This Ph.D. dissertation evaluates link level performance and proposes a link abstraction method for LTE/LTE-Advanced downlink. It develops a link level simulator to model the channel estimation error and evaluate performance for SISO-AWGN and MIMO with perfect/imperfect channel estimation. It also proposes a novel link abstraction technique to predict block error rate in multipath fading including the effects of HARQ retransmissions. The objectives are to evaluate link performance and develop a link abstraction method for LTE/LTE-Advanced downlink.

Cassandra Performance Tuning Like You've Been Doing It for Ten YearsJon Haddad
Slides from my performance talk at the 2023 Cassandra summit. Here I share my tools and process for improving Cassandra's performance. We look at the OODA loop, USE method, high level observability tools and system tools such as flame graphs and bcc-tools (ebpf). Using the example of giving more memory to Cassandra, we explore how to leverage async-profiler and bcc-tools to generate cpu flame graphs and histograms of I/O performance. We can see how identifying a performance bottleneck like time spent in decompression can guide us to solving the right problems - in this case resizing compression buffers.

The rise of microservice-based applications has had many knock-on effects, not least on the complexity of monitoring your application.
Order-of-magnitude increase in the number of moving parts and rate of change of the application require us to reassess traditional monitoring techniques.
In this talk we will discuss some different approaches to monitoring, visualising and tracing containerised, microservices-based applications.
We’ll present different techniques to some of the emergent problems, and try not to rant too much.
Oracle trace data collection errors: the story about oceans, islands, and riversCary Millsap
When you execute a business task on a computer system, you create an experience. The duration of this experience is called response time. The richest and easiest information about response time to obtain in the whole Oracle technology stack is available from the Oracle Database tier: Oracle's extended SQL trace data. But in almost 100% of first tries with using trace data, people make a data collection mistake that complicates their analysis. This is the story of that mistake.
Tabular Data Stream: The Binding Between Client and SAP ASESAP Technology
This lecture will cover the TDS (Tabular Data Stream) protocol in different aspects. We'll cover in brief form its history and then go over the specfication via a walk through method so the learner can understand how to navigate the documentation. Critical aspects of the protocol such as login, execution and result set processing will be covered. The majority of the lecture will cover how to collect the TDS logs from different ASE clients (OpenClient, ODBC, ADO.NET and jConnect) and how to format the traces in readable form. From there we'll look at problem scenarios and learn how toread the trace and utilize it for diagnostic purposes.
This document discusses factors that influence web search latency from both the user and system perspectives. It summarizes that users expect fast response times from search engines, while search engines aim to balance speed, quality, and costs. The document then outlines components that contribute to latency, experiments measuring user sensitivity to latency, and the impact of latency on user search experience. Specifically, it finds users notice delays over 1000ms and that faster search sites lead to higher user engagement.
The document discusses cracking pay TV systems by analyzing the Digicipher 2 conditional access system used in satellite and cable networks. It provides details on the MPEG transport stream, encryption methods, and service information tables used by Digicipher 2 to control access. Methods discussed include capturing signals with USB tuners, decoding service information tables in the transport stream, analyzing encryption keys and algorithms by disassembling firmware from the access control processor.
The document summarizes a project to improve the Cp and Cpk of roll crowning through reducing variation in roll profiles. It outlines the current process performance including high standard deviation and sigma rating of 1.11-2.76. Modifications were made to the data collection process and a measurement system study was conducted to analyze gauge repeatability and reproducibility. A cause and effect study identified a relationship between roll profile variation and moisture content deviation in the paper. The goal is to improve the sigma rating from the current 2.25 to 2.65 through applying DMAIC methodology to identify and implement solutions.
The LSG-1200A compact goniophotometer is used to measure the luminous intensity distribution curve, intensity data, beam angle and other photometric for Chip LED, LED Module, LED Spotlight and all other light which spread angle is no more than 180 degree.
This document provides information about Lisun Electronics Inc., a leader in lighting and electrical test instruments. It includes contact information for Lisun's global offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Hangzhou. The second page describes Lisun's compact goniophotometer model LSG-1200A, which is used to measure light distribution and intensity parameters for various light sources. It lists the product's technical specifications and measurement capabilities.
The agenda covers discussions around system status, metadata quality, and a system rewrite for CrossRef's reference linking system. Key points include:
- Query response times have improved from 1.9 seconds in 2009 to under 1 second in recent years. Deposit times are now under 5 minutes for over 50% of submissions.
- Operations have changed with new technologies for load balancing, monitoring, and databases. Testing of citation parsing shows promising results identifying DOIs within unstructured citations.
- Issues discussed include the problems caused by alternative titles, deleting DOIs, and resolving conflicts between matching metadata and DOIs. Timestamps are important for reprocessing deposits when ownership changes.
A high-level view of container monitoring and its challenges in data sourcing (short-lived connections) and viz (hairballs). All in the context of Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Weave Cloud
This document summarizes load testing experiments conducted on Amazon RDS using an Oracle database. The tests aimed to evaluate RDS performance under different configurations and provide a basis for future load testing. Tests were run using m2.4xlarge and m1.xlarge instance types with varying provisioned IOPS. Key results showed that provisioned IOPS had a significant impact on throughput and latency. Higher IOPS configurations achieved thousands of transactions per second but also had periods of high latency. Lower IOPS configurations had more stable performance but lower throughput. The experiments provided insights into how different factors like instance type, IOPS provisioning, and read/write ratios influence RDS and database performance under load.
C* Summit 2013: CMB: An Open Message Bus for the Cloud by Boris WolfDataStax Academy
CQS and CNS are message bus services for the cloud that are API compatible with AWS SQS and SNS. They use Cassandra for persistence and Redis for caching to provide scalability, high availability, and low latency. Extensive testing showed CQS can scale linearly to over 15,000 messages per second and CNS can handle thousands of messages per second with end-to-end latencies under 100ms. The services are in production use at Comcast to power applications like their X1 Sports app.

Toshiba presented their machine translation system for the WAT2015 workshop. Their system uses statistical post-editing (SPE) to correct rule-based machine translation (RBMT) output. It also combines SPE and phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT) results by reranking the merged n-best lists using a recurrent neural network language model. Evaluation showed the combined system achieved the best results on most language pairs compared to SPE and SMT individually. Analysis of system selections by the combination found it primarily chose translations from SPE.
