How do I find my total operating revenue on an Income Statement? Solution The total revenue of an organisation could braodly be classified into operating revenue and non operating revenue. Operating revenue is that portion in the income statement which reflects the revenue earned by the organisations from its regular business operations for conducting which the organisation has been incorporated. Non operating revenues are the ones which the company earned from other sources like the revenue earned from the sell of old assets. Which revenue will be operating and which one is non operating entirely depends upon the regular business activities for which the business organisation has been formed. For example in the income statement of a manufacturing organisation of a particular product, the revenue earned by selling the product is Operating Revenue, but if there is any income that has been earned by the same organisation in the form of interest on any investment made by it, that interest income or revenue will be classified as the Non operating revenue. On the other hand the interest income is a operating revenue for an organisation which runs its business as one providing financial services to the community like lending money to its clients. To find total operating revenue in the income statement one can either just add up the revenues earned by the organisation from its regular and day to day business operations OR one can find the non operating revenues (that is the revenue earned by the organisations from other sources, not related to its main business operations) and then can subtract the same from the total revenue as given in the income statement. Another important point regarding the operating revenue, is that, in the Income statement the operating expenses are subtracted from the Operating revenue to give the operating profit. The non operating revenues are shown after the operating profit under the heading \"other Income and Expenses\" to find the Net Income earned by the organisation during a given time period. .

Reading Lecture Elements of a Statement of Cash Flow A cash flow statement indicates flow of cash into and out of a business organization. In most cases, an organization’s cash in hand is lower than operations, although both have to be equal and this is attributed by outstanding bills still not paid by customers. A cash flow statement helps managers: Establish the changes in a company’s cash at hand from the activities undertaken over a given reporting period. Determine the company’s sources and uses of cash. Understand operating results throughout a given operating period. There are three types of financial activities detailed in a cash flow statement, which include operating activities, investing activities, and financial activities. A cash flow statement can take two forms: direct format and indirect format. Direct method : categorizes main classes of cash receipts and cash payment differently. Indirect method : focuses differentiating net income and net cash flow from a company’s operations. This is the commonly used method due to its ability to offer a limited amount of information. A cash flow statement can be compiled with the company's balance sheets and income statements of two years/accounting periods (Heakal, 2010). In calculation of statement of cash flow, line items in which cash was used are adjusted from the net income. The cash flow statement includes line items found in the balance sheets. Net income line items from the income statement are also needed, in addition to income tax expenses and depreciation expenses (Heakal, 2010). A cash inflow on a cash flow statement is positive while cash outflow is negative. The operating activities include an adjustment part and the remainder part that indicates the necessary changes needed to reflect cash on hand after changes in the balance sheet items. Other line items in cash flow statements whose change is of significant influence include inventories, accounts payable and accrued liabilities. Adjustments, on the other hand, refer to cash flow changes based on components of the income statement that do not need cash. These include amortization, depreciation or deferred income taxes. Cash in a company can be spent in various activities, among them investing activities to help the company grow. These activities include: Mergers or acquisitions Major improvements to existing buildings Major upgrades to existing factories and equipment Purchase or sale of marketable securities Purchase or sale of property, plant, and equipment The operating activities’ bottom line indicates how much cash a certain company has spent or generated from its operating activities. Income Statement One of the most important things for a business to understand is its profitability—literally, its ability to make a profit from the products it creates or sells. There are two key factors in determining profitability: (1) how much revenue the sales of the products generate; and (2) how much it costs to make and deliver those products. The simplest way to think about the income statement is with the simple equation below: Total Revenues - Total Expenses = Profit(or Loss) In essence, subtract the amount everything cost the business from the amount of revenue (or income) the business earned to see the profit. If things cost the business more than it earned in revenue, the company will see a loss. Of course, it’s not really that simple. There are different ways a business can make money, such as selling equipment. And there are also many expenses a business might incur during that same period of time. The income statement goes one step further, adding more detail so that people can understand where the key sources of income and expenses are. To help us better understand this statement, let’s look at an example from SunsTruck. Note that when a number is negative, it appears in parentheses. At the top of the statement, you’ll see that it clearly identifies three things: (1) the name of the company, (2) the title of the financial statement, and (3) the period of time the statement is summarizing. For this example, we’re looking at the income statement for SunsTruck for the Third Quarter (“Q3”), or the three months ending September 30, 2016. The first category of numbers at the top is called revenues. This is the total amount of income that the company earned during this time period. You can see that there are two main sources of revenue, or income for SunsTruck: (1) sales revenue , which is the money the business earned from selling its main product, sunglasses; and (2) other revenue , which is the money the business made from other sources, such as selling old equipment. For this quarter, SunsTruck made $80,000, which is shown as total revenues . The second area of revenue is related to the cost of earning that revenue. If you are in the service industry like a hospital or software design, this is called cost of revenues . In our example, SunsTruck sells a physical product, sunglasses, so it is called cost of goods sold (COGS) . This number represents the direct cost of either making the products or purchasing them from the supplier. In the case of SunsTruck, this number is the amount of money the company spent to buy the sunglasses from brands like Oakley or RayBan that were then sold in their truck. In the third quarter, SunsTruck spent $40,000 on sunglasses to sell in their truck. The third area of revenue shows gross profit -—total revenue minus the cost of goods sold.
