The new Whitney Museum of American Art opens on May 1st in New York City. The Renzo Piano-designed building is located between a new public park, the High Line, and the Hudson River, making it the cultural anchor of downtown NYC. Visitors can see over 21,000 works by around 3,000 artists, ranging from leading 20th century artists to contemporary American works, including pieces by Hopper, Pollock, Warhol, Sherman, O'Keeffe, Lichtenstein, de Kooning, Koons, Avery and Calder.

“After wandering the jungle-tangled
temples of Angkor Wat, I wanted to try
some staple local food, which can include
snakes, scorpions and other insects. I had
the deep-fried worms, which were salty,
crunchy and chewy. Something to tick off
the bucket list,” says Cairncross, the new
co-host for STA Travel and CliffCentral’s
#StartTheAdventureNow. We figured she’s
either the best person to give travel tips – or
the worst, if you’re not equally adventurous!

1 HANG WITH THE LOCALS
You’ll learn much more about the
place you’re visiting from them than from
a guidebook. Go where they go. Do what
they do. Ask for recommendations. Most
people can communicate in basic English –
throw in some body language and a hand
gesture or two, and you’re good
to go. Ultimately, people enrich
your travels a lot more than
sights do.

Also try learning how to greet and
say a few helpful phrases like “please”,
“thank you”, “yes”, “no” and “where’s
the cloakroom?”.
3 EAT THE LOCAL FOOD
Even if you don’t know what it is.
Eat food from local street vendors. Try
a bit of everything. Avoid touristy
restaurants and go where the locals
go – your pocket will love you for this. If the
menu’s handwritten in the local language,
you’re winning.
4 KEEP AN OPEN MIND
Remember what Clifton Fadiman said:
“A foreign country isn’t designed to make
you comfortable. It’s designed to make
its own people comfortable.” You’ll come
across customs and traditions that may be
very different from what you know, but
that’s the beauty of travel. Accept random
invitations. Remain flexible. Ask questions.
Be curious.
5 TAKE PHOTOS AND TAKE NOTES
How often will you trek Machu Picchu
or dive the Great Barrier Reef?
Chances are you’ll only do these
things once, so photos are the
perfect souvenirs to remember the
people and places you’ve visited.
But once you’ve snapped your
pics, put your camera away and
enjoy the experience. Much as
you believe the contrary, once you
get home, you won’t remember
that Indian restaurant with the best
dhal, the name of the band who
performed at the Spanish Steps or
that little town you got lost in. Jot it
