Burial In Sophocles Antigone
In Sophocles play Antigone, two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices fight for the thrown of Thebes.
The war comes to an end when both brothers die fighting for the honor, and their uncle Creon
becomes the king of Thebes. Upon his coronation, Creon issues a decree that Eteocles, the former
king of Thebes, will be honored with a traditional military burial, while his brother Polynices will
be left unwept, unburied, a lovely treasure for birds that scan the field and feast to their heart s
content (Sophocles, 60). Antigone, one of the two sisters, outraged by this ruling, takes matters
into her own hands and goes against this newly established law by properly burying her brother.
Ultimately Antigone sets aside the political law and does what s morally right by honoring her
brother with a traditional burial. I will argue that Antigone s decision to bury her brother was the
right decision. While she may have disobeyed the law put in place by the newly appointed
inexperienced king of Thebes, she was in turn honoring her brother and the long standing traditions
and expectations of the g ds, principles much more important than the arbitrary laws of the state.
I would argue that most importantly, Creon s law was arbitrary. Creon says in a discussion he has
with Haemon, Am I to rule this land for others or myself? after a short dialogue back and forth
where Haemon argues that a city is not owned by one man alone, Creon declares that The city is
the king s that s the law

Honor in Much Ado About Nothing Essay
Throughout the history of the world, honor has been an important part of life. In literature, as well,
honor plays an important role in many plots and the development of almost any character.
Shakespeare s play Much Ado About Nothing is no exception. In this comedy about love and
marriage, honor is revealed as the primary reason for many of the actions taken by several different
characters. When Claudiobreaksoff his wedding with Hero, he does it because he believes she is not
chastised as she claims to be and in being such, she would dishonor him as well as her father if
the marriage were to proceed as planned. The play is an accurate depiction of the honor codeand the
different standards for men and women of the time in regards to... Show more content on

Her honor is disgraced for her actions and Claudio will no longer accept her as his wife because of
the dishonor she has caused him.
Shakespeare uses both Claudio and Leonato to represent the males of the time and the honor
code they were held to. Claudio is in no way held to the same pre marital expectations as Hero,
which, at the time, was the case for all men. For instance, when Hero is accused of being with a
man prior to her marriage, no one questions what man and, quite frankly, no one cares what man.
Shakespeare also shows how men are judged and given honor based on how their women act.
When Leonato learns of the accusations his daughter receives on her wedding day he scolds her
and says,
Wherefore? Why doth not every living thing
Cry shame upon he? Could she here deny
The story that is printed in her blood?
Do not live, Hero; do not open thine eyes...
Why had I not with charitable hand
Took up a beggar s issue at my gates,
Who smirched thus and mired with infamy,
I might have said, no part of it is mine;
This shame derives itself from unknown lions ? (IV, i)
This quote shows how a father at that time would wish to have no part of his daughter for
committing such acts because he knows of the dishonorable reputation he will receive as a result.
In the time of Shakespeare, men and women were held to different standards and honored and
dishonored for different reasons. Chastity is one of those reasons. For a

Legal Issues Over The Legal System
The career that I chose to focus on was legal area as far as becoming an attorney that practices
family and criminal court. I chose this area of study because I have become interested in legal
issues over the past few years that lead me to the decision to practice law. Upon deciding what I
wanted to do with my career, I then decided that I want to first start out as a lawyer and then
progress to becoming a judge where I plan on retiring from. I decided I would rather practice
criminal law and family law as a prosecutor rather than becoming a defense attorney. I don t feel
that my arguments are strong enough to be a defense attorney and do plan on working on those
skills for improvement. However I am a firm believe that justice served is the main reason
individuals lean to the legal system for help. During my research for my chosen career I found an
article that allowed me to look deeper into the legal system. The article focuses on the importance
of the local common law in resolving various related disputes (Decker, 2014). Topics discussed
include relationship between the local common law with the customs, social norms and local legal
culture, role of the local courts of the U.S. in the construction, implementation and enforcement of
the common law and relationship between the common law and access to justice (Decker, 2014). It
further discusses the importance of the legal scholarship in construction of the common law
(Decker, 2014). After reading this article it basically

Heroism In Oh, Not With Statues By Robert Hayden
Hard times don t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the hero within us is revealed. Bob
Riley. Each person goes through challenging times, even heroes experience the challenging times
that show what they are truly made up of. These difficult times show the level of a determined
mentality they have about their hopes and dreams. Heroes never give up when a struggle may
knock them down by cause of them adopting that as strength to fight what they believe in and get
right back up. Since heroism represents a fight in taking action for what they believe in, it doesn t
affect the heroif it is themselves against the world, they never give up. Although it is the world

When the score is 46 32 during the last quarter of the championship basketball game, the losing
team should never give up with six more minutes. The leader doesn t just tell the team that there
is no time to get back up and win this game because they have no faith in the recovery. Instead,
the leader spreads the motivation through the whole team to feel determined to win that trophy.
Nothing is ever impossible for hopes and dream that a hero has to strive for. Even when a
difficult time comes to make hard decisions, they use the motivation when everyone is not on the
same team as them. They don t need all those negative minds in their life, but when they do, they
never let them affect their motivation and strong belief. Not every person like heroes need back

