each with its own personality you may well want to adopt one. Now is your chance!
The funds raised from our auction tonight will go towards our national charity’s work
particularly in enabling blind teenagers to access, engage with and enjoy fashion
alongside their sighted friends.
Today we launched a touch and sound teds pack featuring some of the bears
that have blessed our childhood, such as Pooh, Paddington and Pudsey. So, when
Lloyds TSB Private Banking generously offered to give us an evening at the V&A
the concept for WanTed came naturally...fashion and teds.
Our sincere thanks go to Steiff and to all our wonderful dressers for their amazing
efforts in creating an inspired and exciting collection for tonight’s auction. As you

in making each very special bear unique.

Please note that these special bears are not toys, they are decorative or collectors items only.
All the bears in this catalogue are traditional Steiff teddy bears,
fully jointed, made by hand using the finest cream mohair, the bear’s
design pays tribute to the famous 1950s Steiff design called ‘Jackie’
(the first to have a tummy button). Only 20 of these unique bears
have been made exclusively for the Living Paintings ‘WanTed’ event.
Each has the famous Steiff limited edition white ear tag and
‘Button-in-Ear’ and is 52cm high (20 ½ in), 35cm wide (13 ¾ in).

3. Tedby Twiggy
Fifi is dressed as a 1920s flapper; she wears
a mauve chiffon tiered dress with spaghetti
straps, trimmed with jewelled matching flowers.
Across her forehead she wears a mauve
sequined headband trimmed with another flower
and surmounted with mauve feathers. Perhaps
Twiggy was inspired by her first leading role
as the flapper Polly in ‘The Boy Friend’ of 1971.
Teddy is signed ‘Twiggy x ‘on her right paw
in black pen.
Twiggy was born in North London on September
19th, 1949. She was named ‘The Face of ‘66’
by the Daily Express. In the mid 60s at 16 years
of age, Twiggy became internationally known
as the world’s first supermodel, her photographic
modelling success epitomising the age.
Twiggy went on to become a successful actress
in film, stage and television, beginning her acting
career by starring in Ken Russell’s film ‘The Boy
Friend’, for which she won two Golden Globe
awards; most promising newcomer and best
actress in a musical. Since 2005 Twiggy has
been part of the phenomenally successful Marks
Spencer advertising campaign. Twiggy has
also been a guest judge on the top US reality
show America’s Next Top Model.
Currently Twiggy is the subject of a National
Portrait Gallery exhibition and accompanying
book Twiggy: A Life In Photographs. Her latest
album Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance was released
in September 2009.

4. Tedby Georgina Chapman, Marchesa
Luisa is designed and made by Georgina
Chapman herself, and is quite naturally wearing
a red-carpet outfit, from the label that is famed
for its Oscar gowns. The spectacular outfit
incorporates a decadently pleated and scrolling
skirt, below a lavish jewel-encrusted bodice
and delicate cream spaghetti-straps. Luisa
also wears an oversized black satin bow upon
her head, jewelled earrings and red lipstick!
She is a well travelled bear having flown to
New York and back to be dressed. She is signed
‘MARCHESA Georgina Chapman’ on her left
foot in black.
Georgina Chapman, born in 1976 in London,
is a fashion designer, former actress, and
model. She, along with Keren Craig, co-founded
Marchesa, and is designer and creative director
of the brand, catering to women in both
the entertainment and fashion industries.
During her twenties, Georgina modelled
for Select then Next Models.
After graduating from Wimbledon College
of Art in 2001, she started her career
as a costume designer. Prompting the debut
of her collection, industry veteran, the late
Isabella Blow, noticed a dress she had
designed at an event in the UK. This in turn
led to her introduction to the design community.
In 2004, Marchesa was born. The company’s
namesake and muse, Marchesa Luisa Casati,
is the noted eccentric European style icon.
With Casati’s vision of fashion meets art
in mind, along with Georgina’s expertise
in design and draping, she continues
to create collections with both distinctive
and iconic style. Vintage silhouettes with
a modern aesthetic inspire her designs.
Georgina has been featured in numerous top-tier
publications, including Vogue: January 2008
Best Dressed, W, Vogue UK, Harper’s Bazaar,
Avenue, Vanity Fair, and Elle. In 2006, the label
was named one of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion
Fund’s top ten finalists, in 2007 it won the
British fashion awards for Red Carpet Designer
of the Year, and in 2008 won Britain’s Best
Business Award.
In addition to her design career, Georgina’s
film credits include Awake, The Nanny Diaries,
Factory Girl, The Business and Match Point.
She appeared in the Fall 2008 Gap advertising
campaign, and was most recently named as
‘Garrard’s’ first guest jewellery designer. The
Georgina Chapman for Garrard collection was
unveiled in boutiques in October 2009.
She and her husband, Harvey Weinstein share
their time between New York City, Connecticut,
and London.

