Values come from the Latin word "valere" meaning to have power or vigor to fulfill an important need. Values define what is worthwhile and help guide decisions, goals, and behavior. A person's actions reveal their invisible value preferences and order of values, just as a prism reflects invisible color spectrums. Values have four key characteristics according to Max Scheler's theory of values - they are not pure essences but are objective, hierarchical, dependent on each other and the perceiver, and always come in pairs of positive and counter values.