Ernest Hemingway s The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber
Final Paper
Ernest Hemingway, the famously known author out of Oak Parks, Illinois on July 21, 1899 to
Grace and Clarence Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway was brought up in a very conservative but yet
unusual house. The reason I iterate unusual is because his mother, Grace Hemingway is the one
that provides the financial stability in their household and does not do any house chores, she was an
strong willed women but was unsupportive and bashful, whereas his father Clarence Hemingway
played more of the mother role because he would do the house chores and did not make as much as
Grace, That is unusual at that time frame in history because men were the breadwinners of the
households and the women would do all the house chores. The things that I believe that most
influenced Ernest Hemingway psychologically through his life would have to be the role his
mother had on him and also the influence women besides his mother, and it could be seen with the
characters Margot Macomber and Francis Macomber from Ernest Hemingway s story , The Short
Happy Life of Francis Macomber .
Margot Macomber, has strong similarities to that of Ernest Hemingway s mother, Grace
Hemingway. They are both strong willed women who do not need a male companionship but are in
their relationship for their benefit. For Margot Macomber, it was the financial lifestyle that her
husband Francis brought to her life which was why she never thought of leaving him, and for
Grace Hemingway she was with her husband because

Designing A Project Using Java Programming
worked on and grasped knowledge on different java platforms while I work at Damian
Consulting Inc. Java programming, one of the best programming platforms for getting the right
output with a little ease. The understanding of how to develop a project using java programming
is made clear. In the first few weeks of my job I had to learn and brush up all about the basic
features of java programming so that when I had to apply on the coding I had no chance to
confuse. The basic features of java are dependent on the OOPs concept. The features of java that
made it unique, platform independent and highly desirable are:
Simple
Portable
Object oriented
Multithreaded
Architectural neutral
High performance
Distributed
Dynamic
Secure
Robust
The basic concepts that are to be learned are:
Objects:
The objects give us the basic understanding of the java programming. These are the elemental
particles for developing a state or a behavior for a particular value. The objects are the collections
that are the blueprint particles for the class. The super class in java is Object Class.
Class:
The class is the collection of objects. The class gives us the blueprint for the object behaviors and
the states, the class determines the complete functionality of the object / value features.
The class is the combination of methods and their functionalities. They contain the variable

A Brief Analysis Of Tangerine
Imagine standing under bleachers of a high school football field. There is a group of kids
standing and talking to each other, and one of those people standing in the crowd is your
brother. Right from the corner of your eye you see someone else, your brothers age, that looks
furious and looks ready to punch someone. The guy is walking to your brother, but the next thing
you know is a harmful weapon ready to strike(Bloor 210 211). In the book of Tangerine there are
many decisions that Paul, the main character, has to make, but the people that affect him also have
to make choices. Erik Fisher, Paul s older brother, makes many choices that affect Paul. Erik s
decisions affects Paul by making him have less confidence, causes his friends to avoid him, and

When Erik makes fun of Mike and Joey, Paul had no confidence to stand up for his friend(Bloor

was just riding his bike, until a black car was coming at him, and the person driving the car had
baseball bat which hit Paul. Paul can all the way home, leaving his bike there. When he got home,

Hope In The Film Silver Linings Playbook
Silver lining: a sign of hope in an unfortunate or gloomy situation; a bright prospect ( Silver lining
). It is an inevitable part of the human life to undergo a challenging circumstance; the way people
handle them varies. There are people who are pessimistic and tend to limit their focus only on the
negative aspects and have little or no hope in an outcome, then there are people who are optimistic
and make light of the situation and remain positive and hopeful that they can overcome the obstacle
without letting it bring them down. The 2012 filmSilver Linings Playbook , based off the award
winning novel written by Matthew Quick, captures the influence of one s silver lining and the
challenges of overcoming hardship. Based on the complexity and actions of the characters, the
angles the camera captured, and the importance of symbolism, the movie, Silver Linings Playbook

Porsche And Volkswagen Group Case Study
Unit 4 Team Exercise
The invention of automobiles had been dated long back in history. From that day till now, it had not
only made our lives easier but also simpler. From times back then till now many big automobile
companies had came into existence, some of them were successful and some were not, thus going
out of market and competition. Among them, Porsche and Volkswagen Group(VW) have emerged
as one of the world leaders in automobile industry. Through years of hardwork and sheer use of
technology and engineering developments, both of these companies have carved a name for
themselves in their respective markets. But sometimes, bad management and several areas of
conflict arise between two companies that can lead to its downfall. In this case too the CEO of
Porsche, just wanted to administer each and everything according to his own ways and rules, but on
the other hand the CEO of Volkswagen, even after facing huge loses wanted to continue on with
his strategy because he was quite confident about his strategy and clearly had a broader outlook of
the scenario. Therefore, due to having different mindsets, there was a conflict between the ideas of
two which led to the decline of one of them. These conflicts can be summed up in the following
couple of questions:
1.Identify and discuss the sources of conflict between Porsche and Volkswagen executives.
Well, throughout this case there was a sense of internal war between the executives of two of the
world s largest automobile companies. Wiedeking, the CEO of Porsche, can be seen as a
dominating personality throughout this case. Wiedeking was famous for his efficient production
and astute marketing, which turned Porsche into world s most profitable car company. Therefore,
keeping this same attitude in mind, he wanted to make some major changes in the Volkswagen
group(VW) because he was aiming to achieve something big. He wanted to remove inefficient
operations and also insisted on shutting down the production lines of some cars like Phaeton and
Buggati , which according to him were not highly profitable and were a commercial failure. On the
other hand, Ferdinand Piech, the CEO of Volkswagen group, had something else in his mind.
Unlike Wiedeking, who only focused

