5. WHAT IS A CRYPTOCURRENCY?
• A digital currency that only exists electronically
• It’s controlled by a decentralized or peer-to-peer (P2P) network
• There is no organization that controls it
• To avoid double-spending, it uses cryptography and a public, digital
ledger known as a blockchain
• Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 as open-source
software by Satoshi Nakamoto
6. HOW DOES BITCOIN USE
BLOCKCHAIN?
• Every Bitcoin transaction is
recorded on a blockchain.
• A Blockchain is a distributed
database that’s shared by
thousands of computers
• Blockchains can be used to store all
kinds of data, not just digital
currency.
7. WHAT ARE MINERS DOING?
• Miners are responsible for updating the blockchain with new
transactions.
• Every 10 minutes, transactions are grouped into “blocks” which can
then be mined and added to the blockchain, forming a chain of
blocks.
• Miners are rewarded with newly created Bitcoin for every block they
successfully mine

9. MAJOR CRYPTOCURRENCIES
• Bitcoin - first crypto with 10 minute blocks. Largest market cap at
$190 billion.
• Litecoin - fork of Bitcoin, 2.5 minute blocks instead
• Ethereum - distributed computing platform with smart contracts.
Computations are paid with Ether.
• IOTA - micropayment for IoT devices using DAG instead of
blockchain. Cheaper fees and more scalable
• Monero - transactions on the public ledger are completely
private
10. CRYPTO WALLETS
• Desktop Core Wallet: Runs a full client and node. Takes up a lot of space
and memory. Bitcoin Core takes up over 100 GB.
• Online Wallet: Keys are held by a third party with their own node. Easy to
setup but the most insecure.
• Paper Wallet: Keys are printed on a piece of paper and can only be
accessed by copying the key into wallet software
• Hardware Wallet: Keys are held on a dedicated device with a PIN code. The
device can be accessed through a USB to make transactions.
11. HOW TO BUY CRYPTO
• Online Exchange- websites that allow you to deposit dollars with credit
card or bank account to trade for Bitcoin. E.g. Coinbase, Gemini
• P2P Marketplace- websites that enable users to trade directly either
online or in person with cash. E.g. LocalBitcoins, Paxful
• Crypto ATMs - ATMs that allow you to deposit cash for Bitcoin and vice
versa
• Altcoin Exchanges - Exchanges that only allow only cryptocurrency to be
traded. No fiat deposits. E.g. Shapeshift, Poloniex
• KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TRADES - use Cointracking.info for tax purposes
12. CURRENT USE CASES
• Darknet Marketplaces
• Global Remittances
• Discount Shopping
• Donations
• Safe-haven asset
• Initial Coin Offerings (ICO)
