UNDERSTANDING THE POLITICAL WORLD WRITING INTENSIVE PAPER ASSIGNMENT In a well-written, concise paper, trace the process of CREATION, MAINTENANCE, and DECAY in ONE (1) of the following systems: 1) The Khmer Rouge (Democratic Kampuchea) 2) The Kingdom of Madagascar. 3) The Republic of Texas. 4) The British in India. 5) The Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. If you would like to examine a different system, you must get permission first. It is important to note that I am not looking for an historical account of these systems, i.e., what happened and when. I am looking for an analysis of why. Of course it will be necessary to include historical facts in your analysis, but the focus should be on the process of creation, maintenance, and decay. The following questions can be used as a guide: CREATION: 1) What were the old social facts that no longer worked? 2) What were the human needs and why weren't they being satisfied. 3) By what means were the new institutions established, by revolution, elections, an alliance? MAINTENANCE: 1) What were the institutions that maintained the system? 2) Who controlled them? 3) How were they enforced? DECAY: 1) What led to decay? That is, what was it about the old institutions that led to their failure? 2) What were the new human needs that the old institutions could not meet? The final paper should be typed, double spaced, and between 12-14 pages in length. It must include an introduction, a conclusion, and subtitles. There must be notes where appropriate, a bibliography, and a title page. Try not to fill your bibliography with the same type of source. For example, newspaper articles, weekly magazines such as Time, encyclopedias and the Internet are good for obtaining general background information, but should not be relied upon exclusively. Your main sources should be scholarly, in-depth analytic works. Since many of you may not have written a paper of such length before, the assignment will be broken up into three parts corresponding to the above sections. That is, over the course of the semester you will hand in three 4 page papers dealing with creation, maintenance and decay respectively. In addition, second drafts of each section will also be required. The final paper will thus consist of the following: a title page, an introduction, the creation section, the maintenance section, the decay section, a conclusion and a bibliography. Course Goals:
This course will examine the experience of sports and leisure for different groups of Americans (e.g., African-Americans, women, working class), from colonial times to the present but primarily focused on the 20th century. My goal is to introduce students to historical analysis and argument through the examination of the sports and leisure time activities that won increasing popularity among Americans from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This course will incorporate analytical categories from social history (class, race, gender, ethnicity) as well as the frameworks used by cultural, economic, and political history. This course will thus involve students in gaining a better understanding of the relationships that sports and leisure have with the social, economic, cultural and political forces at work in the United States and the world. Students will appreciate the issues that have affected sports participation over the years, including racial and gender discrimination, class economics, and commercialization.
Students are expected to learn not only the basic data of American social history of sports but also to express that knowledge in oral and written argument that employs evidence to prove historical theses. Precise assignments for discussion are given at the end of this syllabus. Students will also be expected to use the Blackboard site for discussion. The title page needs to adhere to the APA format required by the University. There is a sample of an APA formatted title page in the Writing Center. For the title page, create an interesting and catchy title that motivates your audience to read your paper.
Introduction (1 page)
Your paper’s introduction should include the background or history of your chosen event, why the topic is important to research and analyze, and your thesis.
First, the introduction should provide a bit of background for your reader. Do not assume your reader knows about the topic and its history. Share with your reader the time and place that the event occurred and provide a little background. Include a brief review of what led up to the event, why it was such a significant or historic moment, who it involved, etc.
Then, add in the introduction why this is an important topic for research and analysis both for current and future concerns.
Finally, the thesis is the main point of your paper. You should consider your objective (what is the main point you want your reader to remember), consider your audience, and make the thesis connect to what will be covered in your paper. Since the Final Research Paper specifically requires that you discuss how the event influenced human behavior, human expression, and ethics, your thesis should reflect this.

