The VMware vSphere server comfortably ran 24 VMs, 1.60 times as many as it ran without memory overcommitment, and delivered 1.57 times the total number of orders per minute. As we have emphasized throughout this report, this dramatic improvement occurred using the vSphere out-of-the-box settings and required no manual tuning. The RHV could not run more than 16 VMs.
vSphere employs multiple memory management techniques, including ballooning and compression to keep VMs running and highly available. In extreme cases when additional memory is necessary to keep VMs running, vSphere engages memory swapping as long as sufficient disk space is available to swap the overcommitted memory. This comes at a small cost to per-VM performance, but ensures that VMs can power on in almost any configuration of RAM allocation, as long as other server resources, such as CPU and storage, are not constrained. Note that admins can also enable Transparent Page Sharing to consolidate memory even further; because we wanted to represent the out-of-the-box experience with vSphere, we did not enable Transparent Page Sharing or use it in any of our tests.
In contrast, the RHV approach to managing memory overcommitment requires manual tuning to increase VM density. Moreover, unless an individual VM’s Maximum RAM is available on the host RHV cannot power on the VM. This means that even with Memory Optimization enabled, RHV cannot overcommit memory indefinitely.
While vSphere comfortably ran 24 VMs per server using out-of-the-box settings, RHV with a reasonable amount of adjusting settings maxed out at 16 VMs (see Figure 12). Based on these findings, you’d be able to run 72 VMs on only three VMware vSphere servers, more than the 64 VMs that four RHV servers would support.
The greater VM density that the vSphere approach to memory overcommitment makes possible has enormous potential to optimize your server usage and boost datacenter efficiency. Every server in your datacenter comes with a hefty price tag—for space, power and cooling, software licensing, and IT management. Electricity charge for operating data centers is reaching approximately 27% of total operation cost. For this reason, ARM servers have been getting more attention for future energy-efficient data centers and the performance of ARM processors keeps increasing (i.e., almost 3GHz). For efficiently utilizing ARM cores, ARM PVH has been introduced in Xen 4.3, and based on this, we have implemented live migration feature and evaluated on top of dualcore ARM board. More specifically, we choose multimedia streaming workload, measure the maximum concurrent clients, and calculate clients per watt (CPW) as the performance metric. From this, we have found out that even dualcore ARM processor (with virtualization) gives higher CPW (7 CPW) over x86 case (6 CPW). In addition we could reduce the energy consumption around 70% (4-to-1 consolidation for low-loaded servers) by using server consolidation.More Related Content

Netezza fundamentals for developers

User-space Network Processing
This document discusses optimizations for TCP/IP networking performance on multicore systems. It describes several inefficiencies in the Linux kernel TCP/IP stack related to shared resources between cores, broken data locality, and per-packet processing overhead. It then introduces mTCP, a user-level TCP/IP stack that addresses these issues through a thread model with pairwise threading, batch packet processing from I/O to applications, and a BSD-like socket API. mTCP achieves a 2.35x performance improvement over the kernel TCP/IP stack on a web server workload.

The VMware vSphere server comfortably ran 24 VMs, 1.60 times as many as it ran without memory overcommitment, and delivered 1.57 times the total number of orders per minute. As we have emphasized throughout this report, this dramatic improvement occurred using the vSphere out-of-the-box settings and required no manual tuning. The RHV could not run more than 16 VMs.
vSphere employs multiple memory management techniques, including ballooning and compression to keep VMs running and highly available. In extreme cases when additional memory is necessary to keep VMs running, vSphere engages memory swapping as long as sufficient disk space is available to swap the overcommitted memory. This comes at a small cost to per-VM performance, but ensures that VMs can power on in almost any configuration of RAM allocation, as long as other server resources, such as CPU and storage, are not constrained. Note that admins can also enable Transparent Page Sharing to consolidate memory even further; because we wanted to represent the out-of-the-box experience with vSphere, we did not enable Transparent Page Sharing or use it in any of our tests.
In contrast, the RHV approach to managing memory overcommitment requires manual tuning to increase VM density. Moreover, unless an individual VM’s Maximum RAM is available on the host RHV cannot power on the VM. This means that even with Memory Optimization enabled, RHV cannot overcommit memory indefinitely.
While vSphere comfortably ran 24 VMs per server using out-of-the-box settings, RHV with a reasonable amount of adjusting settings maxed out at 16 VMs (see Figure 12). Based on these findings, you’d be able to run 72 VMs on only three VMware vSphere servers, more than the 64 VMs that four RHV servers would support.
The greater VM density that the vSphere approach to memory overcommitment makes possible has enormous potential to optimize your server usage and boost datacenter efficiency. Every server in your datacenter comes with a hefty price tag—for space, power and cooling, software licensing, and IT management. Electricity charge for operating data centers is reaching approximately 27% of total operation cost. For this reason, ARM servers have been getting more attention for future energy-efficient data centers and the performance of ARM processors keeps increasing (i.e., almost 3GHz). For efficiently utilizing ARM cores, ARM PVH has been introduced in Xen 4.3, and based on this, we have implemented live migration feature and evaluated on top of dualcore ARM board. More specifically, we choose multimedia streaming workload, measure the maximum concurrent clients, and calculate clients per watt (CPW) as the performance metric. From this, we have found out that even dualcore ARM processor (with virtualization) gives higher CPW (7 CPW) over x86 case (6 CPW). In addition we could reduce the energy consumption around 70% (4-to-1 consolidation for low-loaded servers) by using server consolidation.Vectorization whitepaper
Vectorization is a new database technology that provides significant performance improvements through parallel processing. It fully utilizes multiple types of parallelism including symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), massively parallel processing (MPP) clusters, graphics processing units (GPUs), and vector processing instructions in Intel CPUs. Early adopters using fully vectorized databases are seeing dramatically lower costs and ability to handle new types of workloads and applications compared to traditional database technologies.

