Valzaar-H is a combination medication consisting of
Valsartan an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and
Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. This medicine is used to
treat hypertension and lower blood pressure in patients
not adequately controlled with monotherapy as well as
initial therapy in patients likely to require multiple
medications to achieve their blood pressure goals.

Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets –
Brand Names
Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide
tablets are available as Diovan HCT,
Valzaar-H, Co-Diovan, Valfect-H, and
Valent-H.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient contained in
Valzaar-H tablets are Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide. Each tablet of
Valzaar-H contains 80 mg or 160 mg of
Valsartan in addition to 12.5 mg of
Hydrochlorothiazide.

Uses of Valzaar-H Tablets
Valzaar-H (Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide
Tablets) is used to treat high blood pressure.
Lowering high blood pressure helps to reduce the
risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events,
primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
It also helps to prevent kidney problems.
This drug contains two medications: Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide.
Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)
and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood
can flow more easily.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that causes you
to produce more urine, which helps your body get
rid of extra salt and water.

Valzaar-H Dosage
➢The tablets are to be administered once daily.
Valzaar-H may be administered with or without food.
The usual starting dose is Valzaar-H 160 mg / 12.5
mg once daily.
➢Titrate as required to a maximum dose of 320 mg /
25 mg
➢Can be used as add-on / switch therapy for patients
not adequately controlled on any of the components
(Valsartan or Hydrochlorothiazide)
➢May be substituted for titrated components
The dosage of Valzaar-H tablets (Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide) is given below:

Storage Instructions
Valzaar-H (Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets) have to be
stored at controlled room temperature
i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F)
with excursions permitted between 15°
to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Protect from moisture.
Keep this as well as all other medicines
away from children and pets.

Valsartan-H Tablets Warnings
Patients on Valzaar-H (Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets) therapy must be
observed for signs and symptoms of hypotension.
Correct volume depletion prior to initiation of
therapy.
Observe for signs of fluid or electrolyte imbalance.
Renal function and potassium has to be monitored
in susceptible patients.
Thiazide diuretics have been reported to cause
exacerbation or activation of systemic lupus
erythematosus. Lithium generally should not be
given with Thiazides.
Hydrochlorothiazide, a sulfonamide, could cause an
idiosyncratic reaction, resulting in acute transient
myopia and acute angle-closure glaucoma.

Valzaar-H Tablets
Contraindications
Valzaar-H is contraindicated in patients with a
hypersensitivity to Valsartan, Hydrochlorothiazide,
hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs
or any other component of this medication.
Do not administer this medicine to patients with
diabetes undergoing therapy with Aliskiren. This
medicine is also contraindicated inpatients with
Anuria.

Side Effects
➢The most common reasons for discontinuation of therapy with
Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets (Valzaar-H) were
headache and dizziness.
➢The only side effects that occurred in 2% or more of patients
treated with and at a higher incidence than placebo was
Nasopharyngiti
➢Other side effects include:
➢Cardiovascular: Palpitations and tachycardia
➢Ear and Labyrinth: Tinnitus and vertigo
➢Gastrointestinal: Dyspepsia, diarrhea, flatulence, dry mouth,
nausea, abdominal pain, abdominal pain upper, and vomiting.

➢General and Administration Site Conditions: Asthenia, chest
pain, fatigue, peripheral edema and pyrexia
➢Infections and Infestations: Bronchitis, bronchitis acute,
influenza, gastroenteritis, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract
infection, and urinary tract infection
➢Investigations: Blood urea increased
➢Musculoskeletal: Arthralgia, back pain, muscle cramps,
myalgia, and pain in extremity
➢Nervous System: Dizziness postural, paresthesia, and
somnolence
➢Psychiatric: Anxiety and insomnia
➢Renal and Urinary: Pollakiuria
➢Reproductive System: Erectile dysfunction

➢Respiratory, Thoracic and Mediastinal: Dyspnea, cough, nasal
congestion, pharyngolaryngeal pain, and sinus congestion
➢Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue: Hyperhidrosis and rash
➢Vascular: Hypotension
➢Other reported reactions seen less frequently in clinical trials
included abnormal vision, anaphylaxis, bronchospasm,
constipation, depression, dehydration, decreased libido, dysuria,
epistaxis, flushing, gout, increased appetite, muscle weakness,
pharyngitis, pruritus, sunburn, syncope, and viral infection.

Valzaar-H Overdose
Limited data are available related to Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide tablets (Valzaar-H) overdosage in
humans. The most likely symptoms of overdosage
would be hypotension and tachycardia; bradycardia
could occur from parasympathetic (vagal) stimulation.
Depressed level of consciousness, circulatory collapse
and shock have been reported.
The most common signs and symptoms seen in
patients are those caused by electrolyte depletion
(hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hyponatremia) and
dehydration resulting from excessive diuresis. If
digitalis has also been administered, hypokalemia may
accentuate cardiac arrhythmias.

Tablets Overdose
In case symptomatic hypotension occurs,
due to Valzaar-H (Valsartan and
Hydrochlorothiazide tablets) overdose,
supportive treatment should be started.
Valsartan is not removed from the plasma
by dialysis.
The degree to which Hydrochlorothiazide is
removed by hemodialysis has not been
established.

Tablets During Pregnancy
Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets (Valzaar-H) have
been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D .
When pregnancy is detected, stop taking Valzaar-H as soon as
possible.
Use of medicines that act on the renin-angiotensin system
during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces
fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity
and death.
It is not known whether Valsartan is excreted in human milk.
Hydrochlorothiazide is excreted in human breast milk. Since
many medicines are excreted into human milk and because of
the potential for adverse reactions in nursing infants from
Valzaar-H, a decision should be made whether to discontinue
nursing or discontinue the medicine, taking into account the
importance of the medication to the mother.
