UMAK HERONS ARE 5-PEAT
OVERALL CHAMPIONS OF THE
7TH NATIONAL ALCU GAMES
WITH 118 MEDALS
Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro
– For the last five consecutive
years, University of Makati
(UMak) has proven that defeat
does not exist in their vocabu-
lary as they captured once more
the overall championship,
sweeping 63 golds, 28 silvers
and 27 bronzes or an over-
whelming haul of 118 medals
in the 7th National Association
of Local Colleges and Universi-
ties (ALCU) Games held from
March 15 to 20.
UMak is 45 gold medals ahead
and has almost double the total
65 medal tally of Pamantasan
ng Lungsod ng Marikina
(PLMar), which snatched 2nd
place with 18 gold, 22 silver
and 25 bronze medals. Taguig
City University (TCU) lost by
only three medals to PLMar
sliding to 3rd place, as they
went home with 15 gold, 26
silver and 21 bronze medals or
a total of 62 medals.
UMak Herons bested 20 other
schools from different parts of
the country in 11 out of 19
events, as they won the champi-
onship in Arnis Laban, Athlet-
ics, Women’s Basketball,
Dance Sports, Futsal, Rugby,
Sepak Takraw, Table Tennis,
Taekwondo (Men and Women),
and Men’s Volleyball. Mean-
while, the UMak Cheerdance
Team, Chess Team, Men’s Ar-
nis Team, Women’s Volleyball
Team and Ms. UMak Jeniellyn
Lou Saldo got silver medals
and the Men’s Basketball Team
got the bronze medal to add to
the medal haul of UMak.
With the support from ALCU-
AA Executive Director and
UMak Executive Vice Presi-
dent Raymundo Arcega and
ALCUAA Chairman and Ath-
letics Development Center Di-
rector (ADC) Dominador Lera,
Jr. and other school and city
officials, the 5-day competition
marked another milestone in
the institution as the great brave
herons flapped their wings and
soared high to bring glory to
the university and the city.
Gordon College is all set to
host the 8th National ALCU
Games next year in Olongapo
City, Zambales, where the
UMak Herons are aiming for
nothing less than a 6-peat over-
all championship.

tion of one fam-
ily for the 43
years
of University of
Makati (UMak),
the Foundation
Week opened
with a Family
Day at the UMak Oval on
March 1, 2015. True to its
theme “UMak: 1 Family @
43,” the celebration was joined
by students, UMak officials,
employees and their family
members.
The activity kicked-off with
Family Zumba, a
perfect start to
warm-up the day
filled with fun ac-
tivities. Meanwhile,
after shedding some
sweat, the kids
braced themselves
to compete for the
400-Meter
Run. Jycy Robin
Raval, son of Adri-
an Bernard Raval
from the College of
Computer Science
won the challenge.
The Color Run
made the day more
colorful as employ-
ees and students
rushed to the finish
line as human can-
vass stroked with different
hues. Angelo Maynard Encor-
nal and Jackielyn Sinadjan won
the Students Category, while
Mr. Jarve Sanchez of the Col-
lege of Allied Health Studies
(COAHS) and Prof. Maria Te-
resa See of the Center of Hu-
man Kinesthetics won the Em-
ployees Category of the game.
Arts De La Scene and Pep
Squad from COAHS gave an
intermission number to add
flavor to the family event.
UMak Executive Vice Presi-
dent Raymundo Arcega
thanked the participants, espe-
cially the families of each em-
ployee for letting their spouses
or parents go to work to con-
tribute to the development of
the university. In his speech, he
said that it was the first time
that UMak spent a day with the
family of the people behind the
success of the university, thus
paving the way for another his-
tory in the making.

THAN 500 EMPLOYEES OF THE UNIVERSITY
Recognizing the loyalty, ser-
vice and contribution of the
people behind the achievements
of the university, the Gawad
Parangal was held to honor, not
only the retirees and employees
who have stayed with UMak
for 5, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40
years, but all 500 plus employ-
ees who have brought pride and
glory to UMak in their own
way throughout the 43 UMak
years. Held at the Main Thea-
ter on March 3, the event was
graced by 104 awardees and
retirees, their family members,
plus almost 200 university offi-
cials, other employees and
guests.
University Secretary Elyxzur
Ramos, in his candid welcome
remarks, said that the awardees
and retirees set an example
worth emulating by the younger
generation of UMak employ-
ees, despite imperfections they
may have. Meanwhile, in the
congratulatory message of Ex-
ecutive Vice President Ray-
mundo Arcega, Dr. Arcega
recognized the efforts of the
family members of the award-
ees and said that management
aims to provide more opportu-
nities to give recognition to
deserving personnel, while con-
tinuing to be receptive to their
concerns and to seek sound
ways to improve employee well
-being.
“Sometimes there are no met-
rics to recognize an important
achievement … what you really
contributed ay mahirap sukat-
in”, said University President
Tomas Lopez, Jr., as he re-
called the story of one of the
Yolanda scholars of the univer-
sity. The scholars, who missed
weeks of classes as they trans-
ferred from Tacloban to Ma-
kati, cited Prof. Vismar Paras,
one of the retirees from the
College of Arts and Sciences,
who went beyond his regular
work hours to tutor them so that
they can catch up with the les-
sons. President Lopez regretted
that such generous deeds may
even be more commendable,
but mostly go unnoticed.
The president added that it is
not just the 104 employees who
should be applauded, but also
the more than 500 employees of
UMak, as he lauded the contri-
bution of all the employees who
have brought the university to
its success and stature today as
one of the leading local univer-
sities in the country. Meantime
Makati Mayor Junjun Binay
said, in his inspirational mes-
sage read by Prof. Lopez,
thanked the retirees for giving
the best time of their lives in
serving the university as well as
the awardees for choosing
UMak as the fortunate object of
their loyalty.
Dr. Josephine Rupert, in re-
sponse to her 40-year service
recognition, recounted her jour-
ney when she first worked at
the Makati Polytechnic Com-
munity College (MPPC) in
1974 as a stenographer. She
said that if she were to include
her years as a student, she has
actually been a resident of
UMak for 43 years, the same
number of years that UMak has
been in existence.
Armed with an Associate De-
gree in Business Technology
from MPPC, the then promising
new graduate immediately
passed the Civil Service Exami-
nation and was encouraged by
her professor to enter the insti-
tution. The rest is history, as
this incoming CBA Dean wit-
nessed a great transformation in
the university she considers
family.
A tribute was given to the retir-
ees to acknowledge their signif-
icant contribution and service
to the university that they have
chosen to be their last home.

Maurillo, Center for Broadcast
and Digital Arts College Secre-
tary Florabel Berenguela,
UMak Chorale and UMak Jam-
mers, accompanied by the
UMak Brass Band made the
event more glamorous.
Gawad Parangal is one of the
momentous events of the uni-
versity giving recognition to
employees with exemplary
years of service in the institu-
tion.