6. Tedby Joan Collins
Dynasty is an extremely glamourous bear,
just like the lady who dreamt her up, Joan
Collins. She wears a decadent bias-cut
liquid-satin trained gown designed to accentuate
her curves, which is gathered in two places
at the hem and trimmed with matching chiffon
ribbon. The bodice is overlaid with matching
chiffon printed with minute gold stars, and
fabulous net shoulders complete the ensemble.
The waist is encircled with a plaited satin
belt reminiscent of the 80s styling of Joan’s
enviable wardrobe. Dynasty is accessorised
to the nines, and ready to party; she has applied
false eyelashes, wears a diamante studded
tiara, matching drop earrings and carries not
only a red feather boa, but also a black velvet
stole lined in black satin, as this is England
in February! (Dynasty also wears leopard
print panties).
Joan Collins has appeared in more than 60
feature films and dozens of television series,
including creating the role of Alexis Carrington
on Dynasty, one of the most highly viewed
television dramas of all time. She is a regular
diarist for The Spectator and a contributor
to numerous publications, including The Daily
Mail, The Telegraph and Harper’s Bazaar.
Joan Collins has performed on Broadway, the
West End, and in national tours in the UK and
North America. She has received many awards,
including a Golden Globe and a People’s Choice.
On the humanitarian front, Joan Collins is devoted
to the well-being of women, children and families
and regularly lends her support and celebrity
to charitable causes. In 1997, in recognition
of a lifetime of contributions to the arts, culture
and charitable causes, the Queen honoured
her with an O.B.E.

7. Tedby ELLE Magazine
ELLE Magazine have styled their bear as they
would a fashion shoot, starting the creative
process by constructing a mood board to capture
their inspirations for ELLEbear Elbaz’s outfit.
This mood board is signed by some of the team
on the reverse. In homage to one of the greatest
designers of our time, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin,
they have named Teddy ‘ELLEbear Elbaz’ which
is embroidered in red chain-stitch on his denim
shirt. ELLEbear Elbaz also wears a pair of
classic blue denim jeans, and a printed cotton
neckerchief at a jaunty angle at the neck.

8. Tedby the cast of Hairspray
Tracy Turnbear emulates her ‘Hairspray’
namesake, the girl who loves to dance, Tracy
Turnblad. Teddy wears a fabulous dancing
outfit which directly replicates one worn during
the show, with a fitted princess line bodice
and flared skirt. The fabric is printed with
a 60s swirling pattern on chiffon, overlaid onto
a similarly printed satin, trimmed at the hem
and cuffs with baby-blue ostrich feathers, and
at the neck with a double row of pink sequins.
Tracy Turnbear also wears matching satin
bows at her waist, with long tails at her back,
and upon a headband.
Big hair, big heart, big hit: Hairspray is the
ultimate feel-good show! Since opening in
October 2007 to unprecedented critical acclaim,
Hairspray has delighted over a million audience
members, won Best Musical at the 2008 Olivier
Awards in addition to an impressive array of
other major awards, and welcomed a series of
incredible star performances. It is now in its final
weeks in the West End, closing on 28 March
2010 before a major UK tour. For its final weeks,

