ACONEX TECHNICAL CHALLENGE – MY PROPOSAL OF SOLUTION
As startingpointformy UX designIhave made some assumptionbasedon the conversationsI’ve
had withConorLydon.Thisis my interpretation of the taskandI wouldbe happyto go throughit
overthe phone to make itevenmore clear.Below I’ve explainedmyprocessof workingand
hopefullyitwill giveyouabetterunderstandingof how I operate and can contribute toyour
businessinanoptimal way.
A. BACKGROUNDAND PROCESS
The method:Goldencircle
I like SimonSinecsGoldenCircle model.It’s simple,yetbutapowerful wayto get a clearoverview of
a businesspromise totheirtargetaudience.(reference http://www.goldencircle.com.au/ ) Below I
will gothroughthe stepsof the method:
Step 1: What?
Aconex isthe numberone cloudplatformconnectingteamsonthe world’slargestconstructionand
engineeringprojects.
Step 2: How?
In the bestworld, we needtocombine peopleandmachines/computerstogetthe verybestoutput
fromeverypersoninthe organisation.We thereforeneedtoaligntheminacleverand innovative
way. Thiswill be done bycombiningoursmart tool andmake ourworkersevenbetterandmore
effectiveof theirjob.
Step 3: Why?
Time isprecious.We needtosave time foreveryone workinginthe organisation.
Understandingofthe UX task
If this wouldhave beena “real”UX assignmentIwouldcommence the projectbycollectingdata,do
qualitative interviewswithusersandobserve behaviours.Thisisthe mostcrucial part of the UX
processand the entire UX outputwill be builtuponthe learnings fromthe insightphase.
But I will insteadmake some assumptions buildthe case frommypreviousexperience.
Phase 1: Identifythe user
The user forthe tool are construction workersand constructionProjectManagers.It’sa very
heterogeneousgroupof peopleinaspectsof age,educationandethnicandcultural background. The
usersare male skewed.The users are united inaprofessional prideof theirwork combinedwith
highusage of smartphones.
Phase 2. Identifythe users’ needs
People withhighusage of mobilephoneshave high expectationof the contentandthe experience.
The bestapp setsthe standard and theyexpectnothingless. (Compare Facebook, Instagram,Google
etc.) The same rule is applicable onthe laptopexperience. Because of thiswe needtomake sure we
can give the same experience toourusersinour tool.A simple andclear tool will make ouraudience
more efficientof theirdaily jobandtheywill save time.
Phase 3. My solution
Our promise toour usersisthat we save themtime (andmake thembetterat theirjob).To
communicate thatas an experience we needtodeliver onthatpromise bybeingrespectfulof their
time inas many wayas we can think of and in,ineveryinteraction:
Thisis whatwe needto do:
 Mirror the company’s values
Update the overall interfacestomake itfeel likeacontemporarymodern, smartusercentric
company.Makesusersbelieve inourpromise.
 Less ismore
Make interactionmore intuitive,boththe inputandpresentationof data.Curate accurate
data and showonly relevantoptions forthe specificuserandoccasion.Lessis more.
 Connectthe team
Connectwithexpertsandotherteammembersdirectinthe appfor secondopinions,best
practice etc.
 Personalizedprofile page
Empowerthe userby givinghis/herownspace inthe app, where we canstart promoting
positive behaviourthroughgamificationtactics.
By doingchanges I believe the overall userexperience will improve drastically.
B. SOLUTIONS TO THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGES
Movingintothe technical challenges;Manyof the tasksinyour assignmentare linked together.I
have therefore combinedsome of the tasks.
Task 1. Design betterfilteringofFieldissues: Combinedtask 1 + 4
I have combinedthe solution of tasknumber1and 4 since theybelongtogether.Ilike totake a
holisticapproach,solve asmanyissuesaspossible atthe same time.Iwill make the experience for
the usermore stringent. Ontasknumber5 I have explainedhow Iwouldtestthe changes.
The task:”Redesign this screen to allowfor moreflexible filtering.” and ”Redesign the issuelisting to
allow clear user interactionsforviewing,editing,selecting and bulkupdating..”