Positive Impacts Of Student Engagement And High Impact...
Student Engagement and High Impact Practices Student Engagement and High Impact practices
are utilized on a majority of campus across the globe. These practices implement success incentives
to encourage growth among students and their academic and career development. Student
engagement requires individual effort and involvement which, are critical elements that impact the
college experience (Pascarella Terenzini, 2005). Implementing high impact practices promotes the
different engagement strategies that increase the overall success of the student. George Kuh has
presented ten high impact practices that have been proven to be beneficial to students and their
cumulative learning. These ten practices include First year seminars and experiences, common
intellectual experiences, learning communities, writing intensive courses, collaborative assignments
and projects, undergraduate research, diversity/global learning, service learning, community based
learning, internships, and capstone courses and projects (Kuh, 2008). These practice along with
engaging strategies are essential to learning outcomes for students. The practices can be applied to
students lives and promote intellectual growth and engagement. Implementing engaging activities
throughout a student s college career helps prepare students to collaborate research with field
experience, make meaningful connections, and increase the likelihood of learning, success, and
retention. Over the last five years, I have worked

Children As Enemies By Ha Jin
A breakaway from tradition also includes a breakaway from family in the case for author Ha Jin s
short story, Children as Enemies. The story focuses on immigrant Chinese grandparents from the Xi
family who came to America to be with their son and his children, only to be driven away by their
grandchildren s hostility towards everything Chinese that started with their dislike for their
traditional names. The children are trying to Americanize themselves as much as they can while the
grandparents are trying to keep everything as traditional as they can whereas the son of the
grandparents tries to act as a neutral barrier of sorts that ultimately fails when the grandparents
move out. The short story takes on the numerous themes but mainly the clash of cultures and how
one s heritage can potentially dwindle from one generation to the next. Qigan and Hua Xi are the
grandchildren of the focalizer, who are unhappy with their first and familyname as well with just
about everything else that resembled their family culture, save for some food they enjoy. It is
noted how important a character, as well as all people s names are, as noted by characterization.
The protagonist notes this fact, having sought all the names of his family from the prosperity of a
fortune teller. The children and their parents pay no mind to this, abiding the children s wish for a
new name. Slowly but surely, a break from tradition is forming. Something especially important
however, is their attendance to

The Dead Gabriel Conroy Essay
Although reassured about his life status and his future, Gabriel Conroy foresees that his own

Prostitution Is Legal For Human Trafficking

disgusts me, are the thoughts I was having when I saw that Thailand has a total of around three

out of the United States. But, now in the United States 1 out of 50 states have prostitution legal.
Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal. But it is still going on in other states in the
United States. Prostitution was taken place, usually when a female needs money to support
herself or maybe even her family. But, now parents are starting their kids to be prostitutes at the
age of THIRTEEN! In Thailand, there are around three million people there are sex workers and
around one third are MINORS. Luckily, it is way harder to have minors in the United States then it
would be to have minors out of the country. Being a minor means that you are under the age of 18.
This is called prostitution of children or child prostitution meaning prostitution involving a child. It
is a form of commercial sexual exploitation of children. The term normally refers to prostitution of

Scientific Revolution
Kuhn used the Chemical Revolution as one of his primary examples of a scientific revolution and
based on what was read and discussed in class, I agree with Kuhn s analysis. Historical examples
of Kuhn s account of the chemical revolution in the Structure of Scientific Revolution are
exemplified in the Phlogiston theory, its period as a paradigm, point of normal science, and
eventually the theory s abandonment for Lavoisier s discovery of oxygen as a point of Scientific
Revolution.
In Kuhn s Structure of Scientific Revolution, he presents that science is a cycle that has a
paradigm, which begins with a period of normal science, a crisis, revolution, then a paradigm
change.
In regards to Kuhn s SSR, the phlogiston theory can be defined as ... Show more content on

Lavoisier disavowed the phlogiston theory and paradigm through his memoir, insisting that the
phlogiston theory was unclear. Lavoisier describes the situation as he states in his Memoirs that
the majority of metallic calces are not to be reduced, that is, returned to the metallic state, without
the immediate contact of a carbonaceous material or any substance whatsoever containing what
we call phlogiston and therefore the fact that this fluid is obtained as fied air gives us no right to
conclude that it existed in this form in the metallic calx before its combination with the carbon
(Lavoisier 164). Lavoisier declared that in attacking here Stahl s doctrine my object is not to
substitute a rigorously demonstrated theory but solely a hypothesis which appears to me more
probable, more comfortable to the laws of nature, and which appears to me to contain fewer forced
explanations and fewer contradictions (Lavoisier 173). He is declaring that his discovery of oxygen
is more legitimate than Stahl s (also the phlogiston paradigm) theory of phlogiston. Lavoisier grew
support when he released his remarks opposing the phlogiston theory (Perrin 47). Furthermore,
other experiments were conducted on the basis of the phlogiston theory, and complications arose
from this. Experimenters were seeing that the theory had some complications when they conducted
experiment, producing incompatible effects than the theory had suggested (Perrin). Also, the
release of the Method of Chemical Nomenclature, released in 1787 by Lavoisier, Guyton de

3. If Deutsche Bank was to merge with Dresdner Bank the connections and networking has already
been accomplished. 4. If Deutsche Bank continues with it Pan European retail banking strategy they
already have Bank 24, a division that is already retail banking oriented.
Weaknesses
1. The management of Deutsche Bank can not get along with the management of Dresdner Bank
making if difficult if not impossible for the organization to make the merge. 2. This inability of the
management to get along with the management of another firm could cause problems in the future
if they can t get along with the management of other businesses in the future. 3. Moving into other
countries in Europe is very expensive. 4. If the bank moved towards the retail banking strategy, that
kind of banking is low margined and therefore may deter investors fearing less return on their

Unferth Analysis
Nobility of Unferth
Unferth is presented halfway through the book Grendel. His presence is significant as it is the
first sign of mental equality with Grendel and another person. He is a hero of his own land and
personally believes this. Unferth is seen as a character of nobility, however he is also a foolish
human which shows through his actions when he challenges grendel, his personal definition of a
hero, along with his character during battle. When Grendel is challenged by Unferth, it is seen as
honorable and brave, however he is quickly frightened which can be seen as Gardner explains He
glanced behind him, making sure he knew exactly where the window was (Gardner). This shows us
Unferth is cautious and anxious about Grendel s presence. Throughout the apple battle, Grendel
rapidly displays superiority when he scares Unferth by throwing apples as a joke when he wanted
to battle. Unferth becomes impatient with Grendel, aggravated at the lack of professionalism. This
event shows a mental

