Continuity editing flows naturally between shots following conventional rules, while non-continuity editing breaks rules to disorient viewers. The film clip analyzes uses cross-cutting between two houses to trick the audience into thinking the FBI is at the wrong house, surprising and frightening them. Another clip uses montage and lighting changes to convey a character's melancholy over a lost relationship through the Kuleshov effect. A third clip expertly cuts gunshots to the beat of the background music to add comedy and excitement.

Editing in a movie could be continuity or none continuity. Continuity editing is when shots
will flow more conventionally. Shots will flow naturally and follow the rules of editing. None
continuity editing breaks the rules of conventionally editing. The shots do not flow well
which will disorientate the viewer.

This is the first clip I will be analyzing; it’s a clip from silence of the lambs. In this scene
continuity editing and cross cutting is used specifically for the intended effect to
disorientate, fool and trick the audience into thinking the fbi is coming into the house.
The scene starts outside a house in an establishing shot then cuts in to a shot of the interior
of a house. These shots together fool the audience into making the assumption that it’s the
same house. Then a man rings the doorbell outside then we have a cut in to the other house
where the bell is ringing. This further links these shots together. Then when the door opens
and there is the big reveal of the scene where Clarice is the one at the door and the fbi have
the wrong house the audience feel tricked; furthermore, since the shots of the fbi they are
men all grouped together organized armed and with the element of surprise. This is directly
compares them making Clarice look weak and vulnerable. In conclusion the use of cross
cutting in this scene makes the audience feel disorientated and fooled; then instantly makes
them scarred and in suspense for the fate of Carice.

This next clip is from Her; this clip uses the Kuleshov effect to express Theodor’s
(protagonists) emotions. The Kuleshov effect is when two clips are placed together to create
a third meaning. For example, Alfred Hitchcock explained it like this. Take a clip of a woman
with a child then next a clip of an old man looking and smiling, the audience will get the
third meaning that the man is a gentle kind man. However, take the same clip of an old man
looking then smiling but precede it by a clip of a woman sunbathing and the audience will
believe the man is an old creep. The Kuleshov effect is a very effective editing technique
that will make the audience understand the emotion of a character without needing to use
dialogue; in fact, its way more effective than characters using dialogue, show not tell.
In this scene there’s a montage using the Kuleshov effect where we see clips of Theodore
and his ex-wife play fighting, kissing and cuddling. This montage of clips is all brightly lit in a
film that usually uses drab pastels. This montage taken by its self would be really effective in
showing their affection but its preceded and proceeded by shots of Theodore lying alone in

2. bed. As mentioned before the flashbacks are brightly lit whereas the present is dark and
gloomy; this separates the past from present and shows that Theodore was happy before
but isn’t now. The audience can infer that the couple have separated and it’s as if all the
light in his life has been taken away; creating a perpetual melancholy effect and deep
sympathy for Theodore.

This clip from baby driver uses cutting to the beat uniquely and expertly. Cutting to the beat
is where you cut shots so that they match with music in the scene either diegetic or none
diegetic. This makes gives the effect that excites the audience.
In this scene the song Tequila is playing faintly in the background. The music is coming from
the iPod so its diegetic, however it’s been amplified to be in the style of none digenetic.
When the shooting starts the scene is edited in a way that the shooting of the guns matches
the tempo and even the melody of the song; this creates a hybrid of the none diegetic style
of sound with the diegetic sounds of the guns firing. In addition, the quick cuts in this scene
creates an intense atmosphere. This scene could have been edited conventionally but by
cutting to the beat it ads both comedy and excitement to the scene to create excitement
and laughter in the audience.

In this clip from way down east there is a use of parallel editing. Parallel editing is when you
cut between two events. This technique can be used to create a lot of different effects like
suspense and excitement.
In this clip it cuts between: a woman unconscious being guided by the water, a clip of the
edge of the waterfall and a clip of a man running. Using parallel editing in this scene
escalates the tension as we see the woman approaching the drop as the man chases her.
This makes the audience believe she is going to fall if he doesn’t reach her in time creating
suspense in the audience.

This clip is a montage scene from rocky 3. Montage is used in different ways but this type of
montage is used a lot. This type of montage is used to show characters progressing and
getting better at something over a passage of time. It will often use music to sometimes cut
to the beat to excite the audience.
This montage scene is used to show Rocky’s progression; Rocky starts the training and he’s
slow and messy but by the end of the montage he’s fast and precise with his movements.
We see him get slowly get better through the montage which makes the viewer excite to
see the underdog get better.
