The UO Economics Club is assigning a research project this term where each member will write an op-ed (open editorial) on a topic of their choosing. Op-eds allow authors to develop their writing style while presenting a coherent argument backed by data analysis. Members can write individual pieces or collaborate in groups presenting differing opinions on a subject. Op-eds will be 1200 words or less and must cite any outside sources using MLA or Chicago style. Completed pieces will be presented and reviewed before being published on the UO economics website.

There are many ways to run an effective campaign. Utilizing scientific data is critical for a well-rounded campaign. Scientific data can help with your messaging, influence, and depth of knowledge on an issue. However, learning to tell “junk” science from real science is essential. Citing incorrect science can damage the campaign and your reputation. Knowing how to counter bad science can give your campaign an edge. For example, “Global warming is a natural cycle according to some scientists.” We have all heard this statement which is based on bad science. However, it has resonated with some policy makers. It is critical to learn how to counter bad science as well as know the resources to find sound science (whether you are with a small group or large group).
Participants will hear two case studies on how science and data were effectively utilized. One involves using air quality data to bolster the case for emission clean up. The second involves using data to structure a campaign on public transit.

Students will demonstrate their ability to choose relevant sources, summarize key information, provide a critical analysis, and use proper citation in their portfolio consisting of topics concerning one or more of the international business issues presented in the textbook. Students will be expected to show development of research and critical thinking skills by completing an analysis of articles related to course content. Each portfolio must include 5 essays based on articles related to topics in international business, with no more than 2 articles relating to any one chapter in the textbook. Each essay of the portfolio should include a short summary of the article, a thesis statement, and a short analysis demonstrating how the article relates to specific issues in international business. For the portfolio, a minimum of 2 different sources must be used. Any print, audio, or audiovisual source will be accepted. Students must describe articles that are not print-based in detail – for example, if you include an interview, you must describe the circumstances under which the interview took place. Popular sources use common vocabulary versus scholarly uses technical language specific to the field of study (Cendegas, 2015).
Popular sources contain advertisements, whereas scholarly contains charts or graphs to present data (Cendegas, 2015).
Scholarly sources contain bibliography and reference list and popular sources do not (Cendegas, 2015).
Scholarly sources are peer reviewed to ensure reliability of the information of people in the same field of study, whereas popular are only reviewed by editors for general interest or entertainment (Cendegas, 2015).
Scholarly journal articles are published in a standard format of containing: Abstract, Introduction, Methods & Materials, Results, Discussion and References (Cendegas, 2015).

A scholarly peer-reviewed source from the Ashford University Library is from Timothy Wunder on the largest age demographic who lives in poverty are children (2019). This source provide statistical data on the percentage of household in each income bracket are able to afford children and percentage of those living in poverty, which makes the information credible.
A popular source is from Newsweek article written by Asher Stocker in 2019 about a report released by the Congressional Budget office on effects of increasing minimum wage to bring people out of poverty. As a lot of great statistical data is published in the article it is bias towards supporting the candidates in the democratic party. Not to mentioned, the information could be taken out of context and the amount of advertisements caused a distraction.

Students will demonstrate their ability to choose relevant sources, summarize key information, provide a critical analysis, and use proper citation in their portfolio consisting of topics concerning one or more of the international business issues presented in the textbook. Students will be expected to show development of research and critical thinking skills by completing an analysis of articles related to course content. Each portfolio must include 5 essays based on articles related to topics in international business, with no more than 2 articles relating to any one chapter in the textbook. Each essay of the portfolio should include a short summary of the article, a thesis statement, and a short analysis demonstrating how the article relates to specific issues in international business. For the portfolio, a minimum of 2 different sources must be used. Any print, audio, or audiovisual source will be accepted. Students must describe articles that are not print-based in detail – for example, if you include an interview, you must describe the circumstances under which the interview took place. A scholarly peer-reviewed source from the Ashford University Library is from Timothy Wunder on the largest age demographic who lives in poverty are children (2019). This source provide statistical data on the percentage of household in each income bracket are able to afford children and percentage of those living in poverty, which makes the information credible.
A popular source is from Newsweek article written by Asher Stocker in 2019 about a report released by the Congressional Budget office on effects of increasing minimum wage to bring people out of poverty. As a lot of great statistical data is published in the article it is bias towards supporting the candidates in the democratic party. Not to mentioned, the information could be taken out of context and the amount of advertisements caused a distraction.