Unferth views a hero as someone who dedicates their personal being to making the lives of
others better. He explains It kills him of course, ultimately, but it makes the whole struggle of
humanity worthwhile (Gardner 89) this is seen as what a hero does, however he does not act
this way when battling Grendel. Unferth shows he is only a hero for fame, rather than personal
fulfillment when he says It will be sung year on year and age on age that Unferth went down

give his life to be remembered by his people for an interim time. Unferth follows Grendel to his

continually attempts to prove his worthiness, however Grendel relentlessly ignores his

John Bunyan’s Pilgrime s Progress Essay
Many people wonder what it would be like to go from a dangerous city where they live and
journey to a plentiful heaven. This storyline is portrayed in John Bunyan s allegorical book,
Pilgrim s Progress. This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in
the City of Destruction, who longs to travel to the Celestial City. As Christian struggles to stay on
the right, though more difficult path, I fight to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting
ideas. I also fight to get strong enough in dance to become a professional dancer, just as Christian
has to climb the Hill of Difficulty to get to the Palace Beautiful. In order for Christian to arrive at

However, I stood strong and said no, my homework was more important to me than chatting. In
the end, I realized that by focusing on what I knew was right, I set a good example for other
people to follow. While some of my friends were mad at me, and questioned me for what I had
chosen, I soon realized that taking my path would show others how being faithful towards a goal
made life easier for me to follow God. In order for Christian to reach the Palace Beautiful, he has
to climb the Hill of Difficulty. In the same way, I had to focus on my faith in order to become
stronger person of God. Similarly, Christian discusses how the better way to go was the most
difficult way versus the two other easy, but deathly paths: Better, though difficult, the Right
Way to go, Than Wrong, though easy, where the End is Woe (Bunyan 53). Formalist and
Hypocrisy both take the easier paths, but they end up in a deadly trap. While Christian struggles
to get up the Hill of Difficulty, he makes it to the Palace alive. In the same manner, I struggled to
focus on my faith, school, and dance all at once. Even though it was harder to stay strong in my
faith, I learned that I soon became a stronger person of God. I chose to take a special Bible class in
which I had an hour to focus on the Bible and my faith. This helped me towards my life goal to
realize that focusing on one goal can often get me to my

Relationship Between Child Support And Child Relationship
Parent to Child Relationship Analyzed by Child Support and Disconnection
I am writing about the topic of how child support can affect the relationship a parent feels
towards their child. In a sense that it can make the parent feel as if the child is an expense. As
something they have to constantly keep up with like a phone bill or water bill. I chose this topic
because I feel that there is a disconnection between parents that are required to pay child support
toward their child. Those parents paying child support in most instances are only allowed to see
their child for a certain period of time. That being a weekend or every other weekend. If not at all
in the most extreme cases. This disconnection in turn can lead to a broken relationship between the
parent and the child. The parent is seen as a negative figure by the child whereas the parent sees the
child as an expense. Which can lead to other negative impacts between the family. The parent with
full custody or majority custody is a better able to raise the child and instill negative feelings about
the other parent into the child. What is significant and interesting about this particular field of
inquiry that this is constantly happening in modern time. As seen through high levels of divorce,
custody battles, and parents that are required to pay child support on a monthly basis. At times
the other parent with majority custody can even be better off as they are receiving another check
while the parent required to pay child support is at times struggling to get by. Needless to say that
the parent required to pay child support is at fault and put themselves in the situation in the first
place. The challenges I expect to face while researching are unscholarly resources in which
frustrated parents post on online websites. Even though these experiences may be first hand
insights they are most likely posted to unscholarly websites which cannot be used for this essay. A
possible thesis is, child support leads to a broken relationship between a parent and a child with the
cause of future disconnection. The research question being, Does child support make a parent feel
like their child is an expense that leads to disconnection? With many answers surrounding this

Symbols In The Destructors
Graham Greene s The Destructors (1954) is set in London nine years after the end of World War
II. The protagonist is Trevor who is the new leader of the Wormsley Common Gang. Trevor leads
the gang to destroy an old house that belongs to an old gentleman named Mr. Thomas, whom the
boys call Old Misery. Symbol is one element that supports the plot. The Glossary of Terms defines
symbol as follows: Something that means more than what it is; an object, person, situation, or
action that in addition to its literal meaning suggests other meanings as well (1647). Two symbols
from the story that support the plot are the burning of the money and the house itself. These two
symbols play a huge part in the main character s life and have a much deeper... Show more content

Old Misery lives in an old beautiful house built by Christopher Wren. The special thing about
this house is that it is the only house still standing on its block after the bombing attacks on
London from September 1940 to May 1941. This house represents Trevor s old upper class
lifestyle. This is why Trevor is so driven to destroy it. The destruction has nothing to do with
popularity for their gang. Trevor wants to get rid of all ties to his old way of living that he feels
has betrayed him. It is seen in this quote when he calls the house beautiful, T. said, It s a
beautiful house, (114). In the preceding quote we see Trevor use the word beautiful , and this is
a definitely not a word used by the Wormsley Common Gang. As seen in this in this part of the
story when Greene gives insight on Blackie s thoughts, It was the word beautiful that worried
him that belonged to a class world that you could still see parodied at the Wormsley Common
Empire (115). This house being called beautiful is unfamiliar to the gang and this house represents
the upper class society that the gang often makes fun of. This house also represents Trevor in a
particular way as a beautiful and noble thing that has been broken and ripped apart from the inside
out. When Trevor moves from the upper class society, he becomes much like this house after the
destruction broken and useless. Greene makes the symbolic connection clear: he looked round the
room crowded with the unfamiliar shadows of half things, broken things, former things (119). One
of the broken things in the room is

