Universal basic income (UBI) is a government program that provides all adult citizens a regular, unconditional sum of money to cover basic needs. UBI aims to reduce poverty and inequality by giving everyone a minimum level of financial security. It has five key components: it is universal, provided periodically, to individuals in cash without conditions. India's Economic Survey advocated UBI as an alternative to existing welfare schemes. Proponents argue UBI could reduce poverty, increase demand, ease implementation, and allow people more time for themselves by reducing work hours without loss of income. However, concerns remain around the feasibility and costs of implementing a UBI program.
