
• Cyber Touch Gloves
• Head Mounted Display
• Boom
• Cave
• Data Suit
• Omni directional Treadmills
• Cyber Carpet
• Virtual Globe
• Virtual Keyboard
VR DEVICES
12
• Flight Simulation
• Car Drive Learning
APPLICATIONS OF VR
13
• Architecture
• Hang-glider experience
APPLICATIONS OF VR
14
• Medicine
• Education
APPLICATIONS OF VR
15
• Entertainment and so on….
APPLICATIONS OF VR
16
• It is difficult to predict the future of virtual reality with confidence. It is still very much in
the development stage with many users creating their own customized applications and
setups to suit their needs.
FUTURE OF VR
