So, let’s take a moment to just breath, and feel the moment, you have hectic life so now take the time to be present here and now.
Sit with the spine straight, embody a posture of dignity for the king and queen that you are and now just breath in and out and feel.
What does that feel like?
It feels good hein!
It’s difficult to put words on how it feels to be you.
maybe you feel peace, or power, maybe ache or just nothing yet. It’s fine.
What you feel is distinct from what you feel. It is not a concept or a thought in your head, it is just an experience of feeling your body from the inside.
On top of that experience of you feeling your body from the inside, you might feel anger at a client, or joy, or sadness.
You notice again that those emotions does not exist as ideas in your head, but are things you experience in your stomach, your jaws, your neck…
Can you separate these feelings and sensations from the sense you have of being who you are?
No.
But strangely enough, our society value the head and the mind. There are even head hunters, but how many body hunters?
My purpose today is to bring more sensations in your body to help you unleash the great leader you are and create a positive and strong presence.
Who wants to have a positive impact?
Who wants to have more charisma?
Who wants to sell it’s value?
You are in the right place!
Are you comfortable seated?
Yeah…
Now stand up…
Form a semi circle all facing the stage.
One by one, you will step neutrally to the center, face the others, look them in the eyes and when you are at the end, state your name, then go back neutrally to your place.
I will ask you then how you’ve experienced this, do you believe you were charismatic, were you stressed.
Then I’ll ask the others what they felt.
Here, I want to stress the fact that all comments must be constructive and respectful. Just speak about the behavior, not the person, and only what you saw.
So, we can see that some people are more charismatic than others.
Why is that?
Why is he charismatic?
And her?
Why is he not?
I won’t give you a lesson about charisma and presence, I prefer to help you find your own charisma and learn how to be more present.
The good news is that presence can be learn, it is not innate, even though some people have innate characteristic of charisma.
For example, I’m tall, energetic, open to the others so I come across as naturally charismatic.
All these traits can be teach and learn by doing, so let’s do this?
There is a broad litterature on charisma and presence.
I won’t go there, I’ve picked the traits that I believe are the most impactful.
The body: it is 8 times as big as the head, so it has more impact. According to Albert Merhabian, american psychologist, there are 3 major factors that influence the communication, words 7, tone of voice 38 and non verbal behavior 55
The voice: the pitch, the variation, the tone, all the ways we convey words have impact. 38% according to Merhabian.
Strength: studies show that people find more charismatic people who show strength and energy. Often in the eyes and in the hands but also in the posture. Being slump is not a sign of strength.
Warmth: also, according to studies, charisma is perceived in people who are warm and open to the others, people who can use their emotions and bring the best in others.
Let see each of these pillars in details and exercise
We all have a innate power and serenity. To trigger it, the only way is to be centered, meaning to be in the here and now.
It is what I did to start this workshop, by bringing you to yourself by focusing on your breathing.
Centring
Tall, bring the attention on the body to avoid the unending movement of thoughts that bring us away form the present. Bring attention to our felt self of ourselves.
Then we choose to take a posture of dignity to help the somatic sensors to trigger positive and strength impact. (example of slump, laid back, forward and center)
Length
Stand up, feet shoulder-width apart, arm hang down by your sides.
Stretch spine, imagine pulling hair up. Raise chin.
Relax the body
Width
Balance right and left. We have a dominant side.
Find your balance by rocking back and forth up to the point you feel you put equal wight on both feet.
Relax into width and feel what it is like to take up space in that dimension.
This is the social dimension, so being contracted or out of balance can show in our relations our work-life balance.
Depth
Balance point front to back.
Wight is balanced between the balls of your feet and your heels. Which is a balance between the present and the future and finding that point where you are in the present.
Keep length and width in check.
This may feel strange as we are use to another posture that carries all our history.
This posture is your charismatic leader’s posture.
Attention to center
Breath and feel. Bring your attention in your Tan tien or Hara. Feel form that place, create awareness of it’s presence. Don’t think about it. You’ll need that sensation later. Just feel if it is hot or cold, tense or not, vibrant or numb, sore or tired…
Exercise
p135
Low tone
Voices come in many tones. You can’t change your voice, but you can modulate your tone.