The userswant to accessthe data in otherways,for example;Findingasingle issue byissue number,
Findingcapturedissueswithinadate range,Findcapturedissuesonaspecificdate,Finddue issues
withinacustom date range,Findingissuesinatype of area – e.g.all openissuesinBathrooms,Find
issueswithaparticulardescription.e.g.“holeinwall”
As I reasonedinthe sectionA:The process,it’simportantthatthe entire lookandfeel isuptodate if
youwant to be perceived asa modernandforefront company,acompany youcan trustwithmy
problems. The solutionforthe combinedtaskof 1 and 4 isto do a considerable big redesignthat
bettercan handle the challengesof managing avastamount of issues. A goodexample of where we
can take inspirationfrom ishowGoogle’sUX are operating,e.g. Google Drive and Google Photo.
Theyhave a similarchallenge with vastamountof data that userneedstofindandmanage,and it’s
crucial for themto have a clear,intuitive andsolid interface.
My recommendationof howtosolve the challengewith the amountof datais to simple implement
a search functionandcombine the searchfilterwiththe tags. Ihave takeninspirationfromGoogle.

Task 2. Adding ‘tags’ to issues - Combinewithtask 3
Howwould you validatethe suitability of tagsto handlethis userrequirement?
I bothlove and hate tags. It’s a beautiful waytosolve the problemof findingwhatyouare looking
for whenyousearchingfora batch of informationthathave a commondenominator. Whentagging,
youneedto geteverythingright.If yougetthe tag wrong, youriskendinguplosingissuesincyber
space. If you don’thave a clear structure of taggingyou mightenduphaving15 tags of the same
issue.
To solve the challenge the wayforwardisnotto use tags. Instead,the solutionis therefore to
connecteveryissue we acouple of setissuestochoose from.Insteadof usingtags I recommenda
drop downmenuthatare customto each issue.One example is paintingthathasitsown dropdown
menuetc.
Task 3. Mobile applicationstructure/navigation for a newfeature – Combine withtask 2
My recommendation istocombine the designof tasknumber2and 3, reasonisthe same as in task
1: I like totake a holisticapproach,solve asmanyissuesaspossible atthe same time.Iwill make the
experience forthe usermore stringent.
The challenge istofita checklistfeatureintothe currentdesign. Whengoingthroughwhatneedsto
be done, ithas become clearthat the overall designis keytosolve all challengeswithinthe app.The
currentUI isnot a good foundationtobuilduponforthe future. The developmentof the webis
evolvingsoquicklyandif the standard andexperience of ourappis lowerthanthe usershigh
expectation we needtochange itand make sure we are followingthe standardof the leaders(such
as Google andFacebook) Businessapp shouldn’tbe theirownuniverse.Itneedstohave the same
standardas the best.

These featuresneedstobe developedwithin the app:
- NewClearStructure
- NewBottomNavigation
- Checklistfunction
- BlueprintMapof The ConstructionSite
- User Space
- In AppCommunication
I recommend anewstructure of the Fieldappbecause abigpart of the value thatyou give tothe
user,apart fromthe actual functionalityof the service,isthe lookandfeel.
My recommendationis tofocusonthe twomainthingsthat matterto the user (andthe business):
1. RecordingIssues
2. To do list

Task 5. Feature Completion
Howdo you knowif thefeatureis completeand successful?
In every project, youneedtohave a clearview of the goal of the redesign.The change itself isjusta
wayof makingyourapp more UX friendly,butisneverthe endgoal andKPI. By adjustingyourapp
youwill change the behaviourof howthe usersare utilising it.
You needtohave setgoals of what youwantto achieve forthe entire project.If you know whatset
KPI’sthe app will have we will ensure thatthe appwill achievesuccess.
KPI’scan alwaysbe adjusted, butit’scrucial fora projectto have clearKPI’s.If not, it’simpossible to
knowif youhave achieveda successful result.Iwouldrecommendtogetinputfromreal users that
are usingthe app,makingsure it’sworkinginreal life.We will thenmake sure it works forthe
people thatwill use itintheirdailylife.

