Title: How Do You Know if Your Project Is Any Good?
Presented at All Things Open 2022
Presented by Avi Press & Emily Omier
Abstract: Are you, like many maintainers, struggling to get good data about who is actually using your project, how they are using it and why they downloaded it in the first place? Do you know how many users the project has, and whether those users even like it? Do you know what other technologies they use, what kinds of applications or workloads they use your project for or even what exactly they like (or dislike) about your project? In this talk, Avi Press will discuss ways to get quantitative data to get insights into who is using your project and what they are doing with it, and Emily Omier will talk about how to gather qualitative data on your project’s value and triggers that inspired adoption. Together, they’ll talk about how to use these two types of data to make better decisions about your outreach efforts, project roadmap and ultimate goals for the project.

Customer development is critical for the success for any new product development initiative. But what if your new initiative solves a problem in a developing country? Can you really solve the problems on the ground without spending significant time living in the country where the product will be used? In this talk, we use the Playpump case study to understand why the only real way to build a sustainable venture that solves problems in developing countries is to do primary market research on the ground. We explore a few research techniques you can engage in, including interviews, observation and immersion. Identifying Personas With Agile Research - Dawn of the Data Age Lecture SeriesLuciano Pesci, PhD
How well do you know your customer? The typical response is "pretty well" but this needs an asterisk because it's always insight about the average and not the individual customer. Yet there's a huge difference between the personal experience of any one customer and the average. Thankfully, personas are a framework that can help you bridge the divide and understand individual customers. But building persons requires good data, especially about behavioral choice motivators. With the right agile research sprint and a little bit of applied economics, you can collect this information and build personas with predictable (positive) impact.
This Lecture Will:
-TEACH THE BENEFITS OF USING PERSONAS.
-SHOW PERSONA TEMPLATES & THEIR DATA.
-EXPLAIN HOW TO CREATE BEHAVIORAL PERSONAS.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
4. First draft: It’s OK to guess
● Your internal resources
○ Customer support
○ Technical support
○ Product managers
○ Other marketing & UX research
● Your first guess
○ Job vs. behavioral personas
○ How many personas make sense
○ How much detail do I need
● Strategy gut check
○ What is your company’s strategy, and who is your C-Level going after
● What are your best first draft experiences?
6. Further validation: It’s not just a pile of BS
● Customer interviews & focus groups are super helpful
● Email surveys are a good substitute
● Personal connections matter too!
● Dig down as quickly as possible to the root problems
○ Ultimately, ask about the tasks they are trying to accomplish and the problems they encounter
along the way
○ How long do they allocate to accomplish said tasks
● What are the ”other things” they deal with
○ What external struggles to they experience
○ How often are they interrupted
● What are your biggest 180 or revelation?
8. Best ways to use your personas
● Wireframes!
○ Every page is made up of components, and you can add suggested personas for different pages
○ Add personas to every components in your library to help with “everyone” pages
● Marketing “stuff”
○ Email segments
○ Social media segments
● Design Decisions
○ Based on strategy, one persona may mean more than another, so components may move up &
down the screen and/or size based on that
