Did you know that design methods can be used to social problems, not just to create beautiful campaign and functional products? Slide through what we in InWithForward have learned in blending design methods and social science in the social context, with people in their homes, staff workers in social service and government agencies.
This slide deck also touched on designing social welfare for a context like Indonesia. The question that we ask ourselves is: how would it look like if we bring this method to a developing country like Indonesia? Is it ready for a social welfare system that looks more like a trampoline and less like a safety net.

Lauren Currie: The science of doing good thingswebdagene
In a world of broken systems, intractable problems and too little time, our obvious choice is to just keep going. Lauren Currie spells out why, when it comes to doing good, it’s time to raise our game.

Feed Forward Stories: connecting research, policy and practice
The boy who got lost in debts and piles of papers while lacking a postal address to start his debt cancellation procedure, and thus his new life. The policy maker who has good connections but lacks the numbers and stories to take grounded action. The youth professional who bounces back and forth between providing what the boy needs, and what the bureaucratic rules and laws of civic administrator offices ask. The academic who wants to provide meaningful insights but is stuck with an academic ‘publish or perish’ system. All of these people live in one city, but their stories are disconnected. However they all want the same: better lives for citizens. Feed Forward Stories is an inclusive research methodology that connects stories of citizens and stories of people operating in systems (ie. schools, social and public services, municipality) to start new actions. In this talk Marlieke Kieboom (Kennisland) introduces the vision, the work principles and the methodology behind Feed Forward Stories.

Social entrepreneurs & enterprises: Taking Responsible Steps Towards Sustaina...Collective Responsibility
In this presentation, give on November 28 to a group of NYU students in Shanghai, I speak about several topics to help frame sustainability and the role of social entrepreneurs in bringing solutions to the market
throughout the presentation, I worked to show my own history, highlight the importance of having a tangible relationship to the issue, and the importance of build a platform built on knowledge and real solutions.
How can an industry that places empathy at the core of its practice ignore the big problems facing South Africa and the continent? In a rapidly changing design landscape will UX designers even be relevant in the future? UX designers exist at a unique interdisciplinary juncture and it gives us the opportunity to create inspiring responses to these questions. With the maturity of design thinking, social innovation, and lean startup, we are uniquely placed to re-apply our skills to find new relevance and greater impact in doing work that matters. But taking action is not easy, even if it can be known what is to be done. In this talk David will explore the new mindsets, skills and attitudes UX designers need to adopt to shift from merely doing design to becoming design activists.
Social Capital is an important outcome of any design process. Designers should seek more from it. In the age of smart devices and systems, we seem to forget about the social capital, for our notion of being 'social' itself has changed. In the context of Social Enterprise, we have to rely on it a lot more, for working in the development sector comes with its own set of challenges.
These are the slides from my today's talk at Adobe India (Noida) office. 17th August 2016.

Design as Social Capital.
All good design leads to Social Capital. It is at the core of everything we design. Some call that process the user-centred design and some as human-centred design. The notion of social capital relies on building solutions that are based on Reciprocity, Trust and Cooperation.
A lot of the population in India still does not have access to the basic amenities in life, and when we talk of building solutions that are going to be useful in these contexts, the Social Capital is something that one cannot ignore.
When working in the development sector, towards creating solutions that have high impact and are long lasting, one should seek help from Social Capital.
These are the Slides from my talk at the UX India 2016 conference, where I put out an open call to the UX community to leverage the notion of Social Capital and build highly impacting solutions.

With great power comes great responsibility: A quest to consciously do good.Ash Donaldson
As designers, we all want to change the world and we have lots of power to do so. We design the digital, physical and organisational environments and even inform policy that shapes peoples’ behaviours. So how can we make sure what we’re doing is right?
Sure we can knock back work in gambling or other areas that clearly have a negative impact on both individuals and society as a whole, but there are areas where this is not such a cut and dry argument. There are times where our design input could be used for positive or negative purposes, or simply have unintended consequences.
In this presentation, I shared our bumpy journey of first realising the need for, then creating our own ethical frameworks and decision making tools. These will help us answer sticky questions when they arise, stay true to our humanistic values and feel confident in the knowledge that we’re consciously working to make the world a better place.
On the last slide you'll find a call to action to join us in creating a design ethics community of practice.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
