• UNEP HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN GEF
WATERS IN THE PILOT PHASE (1991-1994)
AND DURING PHASE I AND PHASE II
(1994 TO PRESENT).

3. UNEP IW Portfolio
As of September 2002, the UNEP/GEF
portfolio in international waters is valued at
US$ 179 million, comprising 11 ongoing
full size projects and 2 ongoing medium-sized
projects.

in International Waters
Facilitation of the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan
Assistance to the African Process through a GEF MSP
Secretariat for many of the Regional Seas Conventions
Past record of successful multi-country and regional
interventions in many fields including Freshwater
Basin management
Implementation of the freshwater EMINWA
programme (Environmentally Sound Management of

UNEP's project portfolio will focus on the
following areas in GEF Phase III:
Integrated Land and Water Resources
Management. UNEP will pilot a mega-regional
ecosystem approach to integrated
land and water resources management for
selected mega-basins.

Integrated drainage basins and coastal zone
management. UNEP will develop a
portfolio of projects that are built on the
guidelines for Integrated Coastal Area and
River Basin Management (ICARM), and

Action for Protection of the Marine
Environment from LBA. UNEP will
develop, in collaboration with the GPA