the idea of independence. You should now understand the relationship between political
principles and the Declaration of Independence. Use the information you learned in the lesson
to create your own modern day Common Sense pamphlet that explains how the Declaration
of Independence upholds the principles of popular sovereignty, social contract, and natural
and individual rights.
Steps
1. Use this Pamphlet Template or a Web 2.0 tool to create your six-panel pamphlet.
2. There are many 21st century tools available for creating and submitting your work
in the online environment. For more information on the tools your school uses,

3. The first panel should be the title panel. Include your name, date, instructor, and a title for
the pamphlet.
4. On the second panel, write a one-paragraph overview of the Declaration of

“Go all the way back to Sumerian civilization,” Bill Clinton instructed a crow of global jet-setters at the 2011 World Economic Forum in Davos, “and you’ll see that every successful civilization builds institutions that work, that lift people up and reward people for their greatness. Then, if you look at every one of those civilization, all those institutions that benefited people get long in the tooth. They get creaky. The people ruling them become more interested in holding on to power than the purpose they were designed for. Chris Hayes, in The Twilight of the Elites, examines what he calls the “near total failure of each pillar institution of our [American] society” (1). The book came out four years ago, in 2012, and looks at events in what he calls the “fail decade,” from 2000-2010 and just beyond.

The source is from Chinese literature and the study will mainly be aimed at finding a connection between the micro source and the macro source. The micro source will detail the source as an individual case whereas the macro will analyze the source as a large historical development. This will enable the reader to augment their understanding on the time and place where the source was written and further elucidate their understanding on both conventional and contemporary history. The question that will be posed by this study is; ‘how was the ancient Chinese administration structured and how did this influence the future Chinese administration structure?” (on the first part here, talk about the source more than just talking about the publisher of the book. It would be in the first paragraph of the source, who wrote the source (Announcement of the Duke of Shao) and why? when it was written and what is the purpose of it? Also talk a little bit about the Zhou dynasty and how it is related? Do some research outside the source use google or what so ever. To get an idea about some questions above here are some answers: we don’t know who wrote it, it was from somebody to his boss. The purpose of it was to report the building of the capital city. Use those answers but also go in details. Also remove the historical question to the paragraph when you talk about what happened and after you collect all the information, then ask the question.) There are so many considerations in making ethical decisions, but what consideration is most important? Different cultures and ethical systems have produced theories that favor one consideration over others. The consideration that a theory favors is called a Fundamental Moral Unit, or FMU.
Many of the classical Western philosophers from the Greek and roman traditions favor the individual as the Fundamental Moral Unit. In these theories, the primary dictate is a negative statement: Don’t get in an individual’s way in his or her pursuit of the good life.
Feminist theories tend to determine the best choice based on how well those choices strengthen the connections among people and how well the needs of the most vulnerable are addressed. The fundamental moral unit here is relationship between people and is based on the belief that care should be given to those who can’t take care of themselves.
Some Eastern theories promote the overall good of the community first and foremost. And some indigenous theories stress human’s connection with the world as a whole, with all natural systems and species having an equal right to co-exist. People who grow up in these traditions expect that they and others will sacrifice individual self-interest for the good of the group and the environment. The Fundamental Moral Unit here is called "aggregate good."
Let’s consider a decision you might encounter if you were a member of your local city council. There is a 50 acre parcel of land in your city’s jurisdiction that was designated a hundred years ago to remain open space. Now the area contains some ancient Native burial grounds, but the tribe members a hundred years and tribe members today are happy with the designated use as long as the woodlands around the burial mounds stay intact. A developer would like to build a shopping mall there. As a city council member, you get to decide how that land will be used today: should it remain a park or become a shopping mall?
If you make your choice based only on the good that comes to individuals, you might be tempted to go with the shopping mall. The mall will provide jobs for many of the people in the community who are out of work and the additional income from the taxes from the new property owner and the businesses will allow the city to reduce taxes for individual home owners.
Which choice best advances the overall good of the community in which I live? The policy choice made previously to protect the land respected human connections to natural systems and was sensitive to the culture and history of a minority group. Affirming that decision helps all people in the community maintain trust in government.
We can see how the teachings from all of these traditions can help us in analyzing an important choice. And they can help us answer one more question: Can I find a choice that doesn’t cause harm to anyone or anything? If a shopping mall is a good idea for the .

