- 5. Introduction and objective of our coaching programme: • To coach young Chinese university students to become future international business professionals by helping them to understand essential knowledge of the West and skills related to job applications.
- 6. Why do Chinese students in the UK have difficulty passing interviews in the West? 1) Lack of understanding of the West (KNOWLEDGE) – British/Western Values, Western company values, company structures, business functions, Western culture, Western current affairs, global economic issues, corporate life and others. 2) Lack of understanding of the job application process (SKILLS) – Resume, cover letter, interviews, Assessment Centres, group work, presentation, business English, Western social etiquette and others.

What are Graduate Schemes in International Companies? • A job – paying the market salary (usually around £30,000 per year) • A unique opportunity to be trained while working – probably the most important training of your career • Usually results in a professional qualification often recognised internationally.

What are Graduate Schemes in International Companies? • The foundation for a fast track career into senior management • Exposure to global ideas and methods, an opportunity to work alongside industry experts • Open for applications all year round but principally in the period September to December • Often independent of degree major . . . . . but competitive

What are Internships in International Companies? • Working in a company usually for 2 to 8 weeks during summer vacation (other times are possible!) • Opportunity to try out a sector/company • Understanding how international companies operate • Opportunity to develop “competencies” and strengthen your CV • Often results in a graduate scheme job! . . . . . but also competitive

- 15. Research opportunities • Go and meet people and ask questions • Ask for help from companies, university, tutors and advisers • Use Google to ask questions • Look at company web pages • Find press releases and comments in media
- 16. Voluntary work – important to do • Inside your University – (Union, CSSA etc) • Outside your University • Many different opportunities • Chance to improve your English • Available all the year round • “Timebank” a great source of ideas

Self-help • Research industries, companies and vacancies • Research history and recent developments • Research related matters • Prepare your questions – focus on industry, company and positions • Draft your email with the right tone and substance • Wear suitable clothes – observe others • Learn social etiquette skills – dining skills, party skills

Some Excuses for Not Trying! • They prefer local British – Look at the streets of London/Birmingham/ Manchester! • My English isn’t good enough – don’t need perfect English to get a job (but good English helps confidence) • Only a few companies give work visas – Last time I checked, number of registered companies is 29,294 (Sept 2017) • Brexit, terrorism etc

Common Misconceptions • “My friend who graduated from Oxford didn’t get a job here, he told me that I have no chance.” • “My university is not a 985 or 211 university and not a target university, Investment banks and Big 4 accountancy firms will not like it.” • “I am studying Engineering/Media, but I want to work in a financial company, they prefer to have someone who comes from a financial Background.” • “I need a visa, I have heard that the Home Office has tightened the rules to prevent us from working here.” • “I do not have relevant exemptions from accounting exams, I do not have the CFA qualification; other candidates are better than me.” • “I graduated with an undergraduate degree in China, not from the UK, so I am disadvantaged.”
