The Kitengesa Community Library serves both children and adults in the community. In July 2018, they held a week-long health camp for village women to teach them about cancer prevention and signs. The camp was a success, with participants not only learning about their health but also improving their literacy skills. The library also supports secondary students by paying their school fees in exchange for work at the library, and helps some further their education through university. They are working on additional programs and ways to generate income to continue their important community services.
It was a big shock to me when I graduated from Bordeaux Primary School to King Edward VII High School. It wasn’t only the fact that I went to boarding school at 13. Or that it was an all-boys school. Or that there were more than a 1000 sons competing for an education.
It was that the standards were so high. In primary school I was a big deal (or so I thought). First team cricket. First team soccer (half colours for soccer). Top three in athletics. Intellectually functional with a B+ average. Popular with the teachers and mildly popular with the opposite sex.
But I was working off a low base. I was a big fish in a small pond. I doubt there were more than 300 children at the school. Maybe there were 150 boys, all told.
At King Edward VII I became a small fish in a big pond. All I could get into was the D or E team in rugby. I didn’t get the nod for the cricket team. I was offered the position of scorer. I just couldn’t see myself as counting runs when I wanted to make runs. So, I declined. I was an embarrassment in the athletics department. My academic achievements weren’t exemplary. I did, however, crack the nod to join the chess team … as a reserve.
Luckily for me I had a wise mother. She said that she’d love me no matter what. All she expected from me was to try my best. And, that I’d never disappoint her. I failed miserably on the disappointment score. But that’s another story.
So, even though I never aced it at school, my self esteem was still intact. I tried my best and that was good enough for me. Not for one second did I feel that I wasn’t good enough.
You see, my mother never implied that she’d love me more if I got good marks at school. It didn’t matter to her whether I made the First team or not. She thought I was smart, with or without academic colours. She said, “I will love you, no matter what.”
That made all the difference.
For her, I was enough.
And, today I know that’s true. I’m enough.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.Christina Parmionova
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
2. What we do...
VDCA is a grassroots organization, which has had official registration as an NGO
in Cambodia since 2007. We offer underprivileged children the chance for a better
future by providing them a free education in Khmer, English, Cambodian morality,
hygiene, computer courses and art studies. There are now more than 600 children
who attend our VDCA schools in Siem Reap and Anlung Pi, Cambodia. We also
provide opportunities for families to have a better life through education, training
and community programs.
VDCA is entirely funded through our generous sponsors, donors
and fundraisers from around the world.
3. Our Library Project
In celebration of International Children’s Book Day, we would love to
upgrade our library. Our staff and volunteers have been working hard to
give our library a fresh feel with new paint and we would like to provide
our children with new books, as ours are very pre-loved.
We would like to raise US$1000 to improve the library with new Fiction
and Non-Fiction books for our children and library supplies.
4. Our Playground Project
VDCA is now offering morning classes to provide free education to even
more children in Siem Reap. We think it is also important to offer our
children a space for play in between classes, so the children can enjoy
being children, despite any hardships at home.
We would like to raise US$700 to purchase playground equipment and
install a fun, safe play area for our children.
5. How you can help us...
You can help us create a better school for our children, by fundraising or donating to these projects.
We truly appreciate donations of any amount, which will help these dreams become a reality.
You can donate through one of our Partner Organisations in your country which may be tax
deductible. Please note that you would like your donation used for our Library and Playground
Fundraiser.