9. Tedby Stella McCartney
Magdalena is wearing a characteristically
stylish and tailored outfit in ‘nude’ tones
by Stella McCartney. She has a fashionable
‘boyfriend style’ lined wool jacket with single
-button fastening, and satin grosgrain collar,
which unbuttons to reveal a spaghetti strap
nude satin gown, with a sparkling chiffon front
panel applied with silver sequins.
Born and raised in London and the English
countryside, Stella McCartney graduated
from Central St Martins in 1995. A signature
style of sharp tailoring, natural confidence
and sexy femininity was immediately apparent
in her first collection. After only two collections,
in 1997, she was appointed the Creative
Director of Chloe in Paris and enjoyed great
success during her tenure.
In 2001, Stella McCartney launched her own
fashion house under her name in a joint venture
with Gucci Group and showed her first collection
in Paris in October 2001. A lifelong vegetarian,
Stella McCartney does not use any leather
or fur in her designs. Her collections include
women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, lingerie,
eyewear, fragrance and organic skincare. Her
first perfume, “Stella”, launched successfully
in September 2003, and she now operates
16 stores.
In November 2005, the hugely successful
one-off collection ‘Stella McCartney for
HM’ sold out worldwide in record time.
In 2007, she unveiled CARE by Stella McCartney,
the first luxury organic skincare line, containing
100% organic active ingredients which took
more than 3 years to develop, in collaboration
with YSL Beauté.
In 2008, a new lingerie line was launched.
Most recently, in November 2009, Stella
McCartney collaborated with Gap on a Kids
and Baby collection which has been extended
into a second season to launch in March 2010.

10. Tedby Lulu Guinness
Henri sports two of Lulu’s memorable
creations, a tote bag and beret purse. The red
felt beret ‘Ooh la la’ purse has a clip fastening,
is embroidered ‘L.G.’ upon the reverse, and
‘Ooh la la’ on the black satin lining. Henri
also wears a highly artistic stripey printed silk
neck-tie, and clutches paint brushes in his
left paw. Henri’s left foot is signed ‘Love Lulu’
with four kisses in black. He travels in a printed
canvas bag with textured coloured embroidery,
depicting a Lulu Guinness shop; a silhouette
of Lulu herself peeps out of one of the windows
above the shop. The double-handled tote bag
with zipped opening is lined in striped cotton,
has an interior zip wall pocket and a mobile
phone pocket. This gorgeous bag is 37cm
high x 45cm wide.
Lulu Guinness, famous for exquisite,
witty handbags and accessories, originally
launched her company in 1989 and instantly
became a ‘must’ in every fashion aficionado’s
international address book. Wild praise in the
fashion media paved the way for Lulu Guinness
shops in London, New York and Tokyo. Her
unique creations are also sold in department
and speciality stores worldwide.
Lulu’s collectable bags have been described
as ‘tomorrow’s treasures’ and have been
collected by many museums. They have also
been subjects of two exhibitions in Sotheby’s
London and New York. The Florist Basket
and the Violet Hanging Basket are just two
of the designs that have been included in
the permanent fashion collection at the VA
Museum. Meanwhile her bags are seen on
the arms of an ever-expanding list of celebrities,
amongst them Dita von Teese, Helena Bonham
Carter, Jemima Khan, Sophie Dahl, Rachel
Weisz, Keira Knightley, Claudia Schiffer and
Debra Messing.
Lulu’s strong personal style and her original
ideas have played a large part in her success
with her design inspiration springing partly from
retro glamour and partly from modern chic.

