GUIDELINES FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT (SIP)
AND
SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT (SIR)
IMPORTANCE OF SIP AND CAPSTONE PROJECT
For students who do not have work experience the SIP and the capstone project is the focal point
based on which questions will be raised by prospective interviewer.
For students who have work experience a SIP adds a management perspective to his technical
knowledge. Also an empirical way of solving problem is learned by the student and also adds to
his arsenal of technical skill.
The SIP is an amalgamation of theoretical and practical learning. It is an opportunity to the
students to have an orientation of how a business entity works. Apart from the technical skills the
SIP develops the soft skills, people skills, analytical thinking to solve the problems faced by the
companies. The development of these skills are important to acquire jobs and thereafter sustain
in the job.
BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF SIP
A B School student has to have an investigators mindset. Investigation for a business school
student is to a find the cause of a problem. The first step is to find the problems, select one
problem, and then find out the various probable reasons which can cause the problem and then
empirically prove or disapprove the various postulated probable reasons.
Intuitively and by experience we know many of the causes of the problem and their solutions.
An exploration has to be done by the student by doing a reading of literature on similar problems
in the past. The purpose of the literature review is to find out some new and unique dimensions
qualitatively and quantitatively which we have missed and which could be very relevant in the
current investigation.
An understanding of research methodology is essential. Exploration by observation and interview
using open ended questionnaire will be required to have a grip over the various dimensions.
Survey type research generally will be required for approving or disapproving the postulated
dimensions in SIP
Disclaimer: The above mentioned design is not sacrosanct. The student has to consult the
allocated guide and then proceed with the actual work.
The duration of the SIP is 60 days.
MAINTAINING AND REPORTING THE PROGRESS OF SIP
It is compulsory for you to send the progress report of your SIP weekly on a designated email id
provided by the institute. Please note at the time of evaluation this will be referred.
REPORT WRITING
The report (based on training and the problem/project studied) prepared by the student will be
known as Summer Training Report. It should reflect in depth study of micro problem, ordinarily
assigned by the organization where student undergoes training.
One comprehensive chapter must be included about the industry in which the company is
operating. This will include the mapping of the competitor, customer, supplier, threats to the
industry, government regulation. Also one comprehensive chapter must be included about the
organization where the student has undergone training. This must include genesis in brief of the
company, the standing of the company vis a vis the competitors, the financial strength of the
company, the intellectual and the management band width of the company, the brand equity of
the companies product, the competitive strength of the company.. These chapters will form part I
of the Report. Part One should not exceed 15 pages. Part II of the Report will contain the study
of micro research problem. The average size of final report ordinarily will be within 60 to 70
pages all inclusive. Please do not explain theoretical concepts to puff up the report
EVALUATION OF THE SIP
