Vein mapping is done to identify the anatomy and physiology of venous system problems and plan EVLA procedures. The mapping process involves using ultrasound to examine the deep and superficial venous systems. For the deep system, the common femoral vein, femoral vein, popliteal vein, and calf veins are checked for compression, flow, and clots. For the superficial system, the greater and small saphenous veins are slowly surveyed while marking the veins and tributaries on the anatomical map. Hemodynamic studies are then done to identify reflux areas, which are marked on the map. The maps provide documentation for insurance reimbursement.
