Unit Plan: Habitats
Day 1: Rainforest Habitat
Analyze Learners:
The students in my third grade class are between the ages of eight and nine years old. The class consists
of 25 students, 14 boys and 11 girls who are all at grade level. 2 of the students have diagnosed ADD.
State Objectives:
The students in my third grade class that are between the ages of eight and nine years old, 2 of which
have diagnosed ADD, will be able to identify what the rainforest habitat is and certain characteristics of
the habitat, like plants and animals, by exploring a Web Quest, listening to a podcast, and creating a QR
code, by the end of the week. This will be done with a 90% accuracy rate.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
My children will go through a Web Quest, made by me on Microsoft Word, which is an introduction to
all of the habitats we will be studying. I will split them into groups and each group must give a
presentation at the end of the week on the habitat they are assigned to teach the rest of the class.
My students will explore a Zunal Web Quest that I created about animals from the Rainforest together
in groups on classroom laptops. We will then go through it together on the Smart Board.
After this, my students will listen to the podcast about plants from the rainforest and different
characteristics that they have. We will have class discussion about why my students think these plants
have these characteristics.
They will then use the QR code that I have up on the Smart Board to explore the website that the QR
connects them to about the rainforest and unique facts about it.
I will then give my students the URL to the classroom Pinterest page so that they can explore all of the
pins that I have pinned on my Rainforest pin board
Utilize resources:
Preview: I will make sure that all of the classroom laptop are completely charged a turning on properly.
I will make sure that my Word Web Quest and Zunal Web Quest is preloaded on every laptop, and my
QR code is ready on the Smart Board. I will also be sure to have my podcast pulled up.
Prepare Materials- I will make sure I have everything that I need to complete my lessons for the day.
Desks will be facing forward so everyone can see the Smart Board and laptops will be available. I will
have the Pinterest URL ready to distribute at the end of the day.
Prepare Environment- I will make sure that I have all of my notes with me when my lesson starts, and
that the laptops are ready. Each student will have a laptop available to them. The Smart Board will be
on. I will check my Pinterest to make sure that all of the pins are on the board.
Prepare Students- I will tell them about the unit the Friday before we leave for the weekend and to be
thinking about what they think habitats. When they walk into the classroom, everything will already be
set up and ready for them.
Provide the Learning Experience: For this day of the unit we will be discussing the rainforest habitat, but
first we will look at a Web Quest about all of the habitats we will be studying throughout the week as an
introduction. They will be split into groups and assigned a habitat that they will do a project on at the
end of the week as assessment. My students will explore the mysteries of the habitat and learn some of
its characteristics, first through a Zunal Web Quest, made and provided by me. The will go through the
Zunal Web Quest together in groups. After that, we will go over the Web Quest together on the Smart
Board. Then I will have my students listen to a podcast where they will learn about some of the plants
from the rainforest and how they are unique to the area. We will have discussion. Then the students are
to walk up to the Smart Board and use the QR code to search through the website provided and look at
unique facts and characteristics about the rainforest. At the end of the day, I will give my students the
URL to our classroom Pinterest page and they will look at the pins on the Rainforest board.
Require learner participation:
To make sure all of my students participate, I will set up a reward for them to want to participate. I will
give them a piece of candy of their choice at the end of the day. If they participate in discussion actively,
I will let them choose their partners for the group project at the end of the week.
Evaluate and Revise:
At the end of the day, I will have the student write in their daily journals about what they have learned.
They will have to provide me with at least 4 facts that they have learned and something they found
interesting about the rainforest.
