Unit 1 and 5
1) Find a definition for your chosen genre:
Definition for Romance: A feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. A
movie that has romance it is talked about how people feel about each other, whether
or not if they are in love. Genre conventions are all the little things, from typical
characters to repeating plot points that separate one genre of fiction from another.
(Sourced from www.wisegeek.com)
The things you expect to see in these films are that there is always someone who falls
in love with another and there will be people breaking up for another person. Where
the movie extents to the point where the whole story is quite a bit messed up,
leaving the audience half confused.
The genre conventions are: main characters, are there any cliff-hangers?
 Age restrictions, appropriate music etc.
Some movies/ films have sub genres this is when the movie has two stories in one
such as a movie talking about one thing and then it shows as a music piece this will
be seen as a sub-genre.
Methods: SECONDARY
Techniques: The techniques I will be using are library; this is
because the research method I will allow me to
look for what I am searching for; which is the
definitions for romance
Information Log: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/romance
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-genre-conventions.
htm
Organisation: I am going to file it on the Haverstock media blog.
This is because all my work must be submitted on
the internet therefore I will only be doing some
draft work in my exercise book.
RAGWANA AKRAM 12C
Relevance: It is useful because I know what ‘romance’ is a
genre and that it will help me understand what my
initial mind map idea is about.
2) What are some of the key films in this genre?
 Grease
 Titanic
 The fault in our stars
 Clueless
 Twilight
 Silver linings playbook
 Pitch perfect
 Romeo and Juliet (1996)
Methods: SECONDARY
Techniques: The techniques I will be using are ‘internet’. This will
help me find which movie has romance in, examples
of a movie would be Titanic, clueless etc.
Information Log: http://www.imdb.com/genre/romance
Organisation: I will be filing it in the Haverstock media blog. This is
where all my work will be uploaded on. I will be
putting this particular work in a timeline folder where
it will be marked.
Relevance: It is relevant to my work because it tells me what the
key films are in this genre.
3) Identifying genre signifiers.
 Props, costumes, colour, main image, music, sound.
In the trailers I have found that the different genre signifiers were that there were lots
of romance and love. This shows that there is the typical man and women falling in
love. For example; the fault in our stars show two both independent young teenagers
RAGWANA AKRAM 12C
who have no interest in anything but soon find love through a support group this
then develops into love. Both people who Starr in this movie have disabilities and are
ill therefore it becomes pretty obvious that they fall in love.
Methods: SECONDARY
Techniques: The techniques I will be using for this is the internet.
This is because i have watched trailers of romance
movies this allows me to analyse the
types of music that was played and if it was
appropriate for the right audience, which it was.
Information Log: www.youtube.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ItBvH5J6ss
Organisation: I will be filing it in the Haverstock media blog. This is
where all my work will be uploaded on. I will be
putting this particular work in a timeline folder where
it will be marked.
Relevance: It is relevant because it has shown me what genre
signifiers meant. It also shows what the movie/ film
will have such as all the props, costumes, etc.
4) Character:
The characters that are portrayed in the trailer 'the fault in our stars' talk about how
their appearance is and the way both characters are different appearance wise. This
allows the audience to see if they are going to get into a relationship. Both
characters use social networking to stay in contact and it shows that they are
developing feeling for each other. However the male character is attached to a pack
of cigarettes this shows that he doesn’t intentionally smoke as he knows it could kill
himself. The other character who is a female always has to carry an oxygen tank with
her. This shows the audience that she is sick and needs this all the time.
The clothes that the two characters wear are casual plain clothes which show us that
they are well laid back and are comfortable. They both have the saying ‘okay' which
show us that they are in love but don't use the typical phrase 'I love you' what we
understand about the characters are that they don't say ' I love you' but we the
audience can tell that they are in love but don't say it as their body language explains
it all.
RAGWANA AKRAM 12C
5) Settings:
The settings that are shown in the trailer 'the fault in our stars' show the scenes of a
hospital, a place in Amsterdam and a nice fancy restaurant. These fit in with the
genre convention because it shows where the setting is placed and how there are
exciting scenes it also shows really good reviews.
6) Narrative:
The audience can tell if there are any narrations if there is a voiceover which talks
through what is happening through the movie. But however some narratives include
the characters talking over the film explaining their thoughts and feeling. Such as the
titanic trailer it shows how the two couples say how they love each other when it
shows how the ship is sinking and this was where they first met. It also shows that in
the beginning of the trailer that there is an old woman claiming that she is the
woman who was alive during the sinking of the titanic.
