UprightVR has developed a low-cost, portable virtual reality system called SafetyNet to assess fall risk in seniors. The system uses an VR headset and tablet to administer 8 sensory tests in under 10 minutes. It identifies deficits in sensory integration that are correlated to functional fall risk. Extensive validation studies show it equals or exceeds existing methods. Several pilot programs with senior living communities found it effective for identifying high risk patients, targeting interventions, and tracking outcomes over time to reduce falls.

In a series of brief tests taking less than 10 minutes, deficits are isolated and quantified in
the central integration and functional use of sensory systems including somatosensory,
visual, and vestibular.
• 8 sensory conditions are presented through virtual reality
• Postural response is measured and recorded in a self-contained VR headset, without the need
for any other equipment.
• Deficits in the central integration and functional use of sensory systems
are identified.
• Risk factors based on these deficits are correlated to actual functional risk (see patient report),
leading to targeted therapeutic intervention.
• Periodic reassessment tracks the impact of the therapeutic response,
and changes in risk levels.
• The VR technology is inexpensive, ultra-portable, easy to administer and fun
for the patient or senior resident.