This course will examine the experience of sports and leisure for different groups of Americans (e.g., African-Americans, women, working class), from colonial times to the present but primarily focused on the 20th century. My goal is to introduce students to historical analysis and argument through the examination of the sports and leisure time activities that won increasing popularity among Americans from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This course will incorporate analytical categories from social history (class, race, gender, ethnicity) as well as the frameworks used by cultural, economic, and political history. This course will thus involve students in gaining a better understanding of the relationships that sports and leisure have with the social, economic, cultural and political forces at work in the United States and the world. The title page needs to adhere to the APA format required by the University. There is a sample of an APA formatted title page in the Writing Center. For the title page, create an interesting and catchy title that motivates your audience to read your paper.

Your paper’s introduction should include the background or history of your chosen event, why the topic is important to research and analyze, and your thesis.
First, the introduction should provide a bit of background for your reader. Do not assume your reader knows about the topic and its history. Share with your reader the time and place that the event occurred and provide a little background. Include a brief review of what led up to the event, why it was such a significant or historic moment, who it involved, etc.
Then, add in the introduction why this is an important topic for research and analysis both for current and future concerns.
Finally, the thesis is the main point of your paper. You should consider your objective (what is the main point you want your reader to remember), consider your audience, and make the thesis connect to what will be covered in your paper. There are so many considerations in making ethical decisions, but what consideration is most important? Different cultures and ethical systems have produced theories that favor one consideration over others. The consideration that a theory favors is called a Fundamental Moral Unit, or FMU.
Many of the classical Western philosophers from the Greek and roman traditions favor the individual as the Fundamental Moral Unit. In these theories, the primary dictate is a negative statement: Don’t get in an individual’s way in his or her pursuit of the good life.
Feminist theories tend to determine the best choice based on how well those choices strengthen the connections among people and how well the needs of the most vulnerable are addressed. The fundamental moral unit here is relationship between people and is based on the belief that care should be given to those who can’t take care of themselves.
Some Eastern theories promote the overall good of the community first and foremost. And some indigenous theories stress human’s connection with the world as a whole, with all natural systems and species having an equal right to co-exist. People who grow up in these traditions expect that they and others will sacrifice individual self-interest for the good of the group and the environment. The Fundamental Moral Unit here is called "aggregate good."
Let’s consider a decision you might encounter if you were a member of your local city council. There is a 50 acre parcel of land in your city’s jurisdiction that was designated a hundred years ago to remain open space. Now the area contains some ancient Native burial grounds, but the tribe members a hundred years and tribe members today are happy with the designated use as long as the woodlands around the burial mounds stay intact. A developer would like to build a shopping mall there. As a city council member, you get to decide how that land will be used today: should it remain a park or become a shopping mall?
If you make your choice based only on the good that comes to individuals, you might be tempted to go with the shopping mall. The mall will provide jobs for many of the people in the community who are out of work and the additional income from the taxes from the new property owner and the businesses will allow the city to reduce taxes for individual home owners.
Which choice best advances the overall good of the community in which I live? The policy choice made previously to protect the land respected human connections to natural systems and was sensitive to the culture and history of a minority group. Affirming that decision helps all people in the community maintain trust in government.

