This document discusses information literacy, technology literacy, and evidence-based practice. It defines information literacy as the ability to recognize information needs, locate and evaluate information sources critically, and apply information effectively. Technology literacy involves using technology to gather, organize, analyze, and report information. Evidence-based practice in nursing uses a process similar to information literacy to improve clinical practice by asking questions, acquiring evidence, appraising sources, and applying findings.

Information
Literacy?
As defined by the Association
of College and Research
Libraries, an information
literate individual is able to:
• Recognize the extent of
information needed
• Locate the needed
information effectively and
efficiently
• Evaluate information and
its sources critically and
incorporate selected
information into one’s
knowledge base
• Use information effectively
to accomplish a specific
purpose
• Understand the
economic, legal, and social
issues surrounding the use
of information, and access
and use information
ethically and legally

3. Why is IL important?
 Data Smog-We live in the Information Age.There are more
sources of information available than ever.
(books, journals, newspapers, internet, subscription
databases, social media, etc.)
 Because of all of the resources available to users finding the
right information is harder not easier.
 Employers want employees that have developed critical
thinking and reasoning skills
 Information Literacy is a life long skill.

4. Who needs information literacy?
 Students -in order to achieve academically.
 Teachers Lecturers- who want to carry out their
jobs more efficiently and successfully.
 Everyone- To enable informed decision making.
 Purchasing any item
 Making an investment
 Voting in an election

5. What is Technology literacy?
 Technology literacy is often used synonymously
with Computer literacy
 Technology literacy is the ability to
gather, organize analyze and report information
using technology.

6. Evidence-Based Practice in
Nursing(EBP)
The process of asking, acquiring, appraising, and applying the
best evidence from nursing and medical literature to improve
the quality of clinical practice.
• Ask: Formulate an answerable question from an information
need
• Acquire: Identify articles and other evidence-based
resources that answer the question
• Appraise: Search results for validity and usefulness
• Apply: Findings to your clinical practice and evaluate your
professional performance
