Poster by James Bugeza, Clovice Kankya, Denis Mugizi, Velma Kivali, Lordrick Alinaitwe, Ignacio Moriyon and Elizabeth Cook presented at the Boosting Uganda's Investment in Livestock Development (BUILD) project annual planning meeting, Kampala, Uganda, 20–22 September 2022.
Astroviruses are small, star-shaped RNA viruses that infect the intestinal tract of young birds. They are a common cause of runting-stunting syndrome in broilers and enteritis in guinea fowl. Six different types of avian astroviruses have been identified that infect chickens, turkeys, and ducks. Astroviruses are transmitted orally and cause mild intestinal signs but can also lead to more severe disease if other pathogens are present. Diagnosis is made through electron microscopy, ELISA, or PCR techniques. There is no vaccine or treatment available, so control relies on good hygiene and management practices.

ABSTRACT- The aim of the study was to determine the values of selected haematological indices in Gallus gallus
domesticus, which is naturally infected with cesode parasites. In spite of the fact that the haematological value of birds
(Gallus gallus domesticus) are of clinical significant rate than commercial importance. The total erythrocytes and
leukocyte count, haemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume were determined. There is a decrease in RBC count i.e
(Normal host- 3.98 x 106/μl to infected host-2.96 x 106/μl) and Hb concentration (Normal host- 10.1g/dl to infected
host-8.5g/dl). While the total WBC count was increase up to (Normal host- 86.9 x 103/μl to infected host-98.2 x 103/μl)
while PCV, MCH, MCV is a decrease in the infected as compare to the normal Gallus gallus domesticus. The study
deepens and organizes the knowledge within the possibilities of using and interpreting levels of haematological indicators
for monitoring health.

BIOLOGICAL VARIANCE OF SAT2 FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE VIRUSES. EuFMD
- The study investigated the genetic variability, infectivity, virulence, and stability of four SAT2 foot-and-mouth disease viruses. It found that the viruses had a wide range in stability at low pH and high temperatures. They also caused varying degrees of clinical signs in cattle from mild to severe, but this did not correlate with virulence in cell culture.
- One virus, ZIM/7/83, was more virulent in cell culture but did not necessarily cause more severe disease in cattle. The variance in pathogenesis among the SAT2 viruses was not explained by differences in cell lysis, viral fitness during co-infection, or capsid stability.
- The results emphasize that not all SAT2
The document provides new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). It discusses the definitions, epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and initial antibiotic therapy for HAP and VAP. For diagnosis, it recommends either a clinical approach using criteria like the Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) or a quantitative culture approach using techniques like bronchoscopy. For initial therapy, it stratifies patients into different risk groups and provides treatment recommendations based on the severity of illness and risk of multi-drug resistant pathogens.
AHPND, also known as Early Mortality Syndrome, is a new bacterial disease affecting shrimp farms. It is caused by a strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria. The disease causes the shrimp's hepatopancreas to deteriorate and become infected, leading to mortality within 10-30 days. It has spread to several Asian countries since 2010. While the bacteria can survive for weeks in refrigerated or aquatic environments, freezing or high heat kills it. Farms can prevent transmission by disinfecting and avoiding use of live feeds from infected areas.
This document discusses occupational exposure to bloodborne viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV among healthcare workers.