11. Tedby Sir Richard Branson
Dicky-B is dressed in typically informal style,
perhaps about to plan another adventure or
even just about to present a board meeting,
although not before he has enjoyed a cup
of tea in his ‘RB♥T virgin.com’ mug. He has
a splendid Branson-esque beard, and wears
a characteristic navy knitted jumper, striped
in royal blue, green and white, with a ‘Virgin’
enamel badge. Dicky-B also wears slim-fit
blue jeans, and carries a cotton haversack on
his back printed in red ‘Virgin, The Gathering,
Return to Necker Island’.
Richard Branson was born in 1950 and educated
at Stowe School. It was here that he set up
Student magazine when he was 16.
In 1970 he founded Virgin as a mail order record
retailer, and shortly afterwards opened a record
shop in Oxford Street, London. In 1972 he built
a recording studio in Oxfordshire where the first
Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded ‘Tubular Bells’.
In 1977 Virgin signed the Sex Pistols and went
on to sign many household names from Culture
Club to the Rolling Stones, helping to make
Virgin Music one of the top six record companies
in the world.
With around 200 companies in over 30 countries,
the Virgin Group has now expanded into leisure,
travel, tourism, mobile, broadband, TV, radio,
music festivals, finance and health and through
Virgin Green Fund they are investing in renewable
energy and resource efficiency.
In February 2007- they announced the Virgin
Earth Challenge - a $25 million prize to encourage
a viable technology which will result in the net
removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse
gases. In July of the same year he joined good
friend Peter Gabriel, Nelson Mandela, Graça
Machel, and Desmond Tutu to announce the
formation of The Elders, a group of leaders to
contribute their wisdom, independent leadership
and integrity to tackle some of the world’s
toughest problems.
He is also very proud of the work of Virgin Unite,
Virgin’s not-for-profit foundation, which continues
to focus on entrepreneurial approaches to social
and environmental issues and enjoys supporting
their work in every way he can.

12. Tedby Dame Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood harks back to the spirit
of punk with this androgynous bear called
Action Bear. He wears a signature pleated
tartan woollen kilt and printed slogan t-shirt,
bearing the company logo on the reverse.
The T-shirt slogan reads ‘act FAST SLOW
down STOP CLIMATE CHANGE’; this was
a limited edition t-shirt launched in 2009 to
support the efforts of rainforest nations at the
United Nations Climate Change Conference
in Copenhagen to stop deforestation. The
outfit is accessorised with a fabulous sequinned
green and blue cross-body bag in the form of
a fish, a favourite Westwood motif. Teddy also
wears the famous Vivienne Westwood enamelled
‘orb’ brooch, and another brooch initialled ‘AR’,
which stand for ‘Active Resistance’, the name
of Westwood’s movement to get young people
involved in the world they live in through art and
in so doing becoming resistant to propaganda.
Teddy’s left foot is signed ‘Vivienne Westwood
♥’ in red.
Vivienne Westwood has been designing for
almost 40 years. She first began in 1971
with her partner Malcolm McLaren, showcasing
ideas at their shop on London’s Kings Road
which was renamed with each change of
concept, from Let It Rock to Sex to World’s End
as it is known today. Through their shop, the
pair redefine street culture with punk and
subsequent collections like “Seditionaries”
and “Pirates” led to the New Romantic movement.
But in 1986, Westwood shifted away from
youth culture in favour of traditional Savile
Row tailoring techniques, British fabrics,
and 17th and 18th century art.
Today Westwood is recognised as one of the
most influential fashion designers in the world.
In 2004, a major retrospective of her works
was shown at the VA, the largest exhibition
of its kind for any living British designer.
It subsequently toured the world for five years
and was exhibited in over ten cities. Vivienne
Westwood’s contribution to fashion was officially
recognised in 2006, when she was appointed
Dame Commander of the British Empire by
Her Majesty The Queen. In 2007, Vivienne
Westwood was awarded the Outstanding
Achievement in Fashion at the British Fashion
Awards. Westwood remains completely
independent and her business continues
to develop globally.

13. Tedby Nova Dando for Selfridges
Selfridges Bear is friendly and fun. He’s
interested in all things fashion and fabulous
and is inspired by music and culture in general.
His outfit is designed in collaboration with
Nova Dando, the stylist and costume designer,
who specialises in creating individual pieces
for the UK’s biggest stars including La Roux
and Lady GaGa.
Like all big stars dressed to impress by his
celebrity stylist, Selfridges Bear likes to make
an entrance, so his outfit will be a ‘best kept
secret’ until the big night when it will be
revealed in all its glory!
Selfridges was founded by Harry Gordon
Selfridge in 1909 and run by him until he retired
in 1940 and took on the role of President.
In 2003 Galen Weston purchased Selfridges
and is closely involved with their daughter
Alannah as Creative Director, in the
development and growth of the company.
On the store’s opening day, March 15th 1909,
Harry Gordon Selfridge placed an advertisement
that contained two phrases; he referred to
the “pleasures of shopping” and that the store
was where “all are welcome”. That philosophy
set the path for the business and still
resonates today.

