GIS for arts outreach: The walls of Philadelphia are covered in murals - more than 2,700 of them. To expose an even wider community to these beautiful resources, the Mural Arts Program developed a GIS-based website, enabling users to find information and photos of murals based on their location in the city.

Philadelphia was one of the first major cities in
America

The City Archives, which are
maintained by the Department of
Records

Contain approximately 2 million photographs chronicling
the last 150 years of the city’s history

They document and illustrate the city’s growth and
development…

They demonstrate the city’s history through glimpses
into major events…

Demonstrating in some instances just how much has
changed…

and in others, how much, despite looking a little
different…

And each of these images is intimately tied to a location

Providing a
historical record
not just of a time
or an event but
also of the place
where it was
taken.

These images, and the stories they tell, are the
foundation up which PhillyHistory.org was developed.

Our story starts here, in the City Archives, where the image
collection presented several challenges…

The first of which was
ORGANIZATION. With
images stored in
boxes based on the
city unit they
represented (Streets,
Schools, etc.), finding
any particular image
was a significant
challenge.

The second was PRESERVATION. The oldest negatives are
combustible, and newer ones are prone to warping.

The third was ACCESS. To access an image, a visitor would have
to go to the archives and have a valid research reason for
entrance. Approximately 100 people per year did this.

The last was FUNDING. Addressing these challenges was
unlikely to be an inexpensive endeavor.

Museums continue to increase the dedication of their resources to the digitization of the art works in their possession in order to share their collections with a greater audience. As technology has advanced, so too has the ability of museums to visualize and display their exhibitions digitally in 3-D. In an effort to show not only their art works but also the exhibitions themselves, museums have made an investment in a variety of 3-D technologies that enable their staff to design, curate, plan, and share their exhibits.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...

Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security. Paper Link: https://eprint.iacr.org/2024/257
