The leather industry in Walsall developed in the mid-19th century, it was a very prosperous trade in the area, providing many with highly skilled work. Walsall’s leather industry particularly focused on producing equestrian goods, the likes of which were always in high demand as much of industry was still powered by horses as a form of transportation. Walsall’s leather industry specialised in making saddles, even to this day many local leather works still make high quality saddles for the likes of the Royal family. One of the first saddleries, Jabez Cliff and Co, (now known as Barnsby Saddles) was established in 1793 by Jabez Cliff. The company quickly grew to become of the top five saddlery businesses in the world.

Born on July 18, 1950 in England. Richard Branson
struggled in school and dropped out at age 16 – a
decision that ultimately lead to the creation of Virgin
Records.

Born on July 18,1950 in England.
1967: Dropped out of school and started a
magazine called Student.
1969: Branson got idea of selling albums at
reduced rates through mails.
1972: Launched the record label Virgin
Records.
10. Branson dropped out at the
age of 16 to start a youth-
culture magazine called
Student. He hoped it would
be a forum for politically-
minded youth. He soon was
publishing essays and
interviews from such figures
as Jean- Paul, Alice Walker.
Despite such a roster of great
minds and literary figures, the
magazine never made money
and seemed bound to fail.
11. Virgin had been going strongly but it was
discovered Branson was dodging his tax payments.
He was arrested and jailed.
12. 1973: Branson was arrested and jailed for
dodging from tax payment.
1977: Singed Sex Pistols , and became the largest
indie label in the world.
1978-1983: Branson started over fifty different
companies encompassing everything from
filmmaking to air conditioner cleaning.
1984: Started Virgin Atlantic Airlines, the biggest
challenge.
1992: Sold the Virgin label to EMI for £500
million.
13. With fuel prices having doubled in the early `90s ,
terrorist attacks making people afraid to fly. Virgin
Atlantic was struggling to stay afloat. Branson was
forced to sell Virgin Records in order to sustain Virgin
Atlantic and pay off his creditors.
15. A 1998 attempt at an around the world
balloon flight by Branson ends in the Pacific
Ocean on 25 December 1998, which
received wide media coverage.
16. 2000: He was knighted by the Prince
of Wales in honor of his services to
entrepreneurship.
17. From this point on, Branson developed a
new approach to business called “branded
venture capital”. Through this method,
Branson licenses the Virgin name and logo
in exchange for a controlling interest in the
venture.
And till now Branson fixed his company’s
name to more than 400 different
companies.