14. Tedby Matthew Williamson
Alessandro is accessorised with elegant
simplicity – he sports a Williamson signature
hot-pink satin bow tie, bejewelled with paste
gems in various pink and red tones, and
a similar heart-shaped brooch. The brooch
was part of a specially designed range of
accessories for Valentine’s Day, 2009, and
retailled at £95. Alessandro is signed on this
right paw ‘Matthew Williamson’ in black pen.
Graduating from Central St Martins in June
1994 with a BA in Fashion Design and Printed
Textiles, Matthew Williamson’s first job following
graduation was a freelance design project with
Marni. Matthew was then employed by British
fashion company, Monsoon and Accessorize.
The luxury fashion house, Matthew Williamson,
was founded in February 1997 by himself and
CEO, Joseph Velosa.
In September 1997 Matthew Williamson
showed his infamous debut collection, ‘Electric
Angels’, during London Fashion Week. Bias
cut dresses and separates in exotic shades
of tangerine, fuchsia and magenta were worn
by models Kate Moss, Helena Christensen
and Jade Jagger. This unique collection
of bright, intricately detailed pieces defined
and set the pace for the highly recognisable
Matthew Williamson signature aesthetic.
In 2005 Matthew Williamson took over as
Creative Director at LVMH owned Italian house,
Emilio Pucci, whilst continuing at the design
helm of his namesake company. In September
2008 he returned to London full time in order
to focus fully on his own label’s forthcoming
ventures and expansion.
Matthew Williamson’s collections have continued
to gather momentum, cementing his reputation
as an internationally renowned designer and one
of the UK’s leading designer talents. In September
2007 Matthew Williamson celebrated the label’s
10th anniversary by returning to London Fashion
Week for a show which included an exclusive
performance by legendary artist, Prince. An
exhibition dedicated to his retrospective titled,
“Matthew Williamson – 10 Years in Fashion”
was also held at the Design Museum, London.
Matthew Williamson won the Red Carpet
Designer of the Year at the 2008 British
Fashion Awards; previously having been
awarded ELLE Designer of the Year in 2004
and the 2005 Moet and Chandon Fashion
Tribute Award. He has also been nominated
3 times for Designer of the Year at the
British Fashion Awards.
In September 2009, Matthew Williamson
was invited by the British Fashion Council
to return to celebrate London Fashion Week’s
25th anniversary.

15. Tedby Holland Holland for Jamie Oliver
Master Henry Harris is dressed for a day’s
shooting. He wears a pale green Holland
Holland baseball cap, a smartly striped blue
cotton shirt, and a Harris tweed shooting
waistcoat complete with shoulder patches and
three buttons stamped ‘Holland Holland’.
Master Henry Harris also wears a silk Holland
Holland scarf about his neck to keep out
the wind, and a pair of sand-coloured corduroy
breeches. Teddy also wears a Holland
Holland enamel badge on his waistcoat.
He is signed ‘Big Love Jamie O xxx’ on
his left paw; Jamie Oliver is a regular friend
on these shooting excursions.
The finest bespoke sporting guns and rifles
in the world have been made in London by
Holland Holland, ‘The Royal Gunmaker’,
since 1835. Hand carved and shaped by
highly skilled craftsmen to fit the customer
to within a thousandth of an inch, their guns
have been the benchmark for excellence
in the guntrade ever since. Not only do
their patrons include generations of aristocracy
from all over the world, both business people
and celebrities are increasingly joining
their number.
In part, this is due to the amazingly popular
sport of clay pigeon shooting and the fact
that Holland Holland have their own private
shooting grounds just 17 miles from the
city centre, which is always busy hosting
private lessons, gun fittings and corporate
shoots for leading businesses.
The Holland Holland gunroom in London
is a traditional English gunroom, selling new
and used shotguns and rifles. In addition it

16. Tedby Alice Temperley for Glastonbury Festival
Ziggy is ready to attend the 40th Anniversary
Glastonbury Festival in Somerset; he is
dressed in boho prints and designs from
Temperley’s latest diffusion range, ALICE,

