TIPS FOR BLADE SUCCESS
TECHNIQUE
- Allow the Blade to do the work
- Most blade problems occur from
forcing the blade into the cut
BLADES DON’T CUT – THEY GRIND

DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
6 COMMON BLADE FAILURES
1. SEGMENT LOSS
2. CRACKED SEGMENTS
3. OVERHEATING
4. CRACKED CORE
5. BREAKOUT
6. UNDERCUTTING

DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
SEGMENT LOSS
Cause:
The material you’re cutting slips during
the cutting which twists or jams the segment loose.
Remedy:
Make sure the material is secure before
you make your cut.
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
CRACKED SEGMENTS
Cause:
The blade segment bond is too hard for
the material.
Remedy:
Use the correct blade with a softer bond.
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
OVERHEATING
Cause:
Adequate coolant was not provided.
Remedy:
Check water supply for volume, pressure or clogs.
Use dry blades ONLY for step cutting.
Reminder to let blade cool every 10-15 seconds.
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
CRACKED CORE
Cause:
Excessive cutting pressure, jamming or
twisting the blade in the cut causes the blade’s
core to bend. May lead to cracked gullets.
Remedy:
The saw operator should use steady, even infeed pressure and
be careful not to twist or jam the blade into the cut
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
BREAKOUT
Cause:
Two fatigue cracks meet from continued
use of blade with a cracked core
Remedy:
Always inspect your blade, especially the gullets before use.
Never use a blade with a cracked core
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION
UNDERCUTTING
Cause:
Highly abrasive material (usually sand)
grinds against the blade in the cut causing the
steel center to wear faster than the diamond segment
Remedy:
Keep the saw blade out of the substrate (sand/class 5)
Use of undercut protectors positioned around the steel center
to change the pattern of constant abrasion
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION
FRAYING
Cause:
When the blade is dropped, run over,
twisted in the cut or if the blade gets wet.
Remedy:
Discard if frayed, cracked or gets wet
ALWAYS USE 3-PLY ABRASIVES
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION
METAL RING MISSING
Cause:
Wrong arbor and forcing the blade
onto the arbor.
Remedy:
Make sure the blade has the correct arbor
and is carefully mounted on saw
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS ENSURE THE METAL RING IS INTACT AND NOT DAMAGED
Proprietary information, not for distribution
© 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc.
ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION
INCORRECT RPM
Cause:
Wrong abrasive blade for your saw.
Remedy:
Make sure your abrasive blade is 1/8” wide and
rated for 5400 RPM
Always use abrasives 1/8” wide and rated for 5400 RPM. Chop saw abrasives are 3/32” wide & not rated for 5400 RPM

BLADE INSPECTION: INJURY
Employee's Foot Is Lacerated When Struck By Saw Blade
At 9:30 a.m. on December 5, 2017, Employee #1 was cutting concrete
with a Stihl TS700 saw. The blade broke, sending three pieces airborne.
A piece of blade struck the right foot of Employee #1, causing
lacerations.

KICKBACK: HOW TO AVOID
TIPS TO HELP AVOID KICKBACK
Make sure the material is properly
supported before cutting.
Contact at the front of the wheel can
cause kickback and should be avoided.
Take precaution when cutting within
the danger zone (upper quadrant)
Use wedges to avoid
pinching and kickback

  • 14. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION SEGMENT LOSS Cause: The material you’re cutting slips during the cutting which twists or jams the segment loose. Remedy: Make sure the material is secure before you make your cut. Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 15. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION CRACKED SEGMENTS Cause: The blade segment bond is too hard for the material. Remedy: Use the correct blade with a softer bond. Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 16. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION OVERHEATING Cause: Adequate coolant was not provided. Remedy: Check water supply for volume, pressure or clogs. Use dry blades ONLY for step cutting. Reminder to let blade cool every 10-15 seconds. Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 17. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION CRACKED CORE Cause: Excessive cutting pressure, jamming or twisting the blade in the cut causes the blade’s core to bend. May lead to cracked gullets. Remedy: The saw operator should use steady, even infeed pressure and be careful not to twist or jam the blade into the cut Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 18. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION BREAKOUT Cause: Two fatigue cracks meet from continued use of blade with a cracked core Remedy: Always inspect your blade, especially the gullets before use. Never use a blade with a cracked core Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 19. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. DIAMOND BLADE INSPECTION UNDERCUTTING Cause: Highly abrasive material (usually sand) grinds against the blade in the cut causing the steel center to wear faster than the diamond segment Remedy: Keep the saw blade out of the substrate (sand/class 5) Use of undercut protectors positioned around the steel center to change the pattern of constant abrasion Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 20. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION FRAYING Cause: When the blade is dropped, run over, twisted in the cut or if the blade gets wet. Remedy: Discard if frayed, cracked or gets wet ALWAYS USE 3-PLY ABRASIVES Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 21. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION METAL RING MISSING Cause: Wrong arbor and forcing the blade onto the arbor. Remedy: Make sure the blade has the correct arbor and is carefully mounted on saw IMPORTANT: ALWAYS ENSURE THE METAL RING IS INTACT AND NOT DAMAGED Proprietary information, not for distribution
  • 22. © 2024 – Esch Construction Supply, Inc. ABRASIVE BLADE INSPECTION INCORRECT RPM Cause: Wrong abrasive blade for your saw. Remedy: Make sure your abrasive blade is 1/8” wide and rated for 5400 RPM Always use abrasives 1/8” wide and rated for 5400 RPM. Chop saw abrasives are 3/32” wide & not rated for 5400 RPM Proprietary information, not for distribution
