We explore variations in the way authors cite previous work across the scientific landscape. Based on an analysis of 56 million citing sentences from the full text of Elsevier publications. Features of interest are adherence to author-year style, direct mentioning of cited author's last name, and (groups of) verbs occurring in the citing sentence. Visualisation of these features across the scientific landscape are made with VOSviewer.

English dictionaries since 1755 have attempted to present succinct statements of the meaning(s) of each word. A word may have more than one meaning but, so the theory goes, each meaning can in principle be summarized in a neat paraphrase that is substitutable (in context) for the target word (the definiendum). Such paraphrases must be so worded that the the substitution can be made without changing the truth of what is said – salva veritate, in Leibniz’s famous phrase. Building on Leibniz, philosophers of language such as Anna Wierzbicka have argued that the duty of the lexicographer is to “seek the invariant”.
In this presentation, I argue that this view of word meaning and definition may be all very well as a principle for developing stipulative definitions of terminology in scientific discourse, but it has led to serious misunderstandings about the nature of meaning in natural language, creating insuperable obstacles for the understanding of how word meaning works. As a result, linguists from Bloomfield to Chomsky and philosophers of language from Leibniz to Russell – great thinkers all – have been unable to say anything true or useful about meaning in language.
I argue that, instead, lexicographers should aim to discover patterns of word use in large corpora, and associate meanings with patterns instead of (or as well as) words in isolation.
They should also distinguish normal uses of each word from exploitations of norms.

Developing and monitoring communities has become increasingly easy on the web as the number of interactive facilities and amount of data available about communities increases. It is possible to view connections and patterns on social and professional networks in the form of mathematical graphs. It is also possible to visualise connections between authors of academic papers. For example, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic Search, and Academia.edu, etc., now have large corpuses of freely available information on publications, together with author and citation details, that can be accessed and presented in a number of ways. In mathematical circles, the concept of the Erdős number has been introduced in honour of the Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős, measuring the "collaborative distance" of a person away from Erdős through links by co-author. Similar metrics have been proposed in other fields. The possibility of exploring and improving the presentation of such links online in computer science and other fields will be presented as a means of improving the outreach and impact of academic publications. Some practical guidance on what is worthwhile in presenting publication information online will be given.

In mathematical circles, the concept of the Erdős number has been introduced in honour of the Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős, measuring the "collaborative distance" of a person away from Erdős through links by co-author. Similar metrics have been proposed in other fields. The possibility of exploring and improving the presentation of such links online in computer science and other fields will be presented as a means of improving the outreach and impact of academic publications. Some practical guidance on what is worthwhile in presenting publication information online will be given.