PHI 2604 CREATING YOUR OUTLINE
A good practice before you write your paper is to create an outline. This should include 1) your thesis statement (main argument), 2) an outline and 3) a works cited page.
Follow the MLA style unless otherwise clarified with the professor.
The outline should be more detailed than just noting a) Introduction, b) argument, c) conclusion. This is too superficial to be helpful for you. Instead consider the main concepts that you will explain, or the main argument you will make and how each of the elements of the paper fit together.
In developing your outline, it may be helpful to keep the following in mind regarding philosophy papers:
"A philosophy paper presents a reasoned defense of some thesis. So a philosophy paper typically does at least one of the following:
• Defends a thesis by offering plausible reasons to support it
• Defends a thesis by showing that arguments against it are unconvincing

Negative Consequences: Single Use Plastic and Its Detriment to the Greater Good
Environmental pollution is detrimental to non-human well-being and one of the major contributors is the creation of single use plastic, much of which ends up in the oceans. We have all seen the disturbing images of turtles with plastic bags around their necks or whales, sharks and dolphins whose post-mortems reveal stomachs full of plastic debris (Hastings, 209). However, single use plastic is also detrimental to human well-being because, I argue, human health and happiness is only possible within a thriving and healthy environment. In other words, single use plastic is a moral concern. In this paper, I review single use plastic according to the utilitarian principle that we ought “to act according to the greater good for the greater number,” (Bentham, 205) and that we ought to do our utmost to reduce suffering in both human and non-human species. I also consider Bentham’s claim that “one only counts as one” and argue that from a utilitarian perspective, we should dissuade the production of single use plastic.

• Open the above link, and download the PDF file to your computer.
• When you skim reading the report you will notice the following:
o Starting page number “1” you find “Part 1”, which shows the merchandise trade profiles for the world (regional and
selected trade or economic groupings).
o Starting page 31 (index of countries) until page 371, the report provides a country by country trade profile,
alphabetically, for most countries in the world.
o In each country’s trade profile, there exist summary profile on the first page, and at the end of the page you can see
“Table 1” which shows each country’s “top 10 export commodities” for the different periods between 2015 and
2017.

• In D2L (under Content), you can find tab called “Project”, under this “Project” tab you can find a file named “UN Table 1.”
This PDF file includes data on selected countries with different percentages of poverties (poverty gap) for the year 2015.
The Project:
• You will have to write a socio-economic essay on the link between different poverty levels of different countries and the
countries’ comparative advantages of different products, or group of products.
Step-by-Step Instructions (Mandatory): (required to pass the project).
• Compare at least 10 countries of your choice with different poverty gaps (preferred: include both developed and developing
countries).
• Investigate whether there exists a trend between the change in the poverty gaps (%) and the specific products that the
country exports the most (In this project you always assume that countries export most the products in which they enjoy
comparative advantages in producing them.
• Conduct an academic literature review on your analysis (required: at least three academic articles).
• Using your own conducted literature review, explain why such trends exist or do-not-exist.
• Use your analysis to investigate which are the most significant products that high-poverty countries export? which are the
most significant products that low-poverty countries export, which are the most significant products that medium-poverty
countries export, and try to investigate if there is a trend. Compare your analysis by your findings from the literature review.

UO ECONOMICS CLUB Winter 2016 Research Project: OP-Eds (Open Editorials) The contemporary world is full opinions on ways to go about solving problems (e.g. unemployment, trade deficit, wage increase, policy, etc.). It also enables critics to point out faulty arguments if the data is analyzed incorrect. The problem is data can be interpreted different ways, therefore a coherent argument or counter argument is necessary. By writing opinion pieces, one can develop their style and voice, as well create a coherent argument around the available data. Mainly opinion pieces allows the author the freedom to express their opinion on a subject, and at the same time concretely secure their point of view for others to critique. Opinion pages also create discipline when using citation; it let readers know there is data available backing up your opinion. This term: -Each member is free to take on subject and work on an OP-ED. -Each piece has a limit of 1200 words. -If any outside sources is used it has to be cited (MLA or Chicago style) Remember this Op-Eds will be published therefore there’s no need for plagiarism (Outside resources not necessary but highly suggested) Outside resources can be: - articles - news articles - scholarly papers Credible sources highly suggested -Member can also work in groups, collaborations, if the opinion piece has two different opinion on the same subject.