Alice Temperley was born in England in
1975, trained at London’s Central Saint Martin’s
College of Art and finished her studies with
a Masters degree at the Royal College of Art.
Besides a thorough training in the traditional
disciplines, Temperley specialised in fabric
technology and print, believing that these
understandings are beneficial to the creative
process as they enable the design to start
with the fabric and its construction and work
upwards from there. This led to the winning
of many awards from a young age including
the Award for Innovation from Central
Saint Martin’s and English Print Designer
of the Year 1999 at Indigo, Paris. More
recently Alice was awarded the Glamour
Magazine Designer of the Year Award, the
ELLE Magazine Young Designer of the Year
Award along with The Walpole Award
for British Design Excellence.
She was also named one of Britain’s
top 30 business women.

17. Tedby Sir Derek Jacobi
Claw Claw Clawdius is rather like his alter
ego ‘I Claudius’; he has a stutter and a twitch,
hence his name! He wears a splendid gold
satin crown of vine leaves, a white cotton tunic
trimmed with gold and surmounted with a
stripe of purple velvet applied with gold braid
to indicate his elevated rank of Caesar. He
wears grey sandals on his feet with straps
wound round the leg to mid-calf. Claw Claw
Clawdius is signed ‘Derek Jacobi’ in black
pen upon his left paw.
‘I, Claudius’ was an award-winning twelve
-part drama by BBC/London Film Production
broadcast in 1976, starring Derek Jacobi
as Claudius, and based on Robert Graves’
epic novels published in 1934, about the decline
of the Roman civilisation in the first century AD.
Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus
lived from 10 BC- AD 54, and his reign
saw an expansion of the empire, including
the conquest of Britain.
Sir Derek Jacobi, is an English actor and
film director. Although an established actor
of stage and screen since 1960, his big
breakthrough did not come until 1976
when as the title role of the BBC’s blockbuster
series I, Claudius his increasing reputation
was finally cemented with his performance
as the stammering, twitching Emperor.
In more recent years, Jacobi has narrated
the BBC’s children’s programme ‘In the Night
Garden’, played Nell’s grandfather in ITV’s
Christmas 2007 adaptation of ‘The Old Curiosity
Shop’, and returned to the stage to play Malvolio
in Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ for the Donmar
Warehouse at Wyndham’s Theatre in London.
The role won him the Laurence Olivier Award
for Best Actor proving his love of Shakespeare.
He appeared in no less than five films in 2009;
‘Morris: A Life With Bells On’, ‘Hippie Hippie
Shake’, ‘Endgame’, ‘Adam Resurrected’ and
‘Charles Dickens’s England’. He was awarded
his British CBE in 1994 in the New Year’s
Honors for services to Drama.
Sir Derek, who starred alongside Russell
Crowe in ‘Gladiator’ has lent his support and
voice to Living Paintings for many years.