The report focuses on the key indicators of the monitored case and significantly reduces the time required to analyze collected information and identify bottlenecks.
It features the areas that influence performance of the application the most, whether it is individual execution or cumulative impact on the system due to high frequency of
use, and/or areas that create abnormally high load on the system as a whole.
System Alerts - Alerts section lists events with execution time or resource utilization exceeding predefined thresholds.
Resources Utilization - The CPU graph shows total general CPU utilization by Java Virtual Machine (JVM), as well as consumption by the most demanding individual threads within JVM, as the percentage of the total server's
CPU.
Resources Utilization - The Memory graph shows memory utilization by the Java Virtual Machine. Memory consumption is expected to grow until it is released by the garbage collector (GC). Up and down fluctuations are normal and indicate that the system is healthy. However, behavior when memory drops to increasingly higher level and oscillations grow shorter, while top line lingers around maximal available memory, may indicate memory leak in the system, or simply higher demand that JVM can
provide. In such case, the execution of the application is constrained by total available memory and JVM might eventually crash.
User Experience - Additional factors that may impact user experience are network latency and browser-side processing time. The execution time shown on the graph represents minimum user wait time which could be
achieved when user has adequately equipped workstation and negligible network delays.
Heavy Methods - The section lists twenty methods with the longest execution time, along with the details pinpointing the reasons.
For each of the listed in the table methods, report offers additional supporting information about repeatedly executed sub-methods, methods with highest net execution time, methods causing the highest CPU utilization, total time spent on database queries and the Heaviest SQL queries.
Heavy Methods by Total Net - The section lists the methods with longest total net time, which are directly responsible for the duration of the execution.
Net time is calculated as full duration time minus full duration time of methods that are called directly from the method in question. The list could contain low-level methods, including I/O methods and other
event waits.
All Queries Totals - The section highlights portion of the overall execution time that was spend on database queries.
The data could be one of the quick indicators on whether the performance issues are database related.
Heavy Queries by Total Duration - While one execution of the query doesn't take long time to execute, the queries listed in this section were executed enough times to account for the significant total execution time.

Openstack nova
Nova compute and controller services provide virtual machines and coordinate nova services in OpenStack. Nova compute runs on each node and interacts with the hypervisor like KVM to launch VMs. The nova controller runs most nova services including the scheduler, which dispatches VM requests to nodes based on filters. Key components include the nova API, compute, and conductor services. Compute resources must be designed considering the number of processors, memory allocation, storage, resource pools, and over-commit ratios to optimize VM deployment in OpenStack.
Cloud datacenters
The document describes an approach called ecoCloud for efficiently consolidating virtual machines (VMs) across physical servers in cloud data centers to reduce power consumption. EcoCloud uses probabilistic procedures driven by local information to dynamically assign and migrate VMs, allowing servers to autonomously increase utilization and consolidate workload over time. The goal is to maximize the number of servers switched off or in low-power modes through continuous optimization of VM placement in response to changing resource demands.

- 2. • Overview Performance Charts: The overview performance charts display the most common metrics for an object in the inventory. Charts can be used to monitor and troubleshoot performance problems for Clusters, Data centers, Datastore and Datastore Clusters, hosts, Resource Pools, vApps, and Virtual Machines, lets take hosts charts for example, The hosts charts contain information about CPU, disk, memory, network, and storage usage for hosts. The help topic for each chart contains information about the data counters displayed in that chart. The counters available are determined by the collection level set for vCenter Server.
- 3. The CPU (%) chart displays CPU usage for the host: A short spike in CPU usage indicates that are making the best use of the host resources. However, if the value is constantly high, the host is probably lacking the CPU required to meet the demand. A high CPU usage value can lead to increased ready time and processor queuing of the virtual machines on the host.
- 4. The memory (mbps) chart displays the swap in and swap out rates for a host: a consistently high memory usage value (94% or greater) indicates the host does not have the memory resources required to meet the demand.
- 5. The memory (%) chart displays host memory usage: to ensure best performance, the host memory must be large enough to accommodate the active memory of the virtual machines. The active memory can be smaller than the virtual machine memory size. It allows you to over- provision memory, but still ensures that the virtual machine active memory is smaller than the host memory.