UX Strategy

Fredrik Torstensson fredrik.t.torstensson@gmail.com Mobile: 0401-424 461 Senior UXdesigner ACONEX TECHNICAL CHALLENGE – MY PROPOSAL OF SOLUTION As startingpointformy UX designIhave made some assumptionbasedon the conversationsI’ve had withConorLydon.Thisis my interpretation of the taskandI wouldbe happyto go throughit overthe phone to make itevenmore clear.Below I’ve explainedmyprocessof workingand hopefullyitwill giveyouabetterunderstandingof how I operate and can contribute toyour businessinanoptimal way. A. BACKGROUNDAND PROCESS The method:Goldencircle I like SimonSinecsGoldenCircle model.It’s simple,yetbutapowerful wayto get a clearoverview of a businesspromise totheirtargetaudience.(reference http://www.goldencircle.com.au/ ) Below I will gothroughthe stepsof the method: Step 1: What? Aconex isthe numberone cloudplatformconnectingteamsonthe world’slargestconstructionand engineeringprojects. Step 2: How? In the bestworld, we needtocombine peopleandmachines/computerstogetthe verybestoutput fromeverypersoninthe organisation.We thereforeneedtoaligntheminacleverand innovative way. Thiswill be done bycombiningoursmart tool andmake ourworkersevenbetterandmore effectiveof theirjob. Step 3: Why? Time isprecious.We needtosave time foreveryone workinginthe organisation. Understandingofthe UX task If this wouldhave beena “real”UX assignmentIwouldcommence the projectbycollectingdata,do qualitative interviewswithusersandobserve behaviours.Thisisthe mostcrucial part of the UX processand the entire UX outputwill be builtuponthe learnings fromthe insightphase. But I will insteadmake some assumptions buildthe case frommypreviousexperience. Phase 1: Identifythe user The user forthe tool are construction workersand constructionProjectManagers.It’sa very heterogeneousgroupof peopleinaspectsof age,educationandethnicandcultural background. The usersare male skewed.The users are united inaprofessional prideof theirwork combinedwith highusage of smartphones. Phase 2. Identifythe users’ needs People withhighusage of mobilephoneshave high expectationof the contentandthe experience. The bestapp setsthe standard and theyexpectnothingless. (Compare Facebook, Instagram,Google etc.) The same rule is applicable onthe laptopexperience. Because of thiswe needtomake sure we can give the same experience toourusersinour tool.A simple andclear tool will make ouraudience more efficientof theirdaily jobandtheywill save time.

My solution Our promise toour usersisthat we save themtime (andmake thembetterat theirjob).To communicate thatas an experience we needtodeliver onthatpromise bybeingrespectfulof their time inas many wayas we can think of and in,ineveryinteraction: Thisis whatwe needto do:  Mirror the company’s values Update the overall interfacestomake itfeel likeacontemporarymodern, smartusercentric company.Makesusersbelieve inourpromise.  Less ismore Make interactionmore intuitive,boththe inputandpresentationof data.Curate accurate data and showonly relevantoptions forthe specificuserandoccasion.Lessis more.  Connectthe team Connectwithexpertsandotherteammembersdirectinthe appfor secondopinions,best practice etc.  Personalizedprofile page Empowerthe userby givinghis/herownspace inthe app, where we canstart promoting positive behaviourthroughgamificationtactics. By doingchanges I believe the overall userexperience will improve drastically. B. SOLUTIONS TO THE TECHNICAL CHALLENGES Movingintothe technical challenges;Manyof the tasksinyour assignmentare linked together.I have therefore combinedsome of the tasks. Task 1. Design betterfilteringofFieldissues: Combinedtask 1 + 4 I have combinedthe solution of tasknumber1and 4 since theybelongtogether.Ilike totake a holisticapproach,solve asmanyissuesaspossible atthe same time.Iwill make the experience for the usermore stringent. Ontasknumber5 I have explainedhow Iwouldtestthe changes. The task:”Redesign this screen to allowfor moreflexible filtering.” and ”Redesign the issuelisting to allow clear user interactionsforviewing,editing,selecting and bulkupdating..” The userswant to accessthe data in otherways,for example;Findingasingle issue byissue number, Findingcapturedissueswithinadate range,Findcapturedissuesonaspecificdate,Finddue issues withinacustom date range,Findingissuesinatype of area – e.g.all openissuesinBathrooms,Find issueswithaparticulardescription.e.g.