18. Tedby Disney for Julian Emma Kitchener-Fellowes
Mary Bear wears a striped cotton blouse
with a sensibly high collar, trimmed with a
red neck-tie and two mother-of-pearl buttons.
She also wears a prim and pristine white cotton
petticoat beneath her royal blue wool skirt suit,
the jacket lined in shot satin and trimmed with
black velvet collar, pockets and cuffs, and black
facetted buttons. Mary Bear is accessorised
with a black straw boater with silk flowers, and
carries her famous ‘bottomless’ carpet bag and
black parasol with ‘talking’ parrot handle. Upon
her feet are a pair of stout and serviceable black
laced boots. To paraphrase Mary Poppins’ own
words, “As I expected. Mary Bear, practically
perfect in every way.” Thanks to Disney she
is beautifully created with the greatest of care
and attention to detail.
Julian Fellowes, actor, writer, director, producer,
was educated at Ampleforth, Magdalene College,
Cambridge and The Webber Douglas Academy
of Dramatic Art. He worked in repertory at
Northampton and Harrogate before appearing
in the West End productions of ‘A Touch
of Spring’, ‘Six of One’, ‘Joking Apart’ and
‘Present Laughter’. He is probably best known
for the BBC series, ‘Aristocrats’, and for his
portrayal of the incorrigible Lord Kilwillie in the
BBC’s popular Sunday night series, ‘Monarch
of the Glen’. On the big screen, he has been
seen in many films, including ‘Shadowlands’,
‘Damage’, ‘Place Vendôme’, ‘Fellow Traveller’,
and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’. As a writer for
television, he produced the scripts of ‘Little
Lord Fauntleroy’ (winner of an International
EMMY, 1995) and ‘The Prince and the Pauper’
(nominated for a BAFTA, 1997) which he also
produced. His first script for the cinema
was ‘Gosford Park’, which won him several
prizes, including the award from the Writers’
Guild of America, the New York Film Critics’
Circle Award, the ShoWest Award from
the US distributors and the Oscar for Best
Original Screenplay.
He worked on Mira Nair’s ‘Vanity Fair’, and,
since then, he has written the ‘book’ of the
stage musical of ‘Mary Poppins’ for Cameron
Mackintosh and Disney, the recipient of various
prizes and nominations, including the Variety
Club Award for Best Musical, which is currently
running on Broadway and in Los Angeles. His
debut as a film director, ‘Separate Lies’, which
he adapted himself from Nigel Balchin’s novel,
received critical acclaim in both America and
the UK, winning nominations from the London
Critics’ Circle as well as the award for the Best
Directorial Debut of 2005 from the National
Board of Review in New York.
He has just completed his second feature,
‘From Time to Time’, featuring a blind child and
adapted by him from the novel by L.M. Boston.
It had its première at the London Film Festival
2009 and won Best Picture at the Children’s
Film Festival in Chicago. His novel, ‘Snobs’,
2004, has been an international best seller. His
second novel, ‘Past Imperfect’, also a Sunday
Times bestseller was published in 2008. He
wrote the screenplay for ‘The Young Victoria’,
released in 2009. He was appointed a Deputy
Lieutenant of Dorset in 2008. He is married to
Emma, nee Kitchener, and they have one son,
Peregrine, a dachshund called Humbug and
a collie called Meg.

after a good bath so perfectly ready

20. Tedby Dame Ellen MacArthur
Iduna is named after Ellen’s yacht bought when
she was 17 years old and sailed single-handed
on a circumnavigation of Great Britain in 1995,
only two years later. Iduna wears a hand-knitted
purple beanie, and a white cotton vest. She
is ready for wet-weather sailing, with her purple
salopettes made from a bear-sized snippit
of the famous BT Team Ellen fabric, provided
by Musto, and emblazoned with a BT logo.
Iduna’s purple jacket is also applied with three
labels, ‘BT’, ‘BT Cisco: Working together’,
and ‘BT Team Ellen Ellen-Nick-Seb’. She
wears co-ordinated crocs and is signed.
Dame Ellen MacArthur first hit the headlines
in 2001 when she single-handedly raced
non-stop around the world in the Vendee
Globe when only 24 years old.
In February 2005 she set a new world record
for solo circumnavigation of the globe aboard
her 75ft trimaran of 71 days, 14 hours,
1 minute and 33 seconds. This was the
feat that gained her international acclaim.
On 8 February 2005, following her return
to England, it was announced that she
was to be made a Dame Commander of the
Order of the British Empire in recognition of
her achievement. It is believed that she is the
youngest ever recipient of this honour. Coming
immediately after the event being recognised,
rather than appearing in due course in the New
Year’s or Birthday honours lists, this recognition
was reminiscent of the knighthoods conferred
upon Francis Drake and Francis Chichester
upon arrival home after their respective circum-
navigations in 1580 and 1967. MacArthur was
also made an honorary Lieutenant Commander
of the Royal Naval Reserve on the same day.
She is now a partner in BT Team Ellen,
a 3-year sailing partnership announced in
September 2007, involving other world-class
sailors such as Sébastien Josse (FRA) and
Nick Moloney (AUS).
BT Team Ellen is dedicated to success
on the water across a number of disciplines
including the IMOCA Ocean Racing World
Championships and the Extreme 40 catamaran
series. Ellen also has a role off the water as
Global Ambassador for BT’s CSR programme.
In March 2008 in recognition of her achievements
she was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur
Knight by President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Aside from sailing, Ellen has a keen interest
in the issue of how we can protect the planet’s
natural resources and lead a more sustainable
life on land.
She is a founder of the Ellen MacArthur Trust,
set up in 2003, which takes young people
aged between 8-13 sailing to help them regain
their confidence on their way to recovery from
serious illness.