The objective of this video is to introduce students to the fundamental attribution error and its implications. One implication is that we often have a tendency to judge others unfairly because we do not take into account the situational factors that may have caused them to make unethical decisions. We jump to the conclusion that they are bad people because they did a bad thing. That said, it is important to remember that situational factors are usually explanations for while people err, they are not excuses. The best way to avoid this error, experts say, it to put ourselves in the shoes of others and try to envision the pressures they might have faced.
The other implication of the fundamental attribution error is that we may be too easy on ourselves, if we are not careful. We may too readily find situational factors, organizational pressures and the like and then simply excuse our own conduct.
The fundamental attribution error is the tendency to attribute "causes of behavior to actors (i.e., internal, dispositional factors) rather than the situation (i.e., external, environmental factors." We see that other people have done bad things, and we assume that it is because of their character rather than the fact that they were, perhaps, striving so hard to please their superiors that they did not even notice the ethical issue that they flubbed.
According to some psychologists, the other side of the coin from the fundamental attribution error is the actor-observer bias which is people’s tendency to over-emphasize the role of the situation in their own behaviors. They insist there’s nothing wrong with their character, because their errors are accounted for by some situational factor—the boss’s pressure, the need to feed their families, etc.
Francesca Gino writes: "In particular, one mistake we systematically make is known as the correspondence bias. When making attributions as we evaluate others, we tend to ascribe too little influence to the situation and too much to their dispositions. In simpler terms, we tend to believe that people’s behavior reflects their unique dispositions and skills, when many times it actually reflects aspects of the situation in which they find themselves." This sounds a lot like a different name for the fundamental attribution error.

- 1. UNDERSTANDING THE POLITICAL WORLD WRITING INTENSIVE PAPER ASSIGNMENT In a well-written, concise paper, trace the process of CREATION, MAINTENANCE, and DECAY in ONE (1) of the following systems: 1) The Khmer Rouge (Democratic Kampuchea) 2) The Kingdom of Madagascar. 3) The Republic of Texas. 4) The British in India. 5) The Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. If you would like to examine a different system, you must get permission first. It is important to note that I am not looking for an historical account of these systems, i.e., what happened and when. I am looking for an analysis of why. Of course it will be necessary to include historical facts in your analysis, but the focus should be on the process of creation, maintenance, and decay. The following questions can be used as a guide: CREATION: 1) What were the old social facts that no longer worked? 2) What were the human needs and why weren't they being satisfied. 3) By what means were the new institutions established, by revolution, elections, an alliance? MAINTENANCE: 1) What were the institutions that maintained the system?
- 2. 2) Who controlled them? 3) How were they enforced? DECAY: 1) What led to decay? That is, what was it about the old institutions that led to their failure? 2) What were the new human needs that the old institutions could not meet? The final paper should be typed, double spaced, and between 12-14 pages in length. It must include an introduction, a conclusion, and subtitles. There must be notes where appropriate, a bibliography, and a title page. Try not to fill your bibliography with the same type of source. For example, newspaper articles, weekly magazines such as Time, encyclopedias and the Internet are good for obtaining general background information, but should not be relied upon exclusively. Your main sources should be scholarly, in-depth analytic works. Since many of you may not have written a paper of such length before, the assignment will be broken up into three parts corresponding to the above sections. That is, over the course of the semester you will hand in three 4 page papers dealing with creation, maintenance and decay respectively. In addition, second drafts of each section will also be required. The final paper will thus consist of the following: a title page, an introduction, the creation section, the maintenance section, the decay section, a conclusion and a bibliography. The assignment dates are as follows: Creation: 1st Draft: Monday, 2/10. 2nd Draft: Monday, 2/24. Maintenance: 1st Draft: Monday, 3/16. 2nd Draft: Monday, 3/30.
- 3. Decay: 1st Draft: Wednesday, 4/8. 2nd Draft: Monday, 4/20. Final paper: Wednesday, 4/29. These deadlines must be adhered to. A half grade deduction (for the entire paper) will be assessed for each deadline missed! And the final paper will not be accepted after 4/29! Although these deadlines must be adhered to, I will continue to accept voluntary drafts of each section even after that section deadline has passed, or, section drafts prior to the respective due dates. I encourage you to hand in as many drafts as possible in addition to the ones required. Plagiarism will be dealt with severely and in accordance with the rules outlined in the Caldwell University Undergraduate Catalog.