Essay On Black Loyalists
Who were African American Loyalists?
Black loyalists were African Americans who helped fight for Britain during the revolutionary war
in return for their promise of freedom after the war was over. There were two declarations
authorized by Britain encouraging African American slaves to escape from slavery, leave their
masters, and come over to Britain to fight. There were over 100,000 slaves that escaped from
slavery in order for their chance to gain freedom.
African American Loyalists Groups
There were two main groups of African Americans that fought the loyalist side: the black brigade
and the black pioneers. There were also other, smaller groups that black loyalists served in. These

Colonel Tye
There were many African American people that worked hard during the war, and became well
known because of this. One person was Colonel Tye. He grew up as a slave but later escaped. He
then went on to lead the Black Brigade. Tye was one of the most feared loyalist in New Jersey.
As he was fighting, he was able to gain revenge against old Patriot friends and masters. The first
battle he fought in was the Battle of Monmouth. During this battle, he freed slaves, captured
prisoners, and took supplies. The cause of his death later on was a wound he got during battle.
Thomas Peters
Thomas Peters was born in West Africa. When he was around 25, he was captured and brought
to the colonies where he became a slave. One day he escaped from slavery and went to New York.
Here he became a member of the Black Pioneers. After a long time of working for the Black

The Literary Theory Of Structuralism
The literary theory of Structuralism attempts to explain the connections between concepts, images,
and people. Particularly, the French Structuralists utilize the concept of binary comparisons in order
to explain how everything relates to each other. This theory argues that people comprehend the
world around them by the understanding the differences between objects or ideas and other objects
or ideas, e.g. understanding the dark because it is not light. Children learn the concept of opposites
so that they can describe things; they discover the difference between big and small before they
understand the notions themselves. Therefore, by using the literary theory of French Structuralism,
readers can establish the binary differences between the two sets of lovers in Much Ado about
Nothing, explaining how the use of contrasting characters reveals the complexity of love, and
comments on society s conventions in Shakespeare s day.
A leading Structuralist Ferdinand de Saussure ascertains in Course in General Linguistics that in
language there are only differences (70). These differences make up the world, and comparing them
allows readers to have a deeper understanding of life. However, binaries must play off each other
within a context in order to have meaning. Gregory Castle offers the goal of Structuralism:
Functional Structuralism is primarily concerned with language as it is manifested in social contexts
(186). The social context is the construct that illuminates

How Is Soma Used In Brave New World
When reading the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is unmistakably evident that the
use of stimulants (soma) is the leading source of the society s happiness. Drugs and medicine are
used in both societies in many comparable and contrasting ways. Our soma takes a different form
than it does in Brave New World, but a lot of the results are the same. The most common
similarity between the use of drugs in the two societies is the purpose of the drug is use. This
motive is for escaping reality. In Brave New World, all citizens in the society take soma
whenever they are stressed or emotional. This medication keeps all negative thoughts off a
person s mind, basically creating a blindness to everything around them that is corrupt. Linda,
one of the characters in the book who was from the Brave New World but lived with the savages,
shows a little bit of how soma is used in today s society when she becomes alcohol dependent.
When she no longer had access to soma, she turned to alcohol (also referred to as mescal in the
novel) as an escape from all the atrocious things she had to experience at the savage reservation

Blocking Gmo s A Crime Against Humanity
Blocking GMO s A Crime Against Humanity One of the most controversial topics of our time is
GM technology (GMO). Is it safe or not? The emotive nature of this topic is justified considering
the fact that food is paramount to human well being; all claims should be carefully examined.
However, modern scientific studies contradict commonly held opinions opposing GMO s which
are in fact founded on myths and misinformation. There are currently 2000 peer reviewed reports

the science community and the origins of misinformation. Next I will talk about why GMO s are

Soviet Union Afghanistan War
Soviet Union
Already in a middle of a war, Afghanistan was in trouble times. On December 24,1979 the soviet of

Even before the war started with the Soviet union, Afghanistan was already in conflict with a

idea of robots taking care of their children, robots should be programmed to be more predictable

How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in...
How important was the role played by Edwin Chadwick in improving public health services in the
C19th?
Edwin Chadwick was important in improving public health as his work illustrated the problems,
such as pollution from factories and a lack of clean water, associated with the majority of towns in
the Industrial revolution. However, his impact was not the only factor that had influence on public
health; other individuals, the government and public attitudes were also significant in changing the
public health services throughout the C19th.
Chadwick s first major impact was his 1842 Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring
Population , in which he showed that the poor were living in dirty, overcrowded areas which
caused a huge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Governments at that time were extremely careful to avoid any potential increase in taxes as it
would result in them eventually losing votes and losing power. However, from 1867 onwards,
working men gained the right to vote. This led to governments having to balance public health
reforms with any tax increases, as now they had to appeal to both the wealthy and the not so
wealthy. Through the 1870s and 1880s, more laws were passed to improve the conditions in towns,
one of which was the 1875 Public Health Act.
The Public Health Act of 1975 was much more effective than the one made in 1848. Unlike the
previous Health Act, this one actually made it compulsory for towns to make some changes to
conditions, instead of just making suggestions. Sewers and drains were improved, fresh water
supplies were provided and Medical Officers and sanitary inspectors were appointed. The Act also
saw that the standards of housing were improved, the pollution of rivers was stopped and factory
working hours were shortened. All of these reforms were incredibly important as they led to a high
standard of living in towns, and an overall healthier population.
By 1900, people were generally living longer, healthier lives. Life expectancy had increased for
both men and women, and towns were cleaner and safer. Although Chadwick was certainly
important in initiating these changes, he was limited by the failure of the 1848 Health Act, his