21. Tedby Betty Jackson
Beverley Bear sports a printed silk tunic
in a classic Betty Jackson design, gathered
at the waist with a black grosgrain ribbon.
The dramatic knitted headwear is embellished
with a tweed panel applied with black
lozenge-sequins and two paste brooches
in bright boiled-sweet colours. Beverley’s navy
knickers are based on similar examples featured
in a Betty Jackson collection! She is signed
by her creator.
Betty Jackson cites her look as being all about
‘textures and prints, soft volume and relaxed
glamour’. She has been one of the country’s
leading clothes designers for nearly thirty years.
During this time she has won numerous awards
for her designs including ‘Separates Designer
of the Year’, ‘British Designer of the Year’ and
‘Contemporary Designer of the Year’. She was
awarded the MBE in 1987 and CBE in 2007
for services to British Industry and Exports.
She launched Betty Jackson Ltd in 1981;
prior to this she was Chief Designer at Quorum.
She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College
of Art, a Fellow of Birmingham University, and
a Fellow of University of Central Lancashire.

23. We are an award winning charity
supporting blind and partially sighted
adults, young people and children.
We make special raised versions of pictures
that come to life when fingers feel them.
Sound recordings tell the pictures’ stories
while directing the fingertips across the raised
image, describing what is being touched, felt
and ‘seen’. These ‘touch and sound’ packs
are designed to be shared with sighted friends,
family and class mates. Themes include;
science, history, famous works of art, the natural
world, city tours, gardens, topical subjects, great
buildings and many well-loved childrens’ books.
These unique touch and sound packs are
distributed all across the country by our free
Postal Library. Living Paintings’ packs are
popular with adults and children alike, reflected
in a library membership that is rapidly approaching
10,000, including over 500 schools. Everything
we do is made possible through voluntary
donations of time, from some 150 volunteers,
and money.
About Living Paintings
The Story of Steiff
In1847, Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen
on the Brenz, as the third of four children. At 18
months old she was ill with a high fever following
which her legs were paralysed and it hurt her
to use her right arm. Three years later childhood
paralysis was diagnosed. The treatment didn’t
help and her parents grew disconsolate. What
could little Margarete expect from life now?
She would be dependant on the care of others
for life. But the cheerful Margarete fought for
her place in the world and was taken to school
in a hay cart by her siblings and neighbouring
children. In spite of the pain in her right hand,
Margarete also went to sewing school and
at the age of 17 she completed her training
as a seamstress.
In1874 Margarete’s father built her a work
room, a small tailors shop. With the first money
that she earned she bought her own sewing
machine. She could only move the fly wheel on
the right hand side with difficulty, and so without
further ado the machine was reversed.
In 1877 Margarete saw the sewing pattern
for a small stuffed elephant. Using this pattern
she made the elephant as a pin cushion, but
soon the little stuffed animals were very popular
as children’s toys. Just six years later over
5,000 elephants were sold and Margarete
was designing other stuffed animals too.
The first illustrated Steiff catalogue showed the
diversity of the range. In addition to elephants
there were monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels,
pigs, mice, dogs, cats, hares and giraffes.
In 1902 having joined the company in 1897,
Richard Steiff, Margarete’s creative favourite
nephew designed the ‘Bear 55PB’ bears, the
worldwide first stuffed bears with moveable
arms and legs.
Margarete herself remained sceptical, but
Richard was allowed to present his bears
at the Leipzig trade fair where an American
trader discovered the bears and ordered 3,000.
The bears began an unprecedented selling
success in the USA under the name of teddy
bear – named after the American president
Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt.
Margarete Steiff died in 1909 at the age of 61,
following a lung infection. This was a hard blow
for the Steiff family, friends and employees.
Margarete’s nephews took over the company
and to this day Steiff continues to produce
the famous ‘button in ear’ branded stuffed
toys always remembering Margarete’s motto
“for children, only the best is good enough!”.
