In 2004, U.S. barite production increased to 532,000 metric tons, with significant contributions from Nevada and Georgia, driven largely by demand from the oil and gas drilling markets. The consumption of barite saw an 18% rise, with most domestic sales directed toward petroleum well-drilling, while imports rose primarily from China and India. The demand for barite is expected to continue growing due to high levels of drilling activity and strong U.S. demand for natural gas.