Cultural Imperialism In Walt Disney
Disney, nowadays, has been one of the most powerful brands in our society. According to Forbes
survey, Disney s brands value has been raised steadily since Walt Disney established the
company; it is now the 12th highest in the whole company of the world. This result is not
surprising because, people can easily find something about Disney, characterized products or
animated film, in daily life. There are many debates regarding an effect of Disney, including about
Dieneyfication , I will bring two main stream of critical perspective against expansion of Disney s
effect in this essay. Additionally, the term of Disneyfication will be used for indicating expansion of
Disney s influence in the following statement.
First, the theorists of Cultural Imperialism including Henry A Giroux (1994) provide some
questions against Disneyfication. They criticized it as a novel and more strong way to
internalize western ideology to children especially, the one of the United States. Hollywood
movie is also subjected to criticism often by Richard De Zoysa or Otto Newman (2002) as a tool
of expanding American soft power. Although there are lots of reasons, I will bring two of them.
First reason is violence. Many of Hollywood movies, appealing American ideology such as
Avengers, have an element of violence. However,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I mentioned before, the effect supposed to be provided to non western children is related to the
way of thinking shaped from the westerns or the United States. Consequently, Disney animation can
be a major force that spreads US values and way of life across developing countries, more
specifically in the Arab world, is of great significance (Kilbourne, 1999; Kimmel, 2004). Disney
has sold itself in the guise of innocence, packaging itself for mass appeal and the reinforcing of the

My Mom Hated Me Essay
Growing up I was an abused child who wanted nothing more than to break free of the horrible
torture that was imposed on me every day of my childhood. My mother hated me, and she was
not shy in saying so. She would belittle me as if it gave her some kind of sick pleasure in
destroying my fragile, developing ego. Naturally, I would grow up to be a person who didn t have
any ambition or goals for the future. This was because I focused all of my energy on the thoughtof
getting away. I just wanted to be free, somewhere, anywhere; it didn t matter to me.
I am not sure exactly when my mother decided that she hated me, but it was definitely apparent in
all of her actions. She would blame me for anything that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many days I would sweep up the chunks of pulled out hair that left tiny little bald marks all over
my aching head.
When I would escape I would go to my best friend s house. Her mother Denise despised my mother
and always said that if she could adopt me that she would do it in a New York minute. I loved to
be there because I felt safe. My mom hated Denise and would insult the family and call them
unspeakable obscenities. She knew that I would have rather been with my best friend s family
than with her, and she would accuse me of not having a loyal bone in my body. I did though; I was
loyal to what I thought was right and true, and it definitely wasn t beating an innocent child because
I hated my own life.
I didn t care what she thought; in my eyes she was the monster; she was the one who couldn t
accept the blame for anything. She was the one that would never apologize no matter how much
pain she had put me through.
It was obvious to me that my mother had a serious problem. The drugs that she would take just to
get through the day and the abusive childhood had played a role in the person that she had become.
Her father had started the cycle of abuse and my mother let it continue turning her into the weak
domineering, selfish evil mother that I never wanted or deserved.
I always blamed myself for her behavior, partly because every time that she would punch me, I
always told myself that I would never forgive her. I

