The document discusses the use of sound in fantasy and drama films. It notes that fantasy film soundtracks often give the genre a grand and mythical feel, while sound effects add realism. Research shows fantasy soundtracks are defined by emotional music matching the themes. Drama films tend to use upbeat music to make their soundtracks catchy and memorable. The document also discusses the importance of sound effects in creating tension and manipulating perceptions, as well as the use of voiceovers to create flashbacks and connect audiences to characters.
2. The Use Of Sound In
Drama/Fantasy Films
• The use of sound in this genre is very important.
The soundtrack often gives it a large and grand
feel (as well as beautiful and mythical), while the
sound effects and additional noises add a realistic
feel or a sense of reality, in the highly unrealistic
genre. This means that the audience feels a
connection to the scene or characters that
otherwise would seem otherworldly.
3. Research into fantasy soundtracks
• I looked at many fantasy
soundtracks, written by famed composers
such as Hans Zimmer and Alexandre
Desplat. I noticed that the fantasy genre is
often defined by its music, which gives
the feeling and emotion to the film, as
well as matching with themes (such as
medieval) and giving the movie some
personality.
• I found that the soundtrack often added
the magical element to the film and gave
energy to the fight or busy scenes.
• The soundtracks are often performed by
famous artists which gives the film some
profile as well as associating the music
with the movie.
4. Drama Soundtracks
• I then did some
research into drama
film soundtracks,
because our film,
although taken from a
fantasy story, was
more of a modern
drama.
• Most use catchy and
upbeat music to go
with their films, so
that it is liked and
remembered by the
audience.
5. Sound effects
• Sound effects (non-diagetic sound) are an important part of creating the movie fiction.
• We knew that sound effects would play a major part in creating our film. We thought
about post-production and how certain sounds will heighten the tension of the climax of
the film.
• We also wanted to distort some sounds in our film to show the influence of alcohol. In
this, we would use both music, and there distort it with special effects.
• We would also use sound effects (for example, footsteps) in silence to heighten the
drama and excite and raise curiosity in the audience.
6. Voice overs
• We decided to use a voice over
throughout the film, with
inspirations from many great films
that have used it also.
• It not only creates the eerie aspect
of hind sight, but also creates a kind
of flashback, informing the audience
from beyond the action.
• It also creates a personal relationship
between the main protagonist (or
whoevers talking) and the audience.
The character talks directly to the
spectator, narrating the action for
their benefit.
