The main setting of my music video was carnival. By choosing this
setting, it not only used but develops the forms and conventions of my
genre due to the large scale of carnival shown with my video. I chose to
include such a vast amount to challenge the conventions as most videos
only show brief clips from carnival or an individual within a carnival
costume to reinforce the fact that they are representing the Soca genre
and trying to incorporate the conventions of the genre. I done this to
allow my audience to feel as though they are escaping to carnival
themselves whilst watching the video. Within my media product, I used
Ladbroke Grove as my main location. I chose to do this in order for me
to develop an idea from a real media product after watching “Triniboi
Joocie – dutty mas”. This is as he is also trying to convey the same
denotations of the video by expressing the enjoyment of carnival.
Furthering from this, I went on to develop the forms and conventions of
the genre I am representing by not only using Ladbroke Grove as a
location, but using it whilst carnival is actually being held. This has also
been done by other artists such as Machel Montano in order to cultivate
the narrative. This location is one that is familiar to my audiences
knowledge and therefore allows them to feel that they are present.
Throughout my music video I have used many special
effects. However, my main one was the use of split
screens. I have done this to both use and challenge the
forms and conventions of my genre. I have chosen to use
it as many artists within Soca use split screens to denote
them enjoying themselves at the different events within
the season, this is also the reason why I used it. On the
other hand, I was able to challenge the use of split screens
by using flashing split screens within my video as when
dong my research I did not see any other artist which done
this. I manipulated the use of split screens in this way to
allow my audience to visualise the misconceptions of the
ideologies of Soca. This is as, through my audience
feedback I was able to analyse that many people were not
enticed to the genre due to the misconceptions of females
promiscuously flaunting bodies and dancing risqué.
My actress is not introduced right at the beginning
of the music video as I have used text to
introduce her, as well as the song title.
Therefore, This challenges real media products
and diverts from the stereotypical views as
usually, the artist is the first person that the
viewer will see. I have chosen to do this so that
the theme of carnival and enjoyment is able to be
expressed completely before the artist appears.
This is to change the mood of my audience
before they get to the climax of my music video.
My main choice of costumes throughout my music video is the use
of oiled JabJab men and brightly coloured carnival costumes
which denote the theme of carnival. My choice of costume was to
convey a theme of good and evil as well as helping my audience
to understand the traditions which take place within carnival. The
use of a Trinidad flag as a prop develops the stereotypical
conventions as it is a flag being flown at a carnival within the UK
rather than one of the major Caribbean carnivals. By showing
using a variety of camera angles mainly including medium close
ups of a woman flying a Trinidadian flag proudly as it is
coincides with the ideologies of Soca and that Caribbean people
are proud of the countries in which they come from. This has
allowed me to create a relation between both my primary and
secondary audiences and my media text. My choice of costumes
and props do not challenge the conventions within my genre as
real media products often show their main artist and cast
participate within carnival.
Throughout my media product I used a variety of camera work and
editing. I used a close up of a man covered in oil to elaborate on
a theme within my music video which was Jouvert. By including
this, it uses forms and conventions of a real media products as
many videos within the genre contain videos of „Jab-Jab‟.
However, I then went on to develop and challenge the forms and
conventions by putting the jab-jab footage in reverse.
I used an extreme close shot to show a man oiling himself up
preparing himself for the road, showing that they were getting
ready to start Jouvert; allowing me to use the forms and
conventions. Not only this, but within the shot the cast is looking
directly as the camera, breaking the fourth wall and allowing my
audience to further feel like they are involved within the video.
Overall, I chose to use this variety of camera work and editing to
allow my audience to understand the traditions of carnival and
express themselves further.
The narrative is introduced at the beginning of my music
video as I have used videos of carnival within my artists
name and song title. My music video would be seen to
develop the forms and conventions of my genre and real
media products as many artists within the genre often
have their narrative based on the name of their song
whereas my narrative is based on the „journey to carnival‟
over the summer period likewise to „Blaxx – Leh go‟ where
we see a random actor throughout the video. My narrative
is not constructed in a linear format but incorporates the
vast understanding of my genre allowing me to base it on
my previous film knowledge. This will allow my both my
primary and secondary audiences to feel at ease whilst
watching the video as it is not something that they will
have to have knowledge of to understand the meaning
which needs to be depicted.