A low tone comes from the tan tien, the center, that’s why it is perceived as charismatic.
EX: By 2, present your sales pitch in 3 tones (high, medium and low). Then exchange on your perception of charisma. Don’t change the words.
Avoid the question inflection (I do it sometimes with my kids, and it’s no surprise that it is the times when they don’t listen to me ;-)
Vocal variance
You are not the voice that announces the train, monocords or monotonous
It is the variance that brings charisma.
I.E I’m a PROFESIONNAL, CERTIFiED coach, …
Ex: 2 other pairs, state your pitch using variance. Exchange your percetions. Try one time monotonous or how you do normally then stress the variance. See the difference
Smile
Somoene who smiles when he speaks convey more warmth and peace. Try to bring a smile into your words. It can be slight or obvious.
Breath
Some people tend to blurt out their words so that it is one big chunk. Have you ever felt like you had to breath? I did.
Bring some breathe in your sentences, it helps variance.
Would you follow someone weak? Or perceived as weak? No.
Strength is not the muscular ability one can have, it is rather a mix of Intention and determination.
Intention
“The energy flow where the intention is”.
A great leader has intention, it is his vision that emerged to the surface of the body. You can feel it, it is clearly perceptible.
Intention is easy, it is an alignement between what you believe and what you do.
EX: Pairs. One stretch one arm ,the other just test the resistance at first. Then the tester will test it again 2 times, when I will ask the stretched arms to thinks of 2 different sentences.
“I’m a man” “I’m a woman”
Which was more resistant?
Now switch, stretch arm and test. Then the stretcher think that his arm is so broad that it goes beyond the wall and is attached firmly to a specific point. No test. When is it stronger?
The mind is powerful and often it’s power is not used properly. Here, by putting the right intention, you can duplicate your strength.
It means that when you go for an important meeting (investors or clients), put intention in your mind. What do you want to convey? How do you want to be perceived and jut bring that intention.
Smile
Smile is the visible part of success. Success brings joy and we smile. So smiling people are very attractive because they are perceived succesful and because joy is contagious. Joy must be shared and smiling is one way of doing it.
Studies show that 9 people out of 10 prefer to work around positive people, it even help them to perform better.
Focus
A leader knows where to go but most of all, he focus it’s attention on the target and vision. It is no wonder that the eagle is the symbol of power, it’s sharp gaze embodies focus.
Energy
Without energy no action can be taken. It is like a wild horse, if you don’t use energy to show your leadership, it won’t obey.
9 out of 10 people are more productive around positive people. Positive people are warm, they smile and there are in contact with others.
Emotion
Emotions are a great source of power. E-movere, that activates. Emotions help being authentic.
Use your emotion to find the right resource.
Being able to feel one’s emotion but also to recognize other’s is a powerful tool. People like it.
It is empathy.
Open
Charisma comes from being open, by facing the other with the torso turned towards the person.
It is gazing deeply (check the eye color)
Open people ask question about the other, they make people feel valued.
Ex: by pair, as if you were in a cocktail, start a discusion and ask questions starting with How, What, Who, When. Ask for feelings or perception and react with emotions. Tilt your head and nod
It makes the testosterone pumping, the hormone of confidence. We all have it, man and woman.
Ask people to tell their story
People remember how thy feel with you. Use Yes And and ask if they have the same experience.
Vulnerability
Embrace your vulnerability, it is what is making you human and people can relate to it.
Gushing
When you speak with someone, don’t gossip as the negative traits you use to criticize someone else stick to you. Instead, gush and marvel at the other’s achievement. If you want to elicit positive impression, speak about someone else in a gushing way.
Ex: by pair, in a cocktail setting, speak about the speaker in a gushing ways that are close to what you want to convey. Use my presence as the speaker.
Using these simple techniques will help you overcome the feeling on the right.
Remember, people remember mostly how they feel with you rather than what you said.
Be centered, take an attitude of dignity, be open, smile, use energy and focus, show your hands, tilt the head and ask questions.