“holeinwall” As I reasonedinthe sectionA:The process,it’simportantthatthe entire lookandfeel isuptodate if youwant to be perceived asa modernandforefront company,acompany youcan trustwithmy problems. The solutionforthe combinedtaskof 1 and 4 isto do a considerable big redesignthat bettercan handle the challengesof managing avastamount of issues. A goodexample of where we can take inspirationfrom ishowGoogle’sUX are operating,e.g. Google Drive and Google Photo. Theyhave a similarchallenge with vastamountof data that userneedstofindandmanage,and it’s crucial for themto have a clear,intuitive andsolid interface. My recommendationof howtosolve the challengewith the amountof datais to simple implement a search functionandcombine the searchfilterwiththe tags. Ihave takeninspirationfromGoogle.
  • 3. See sketch number1. Task 2. Adding ‘tags’ to issues - Combinewithtask 3 Howwould you validatethe suitability of tagsto handlethis userrequirement? I bothlove and hate tags. It’s a beautiful waytosolve the problemof findingwhatyouare looking for whenyousearchingfora batch of informationthathave a commondenominator. Whentagging, youneedto geteverythingright.If yougetthe tag wrong, youriskendinguplosingissuesincyber space. If you don’thave a clear structure of taggingyou mightenduphaving15 tags of the same issue. To solve the challenge the wayforwardisnotto use tags. Instead,the solutionis therefore to connecteveryissue we acouple of setissuestochoose from.Insteadof usingtags I recommenda drop downmenuthatare customto each issue.One example is paintingthathasitsown dropdown menuetc. Task 3. Mobile applicationstructure/navigation for a newfeature – Combine withtask 2 My recommendation istocombine the designof tasknumber2and 3, reasonisthe same as in task 1: I like totake a holisticapproach,solve asmanyissuesaspossible atthe same time.Iwill make the experience forthe usermore stringent. The challenge istofita checklistfeatureintothe currentdesign. Whengoingthroughwhatneedsto be done, ithas become clearthat the overall designis keytosolve all challengeswithinthe app.The currentUI isnot a good foundationtobuilduponforthe future. The developmentof the webis evolvingsoquicklyandif the standard andexperience of ourappis lowerthanthe usershigh expectation we needtochange itand make sure we are followingthe standardof the leaders(such as Google andFacebook) Businessapp shouldn’tbe theirownuniverse.Itneedstohave the same standardas the best. Redesignof app– Key features These featuresneedstobe developedwithin the app: - NewClearStructure - NewBottomNavigation - Checklistfunction - BlueprintMapof The ConstructionSite - User Space - In AppCommunication I recommend anewstructure of the Fieldappbecause abigpart of the value thatyou give tothe user,apart fromthe actual functionalityof the service,isthe lookandfeel. My recommendationis tofocusonthe twomainthingsthat matterto the user (andthe business): 1. RecordingIssues 2. In every project, youneedtohave a clearview of the goal of the redesign.The change itself isjusta wayof makingyourapp more UX friendly,butisneverthe endgoal andKPI. By adjustingyourapp youwill change the behaviourof howthe usersare utilising it. You needtohave setgoals of what youwantto achieve forthe entire project.If you know whatset KPI’sthe app will have we will ensure thatthe appwill achievesuccess. KPI’scan alwaysbe adjusted, butit’scrucial fora projectto have clearKPI’s.If not, it’simpossible to knowif youhave achieveda successful result.Iwouldrecommendtogetinputfromreal users that are usingthe app,makingsure it’sworkinginreal life.We will thenmake sure it works forthe people thatwill use itintheirdailylife.
