A vaccine works by introducing a weakened or dead version of a virus into the body. This causes the body to develop antibodies against the virus without causing illness. While vaccines exist for diseases like hepatitis and tuberculosis, there is currently no vaccine for COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. This coronavirus has caused a ongoing global pandemic since 2019 and spreads primarily through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing or talking within 6 feet of an infected person.
