History 
Wicker Park has been part of Chicago since its incorporation to the city in 1837 
Industry came into the area in 1857 with the opening of Rolling Mill Steel Works. 
◦ Irish community settled there to provide the labor 
◦ Residencies were established along the major avenues of Ashland and Milwaukee, in turn pushing 
population out of the city 
◦ Clothing and instrument stores, breweries, and cigar manufacturers added to the scene of the district of 
Wicker Park 
The aftermath of Chicago's Great Fire of 1871 created an increased residential and commercial 
scene in Wicker Park

• 1930-1973/5 "depressed community" followed buy an explosion of rebirth and
