The Vietnam War took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s between the United States and Vietnam, costing over 600,000 Vietnamese lives and 58,000 U.S. troops. There were widespread protests in the U.S. against the war as it caused major problems at home and led to the U.S. eventually leaving Vietnam. A major conflict during the war was the U.S. fear of communist domination spreading across Southeast Asia as well as tensions between the U.S. and USSR during the Cold War. The Vietnamese land was left destroyed after the conclusion of the long and costly war.