  • 2. Burial In Sophocles Antigone In Sophocles play Antigone, two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices fight for the thrown of Thebes. The war comes to an end when both brothers die fighting for the honor, and their uncle Creon becomes the king of Thebes. Upon his coronation, Creon issues a decree that Eteocles, the former king of Thebes, will be honored with a traditional military burial, while his brother Polynices will be left unwept, unburied, a lovely treasure for birds that scan the field and feast to their heart s content (Sophocles, 60). Antigone, one of the two sisters, outraged by this ruling, takes matters into her own hands and goes against this newly established law by properly burying her brother. Ultimately Antigone sets aside the political law and does what s morally right by honoring her brother with a traditional burial. I will argue that Antigone s decision to bury her brother was the right decision. While she may have disobeyed the law put in place by the newly appointed inexperienced king of Thebes, she was in turn honoring her brother and the long standing traditions and expectations of the g ds, principles much more important than the arbitrary laws of the state. I would argue that most importantly, Creon s law was arbitrary. Creon says in a discussion he has with Haemon, Am I to rule this land for others or myself? after a short dialogue back and forth where Haemon argues that a city is not owned by one man alone, Creon declares that The city is the king s that s the law ... • 3. Honor in Much Ado About Nothing Essay Throughout the history of the world, honor has been an important part of life. In literature, as well, honor plays an important role in many plots and the development of almost any character. Shakespeare s play Much Ado About Nothing is no exception. In this comedy about love and marriage, honor is revealed as the primary reason for many of the actions taken by several different characters. When Claudiobreaksoff his wedding with Hero, he does it because he believes she is not chastised as she claims to be and in being such, she would dishonor him as well as her father if the marriage were to proceed as planned. Her honor is disgraced for her actions and Claudio will no longer accept her as his wife because of the dishonor she has caused him. Shakespeare uses both Claudio and Leonato to represent the males of the time and the honor code they were held to. Claudio is in no way held to the same pre marital expectations as Hero, which, at the time, was the case for all men. For instance, when Hero is accused of being with a man prior to her marriage, no one questions what man and, quite frankly, no one cares what man. Shakespeare also shows how men are judged and given honor based on how their women act. When Leonato learns of the accusations his daughter receives on her wedding day he scolds her and says, Wherefore? Why doth not every living thing Cry shame upon he? Could she here deny The story that is printed in her blood? Do not live, Hero; do not open thine eyes... Why had I not with charitable hand Took up a beggar s issue at my gates, Who smirched thus and mired with infamy, I might have said, no part of it is mine; This shame derives itself from unknown lions ? (IV, i) This quote shows how a father at that time would wish to have no part of his daughter for committing such acts because he knows of the dishonorable reputation he will receive as a result. In the time of Shakespeare, men and women were held to different standards and honored and dishonored for different reasons. Chastity is one of those reasons. For a ... • 4. Legal Issues Over The Legal System The career that I chose to focus on was legal area as far as becoming an attorney that practices family and criminal court. I chose this area of study because I have become interested in legal issues over the past few years that lead me to the decision to practice law. Upon deciding what I wanted to do with my career, I then decided that I want to first start out as a lawyer and then progress to becoming a judge where I plan on retiring from. I decided I would rather practice criminal law and family law as a prosecutor rather than becoming a defense attorney. I don t feel that my arguments are strong enough to be a defense attorney and do plan on working on those skills for improvement. However I am a firm believe that justice served is the main reason individuals lean to the legal system for help. During my research for my chosen career I found an article that allowed me to look deeper into the legal system. The article focuses on the importance of the local common law in resolving various related disputes (Decker, 2014). Topics discussed include relationship between the local common law with the customs, social norms and local legal culture, role of the local courts of the U.S. in the construction, implementation and enforcement of the common law and relationship between the common law and access to justice (Decker, 2014). It further discusses the importance of the legal scholarship in construction of the common law (Decker, 2014). After reading this article it basically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ernest Hemingway was brought up in a very conservative but yet unusual house. The reason I iterate unusual is because his mother, Grace Hemingway is the one that provides the financial stability in their household and does not do any house chores, she was an strong willed women but was unsupportive and bashful, whereas his father Clarence Hemingway played more of the mother role because he would do the house chores and did not make as much as Grace, That is unusual at that time frame in history because men were the breadwinners of the households and the women would do all the house chores. The things that I believe that most influenced Ernest Hemingway psychologically through his life would have to be the role his mother had on him and also the influence women besides his mother, and it could be seen with the characters Margot Macomber and Francis Macomber from Ernest Hemingway s story , The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber . Margot Macomber, has strong similarities to that of Ernest Hemingway s mother, Grace Hemingway. They are both strong willed women who do not need a male companionship but are in their relationship for their benefit. For Margot Macomber, it was the financial lifestyle that her husband Francis brought to her life which was why she never thought of leaving him, and for Grace Hemingway she was with her husband because ... In this case too the CEO of Porsche, just wanted to administer each and everything according to his own ways and rules, but on the other hand the CEO of Volkswagen, even after facing huge loses wanted to continue on with his strategy because he was quite confident about his strategy and clearly had a broader outlook of the scenario. Therefore, due to having different mindsets, there was a conflict between the ideas of two which led to the decline of one of them. These conflicts can be summed up in the following couple of questions: 1.Identify and discuss the sources of conflict between Porsche and Volkswagen executives. Well, throughout this case there was a sense of internal war between the executives of two of the world s largest automobile companies. Wiedeking, the CEO of Porsche, can be seen as a dominating personality throughout this case. Wiedeking was famous for his efficient production and astute marketing, which turned Porsche into world s most profitable car company. Therefore, keeping this same attitude in mind, he wanted to make some major changes in the Volkswagen group(VW) because he was aiming to achieve something big. He wanted to remove inefficient operations and also insisted on shutting down the production lines of some cars like Phaeton and Buggati , which according to him were not highly profitable and were a commercial failure. On the other hand, Ferdinand Piech, the CEO of Volkswagen group, had something else in his mind. Unlike Wiedeking, who only focused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story focuses on immigrant Chinese grandparents from the Xi family who came to America to be with their son and his children, only to be driven away by their grandchildren s hostility towards everything Chinese that started with their dislike for their traditional names. The children are trying to Americanize themselves as much as they can while the grandparents are trying to keep everything as traditional as they can whereas the son of the grandparents tries to act as a neutral barrier of sorts that ultimately fails when the grandparents move out. But, now in the United States 1 out of 50 states have prostitution legal. Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal. But it is still going on in other states in the United States. • 30. Relationship Between Child Support And Child Relationship Parent to Child Relationship Analyzed by Child Support and Disconnection I am writing about the topic of how child support can affect the relationship a parent feels towards their child. In a sense that it can make the parent feel as if the child is an expense. As something they have to constantly keep up with like a phone bill or water bill. I chose this topic because I feel that there is a disconnection between parents that are required to pay child support toward their child. Those parents paying child support in most instances are only allowed to see their child for a certain period of time. That being a weekend or every other weekend. If not at all in the most extreme cases. This disconnection in turn can lead to a broken relationship between the parent and the child. The parent is seen as a negative figure by the child whereas the parent sees the child as an expense. Which can lead to other negative impacts between the family. The parent with full custody or majority custody is a better able to raise the child and instill negative feelings about the other parent into the child. What is significant and interesting about this particular field of inquiry that this is constantly happening in modern time. As seen through high levels of divorce, custody battles, and parents that are required to pay child support on a monthly basis. At times the other parent with majority custody can even be better off as they are receiving another check while the parent required to pay child support is at times struggling to get by. Needless to say that the parent required to pay child support is at fault and put themselves in the situation in the first place. The challenges I expect to face while researching are unscholarly resources in which frustrated parents post on online websites. Even though these experiences may be first hand insights they are most likely posted to unscholarly websites which cannot be used for this essay. A possible thesis is, child support leads to a broken relationship between a parent and a child with the cause of future disconnection. The research question being, Does child support make a parent feel like their child is an expense that leads to disconnection? With many answers surrounding this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This house represents Trevor s old upper class lifestyle. This is why Trevor is so driven to destroy it. The destruction has nothing to do with popularity for their gang. Trevor wants to get rid of all ties to his old way of living that he feels has betrayed him. It is seen in this quote when he calls the house beautiful, T. said, It s a beautiful house, (114). • 33. The Literary Theory Of Structuralism The literary theory of Structuralism attempts to explain the connections between concepts, images, and people. Particularly, the French Structuralists utilize the concept of binary comparisons in order to explain how everything relates to each other. This theory argues that people comprehend the world around them by the understanding the differences between objects or ideas and other objects or ideas, e.g. understanding the dark because it is not light. Children learn the concept of opposites so that they can describe things; they discover the difference between big and small before they understand the notions themselves. Therefore, by using the literary theory of French Structuralism, readers can establish the binary differences between the two sets of lovers in Much Ado about Nothing, explaining how the use of contrasting characters reveals the complexity of love, and comments on society s conventions in Shakespeare s day. A leading Structuralist Ferdinand de Saussure ascertains in Course in General Linguistics that in language there are only differences (70). These differences make up the world, and comparing them allows readers to have a deeper understanding of life. However, binaries must play off each other within a context in order to have meaning. Gregory Castle offers the goal of Structuralism: Functional Structuralism is primarily concerned with language as it is manifested in social contexts (186). The social context is the construct that illuminates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Southern states were left in economic and politic distress and faced renewed social issues. The objective of Reconstruction in the South was to restore the South economically, award freed African Americans the rights to be equal citizens in the eyes of the law, and repair the breakage in the Union. Though the people worked to restore the South they were unable to get over the differences and realities needed to become whole again. The South was left in ruins after the war. Freedmen were never able to make enough to support themselves and fell further into debt. Not to mention the major drop in prices of major cash crops that once fueled the South s economy. Though the whole idea was to entrust freedmen with their independence and allow the ability to build wealth, but the freedmen were practically remaining slaves but to the land rather than the landowners. Even those who migrated to cities in order to leave the plantations were unable to create a standard life. Many freedmen in the city were unable to get substantial wages and lived a hard life. In an interview with a black labor it is explained, He admitted to a journalist in 1870 that he had difficulties making ends meet on $1.50 a day (457). It was common that laborers working in factories or as maids/laundresses could barely afford to live. Reconstruction was to help these people and help the economy but it never quite succeeded. In the same case, though given the so called freedoms and rights freedmen struggled to achieve what was promised. Though the goals of reconstruction were somewhat reached, the ideas of equality were not completely fulfilled. In order to help the freedmen the Freedmen s Bureau was created. How Is Soma Used In Brave New World When reading the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, it is unmistakably evident that the use of stimulants (soma) is the leading source of the society s happiness. Drugs and medicine are used in both societies in many comparable and contrasting ways. Our soma takes a different form than it does in Brave New World, but a lot of the results are the same. The most common similarity between the use of drugs in the two societies is the purpose of the drug is use. This motive is for escaping reality. In Brave New World, all citizens in the society take soma whenever they are stressed or emotional. This medication keeps all negative thoughts off a person s mind, basically creating a blindness to everything around them that is corrupt. Linda, one of the characters in the book who was from the Brave New World but lived with the savages, shows a little bit of how soma is used in today s society when she becomes alcohol dependent. When she no longer had access to soma, she turned to alcohol (also referred to as mescal in the novel) as an escape from all the atrocious things she had to experience at the savage reservation (Brave New World 125). The emotive nature of this topic is justified considering the fact that food is paramount to human well being; all claims should be carefully examined. However, modern scientific studies contradict commonly held opinions opposing GMO s which are in fact founded on myths and misinformation. There are currently 2000 peer reviewed reports which document the safety and wholesomeness of GM foods. (Genera.2014) My goal in this paper is to help open dialogs between activists and the scientific community. Green activists and privileged world citizens deny life and health to millions when they block the progress and use of genetic modification. To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four sections and two sub sections. I will begin with and brief description and summary of GMO s and the scientific consensus on the safety and efficacy of this technology, public opinion that contradicts the science community and the origins of misinformation. Next I will talk about why GMO s are a major component in solving food insecurity, death, sickness and poverty. In the third section of this paper involves the efforts of green campaigners who undermine science and block GMO technology. To conclude, I will provide examples of the reality of food insecurity worldwide and highlight one significant area to focus resolution efforts, Golden Rice. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edwin Chadwick was important in improving public health as his work illustrated the problems, such as pollution from factories and a lack of clean water, associated with the majority of towns in the Industrial revolution. However, his impact was not the only factor that had influence on public health; other individuals, the government and public attitudes were also significant in changing the public health services throughout the C19th. However, from 1867 onwards, working men gained the right to vote. This led to governments having to balance public health reforms with any tax increases, as now they had to appeal to both the wealthy and the not so wealthy. Through the 1870s and 1880s, more laws were passed to improve the conditions in towns, one of which was the 1875 Public Health Act. The Public Health Act of 1975 was much more effective than the one made in 1848. Unlike the previous Health Act, this one actually made it compulsory for towns to make some changes to conditions, instead of just making suggestions. Sewers and drains were improved, fresh water supplies were provided and Medical Officers and sanitary inspectors were appointed. The Act also saw that the standards of housing were improved, the pollution of rivers was stopped and factory working hours were shortened. All of these reforms were incredibly important as they led to a high standard of living in towns, and an overall healthier population. By 1900, people were generally living longer, healthier lives. Life expectancy had increased for both men and women, and towns were cleaner and safer.
