Technical Camera operator A television
camera operator
works with digital,
electronic and
film cameras and
produces
pictures for
directors by
combining the
use of complex
technology with
creative visual
skills.
In a studio, where the
camera operator usually
follows a camera script,
which gives the order of
shots. This is practiced at
rehearsal and is cued by
the director during
recording. The skill lies in
interpreting what the
director wants and acting
quickly and effectively to
achieve it.
• Taking sole responsibility in
situations where only one
camera operator is involved in
the filming;
• Keeping up to date with filming
methods and equipment;
• Repairing and maintaining
equipment;
• Demonstrating a good awareness of
health and safety issues;
Driving crew, actors and equipment to
and from locations.
Your hours could
often be long and
irregular, and may
include shift work
and nights depending
on the production
documentary
programmers is
£285; for
commercials £411;
and for TV news
£227.
Editorial Film/video editor A film or video
editor is
responsible for
assembling
recorded raw
material into a
finished product
suitable for
broadcasting.
The material may
consist of camera
footage,
dialogue, sound
effects, graphics
and special
effects. The
editor may be
part of a team
and they will
usually work
closely with the
director to
achieve the
desired end
result.
Digital technology,
specialist computer
software and high-quality
digitization of sound and
pictures have effectively
replaced the traditional
manual method of cutting
film. Depending on the
product, an editor may be
very involved in creating
the narrative, structure
and tone of the
programmed or film. In
some situations, they may
be given creative freedom
while in others they may
be needed merely to
operate the machine.
• Inputting uncut rushes and
sound, and
synchronizing and
storing them into files
on the computer;
• Digitally cutting the files
to put together the
sequence of the film
and deciding what is
usable;
• Creating a 'rough cut' (or
assembly edit) of the
programmed/film and
determining the exact
cutting for the next and
final stages;
Range of typical
starting salaries:
£18,000-£25,000 for
those employed by a
television or post-
production studio. This
is not typically an
entry level/graduate
job; entrants start at a
lower-paid level, which
can be around the
national minimum
wage, working as
runners and then
assistant editors
before reaching this
post.
Administrative Film production
coordinators
Film production
coordinators are the
administrative
professionals behind
the scenes of motion
picture productions.
They may manage
schedules and
budgets, cater to the
needs of
crewmembers and
perform an
assortment of
general
administrative tasks.
While they don't
usually work on set,
film production
coordinators work
closely with
producers and
directors to help the
production run
smoothly.
Film production
coordinators provide
various administrative
services to keep the cast
and crew happy and the
production on schedule
and within budget. This
entails daily contact with
other departments of the
company, such as human
resources, sales and
accounts payable, as well
as vendors outside of the
company.
Computer skills are often
mandatory, and experience in
Web design and photo and
layout software is beneficial.
Film production coordinators
must have excellent written
and verbal communication
skills, as well as a sharp eye
for detail and keen problem
solving skills
Relatively high median
salary ($65,000, as of
May 2012)**
The work is mainly
office-based, but you
would also visit
studios or locations for
meetings. Location
work could be
anywhere in the UK or
overseas, so you may
need to travel and stay
away from home for
long periods.
Managerial Film director Directors have
overall
responsibility for
the way films or
television
programmers are
made. As a
director, you

• Planning the shooting
schedule and
logistics
• Hiring the cast and crew
• Guiding the technical
crew
• Directing the actors (or
the contributors to a
documentary)
Supervising the editing to
produce the final 'cut'.
This requires skills of group
leadership, as well as the
ability to maintain a singular
focus even in the stressful,
fast-paced environment of
a film set. Moreover it is
necessary to have an
artistic eye to frame shots
and to give precise
feedback to cast and crew,
thus, excellent
communication skills are a
must.

$68,000)*

important they are
happy working
independently for
large parts of the day.

time although there
are often part-time,
job-share and flexible
opportunities
particularly if working
as part of a larger
team.
Creative Costume designers Costume Designers
start working on
films at the
beginning of pre-
production. They
are in charge of
designing, creating,
acquiring and hiring
all costumes for
actors and extras.
This must be
achieved within
strict budgets, and
to tight schedules.
Costume Designers'
work is integral to
defining the overall
'look' of films, and
Designers typically seek
to enhance a
character's personality,
and to create an
evolving plot of color,
changing social status,
or period through the
visual design of
garments and
accessories. They may
distort or enhance the
body—within the
boundaries of the
director's vision. The
designer must ensure
that the designs let the
actor move, as the role
requires.
• Study the script
• Discuss ideas with the
production designer,
director, and make-up,
set and lighting
designers
• Create costume ideas to fit
the production’s design
concept and budget

styles, fabrics and
designs

and the work can sometimes be
demanding.
 listening to customer requirements

relationships with existing customers
in person and via telephone calls and

with potential customers to prospect
for new business;
