The Similarities between Angelina Jolie and Beowulf Essay
Throughout time, heroes have stereotypically been described as men who possess qualities such
as courage, strength, leadership, and determination. Certainly, many of these characteristics have
changed as time has passed. In modern society, heroes can simply be average people who
sacrifice their own happiness for the welfare of others and do their best to create a change in the
world. Beowulf, an extraordinary warrior in the Anglo Saxon period, is an epic herobecause of his
pride, strength and courage. He fought many battles in order to protect the Danes from chaos.
Angelina Jolie, like Beowulf, is a hero because she defeats every impediment to help and fight
against inequality. Heroes do not wait still in one place.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He did not give up while fighting with the brawny monster Grendel, even though Grendel clutched
at [him] with his claws (Beowulf 428). According to Milena Veselinovico, the author of leading
women, Angelina Jolie has risked her life to protect refugees in many countries in Africa. She went
to Sudan during a tremendous conflict and Chad during the civil war. She could have been
assassinated, but her thirst of justice could not be sate easily; she kept helping no matter the
circumstances. In able to be a hero, one must be internally strong to triumph obstacles life brings
and never back down when conflicts arrive.
Heroes often combat injustice to win equality and peace. Beowulf saves the Danes by fighting the
monster Grendel, but Angelina Jolie saves refugees by fighting the figurative monster of
inequality. In the mead hall, the place the Anglo Saxon warriors celebrated their battles, everyone
was terrified to fight Grendel because he was powerful and seemingly undefeatable. Beowulf
fought the abominable beast and obtained the glory of tranquility for the Danes because he wanted
to live in greatness and courage (368 369). Angelina Jolie keeps fighting with the invincible
monster of inequality that is happening in some parts of Africa and gives part of her fortune to
refugees who suffer from hunger and persecution. A hero does not need to fight a monster,
sometimes the injustice is the monster itself.

Stockholm Syndrome Research Paper
A teenager is taken from her home in early morning. She is so scared that she does exactly what
the kidnapper says and follows him out. As the months go by, the victim and her kidnapper
develop a very close bond and they begin to care for each other in a nurturing relationship. This
situation probably sounds insane, but it turns out that this happens often to a victim. The victim
becomes relieved after the kidnapper threatens her and decides to spare her life. The victim begins
to feel gratitude because the kidnapper has given her life and the kidnapper sees it at a real bond
forming. Even though the victim wants to despise the kidnapper for taking her hostage, her longing
to survive overpowers her hatred and Stockholm Syndrome is developed.... Show more content on

The hostages do not fully understand what has happened and why they do not hate the
kidnappers. They begin to wonder what could have caused them to have sympathy or to favor
the kidnapper. It is very had for the former hostage to get a complete answer of exactly why the
condition occurs because it is very complicated and hard to understand. Over the years of
studying the psychological condition, several factors have been discovered. The hostages begin
to think of the kidnapper in a more positive way after they are given a good place to stay or even
after the kidnapper gives an act of kindness by not killing the hostage but simply injuring them.
The hostages begin to sympathize for the captor or develop a relationship once they begin to
understand what might have made the kidnapper do this crime, and after living with each other
for a long period of time, they realize how much they have in common. Stockholm Syndrome
normally occurs because the hostages feel that they must pretend to be on the kidnapper s side or
even do acts of kindness for them so that the kidnappers are less likely to harm them or kill them.
After the long period of pretending, they begin to believe that it is the right thing to do and they
fall into practice of it. After they develop this condition, they have symptoms of the following:
resisting attempts of rescue, defending the captor, refusing to testify against captor or running away
from them and they become in need of treatment. Treatment is key to adjusting to the life the
captive had before the hostage event. Obtaining counselling from psychiatrists and guidance
counselors can be very effective to help the former hostage remember how life was before and why
they are having these feelings which can help make the feelings go away. Support from family
members and friends and talking about the situation with them can help the former hostage to

Summary Of Edward Morgan Forster sThe Machine Stops
As our society continues to develop, the advanced technology has changed people s lives in many
respects. When people enjoy the convenience of using touchpad during class, contacting a person
who lives a thousand miles away via FaceTime, and storing live data in the online cloud, there will
be a long term and serious consequences resulting from overuse of technology. About a century ago,
Edward Morgan Forster, in his short novel The Machine Stops, has already accurately predicted
humans future through presenting an image of how human s exponentially increasing dependence
on technology makes them weak, and ultimately decease. The story happens in the future where
human beings who has lost their ability to live on the surface of earth live in a subterranean cell,
with all physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs met by the Machine. With the Machine, people
believe they live in a perfect world. All of the people believe they live in a perfect world, except
Kuno, who finds the flaw that can destroy the society. Kuno s concern is treated as madness by his
mother Vashti. Forster s theme concerns envisioning the earth in the future when the use of
technology is at its climax and every sphere of life is dependent on it. He exploits his idea by
illustrating that the development of the sophisticated technology will ultimately control human
beings and annihilate their ability to think critically and live independently, making them treat the
Machine like a god. Therefore, through

The Torture Of Torture Hitchens Summary
In Hitchens s story, the majority of his detail is dedicated to his personal experience. Hitchens
was brave enough to actually forbearance the torture of waterboarding. I was very gentle yet
firmly grabbed from behind, pulled to my feet, pinioned by my wrist (which were then cuffed to
a belt), and cut off from sunlight by having a black hood pulled over my face. (Hitchens, page
617). At this time, the trained men are starting to put Hitchens in the first steps of the torture.
Arms already lost to me, I wasn t able to flail as I pushed onto a sloping board and positioned
with my head lower than my heart. (Hitchens, page 617). Hitchens has been placed into position
to where he cannot move, or try to fight the integrator s, to start the torturing. This is when the
water starts getting poured onto his face. The fear of drowning is an understatement when it
comes to water boarding, because drowning is actually taking place. He began to hold is breath,
for as long as he could, before having to exhale. With exhaling comes inhaling, and when he
inhaled, the hood pulled over his face began to suction to his face. The inhalation brought the
damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge, wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly
clamped over my face. (Hitchens, page 618). Basically, what he is saying is that the suctioning of
the hood is making it even harder to attempt to breath. With all of this being said, Hitchens did not
last long before using the pre arranged

The War on Drugs Essay
The War on Drugs
To fully understand the significance and the seriousness of a War one must first fully understand
the reasons that caused it in the first place. In this specific case the solution begins with several
important yet seemingly simple questions...What is marijuana? How is it used? And why is it so
coveted and widely distributed in Jamaica as well as the rest of the world?... All these questions
help clarify the reasoning behind the war on drugs and further investigation shows how Jamaica
ends up being an important country in this puzzle as well. Lets begin with the first question, (What
is marijuana), of course the dictionary definition is simply put, a preparation of the hemp plant,
Cannabis sativa, for use as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the longer a substance has been illegal and the harder it is to obtain the substance the
more profitable it becomes. Therefore, marijuana (because it fits into this category) can be a
very profitable in its import and export for a country even if it is outlawed as illegal. One
country that has struggled endlessly with this drug, its illegal usage, and decriminalization is
Jamaica. Using Jamaica as a model for the more in depth study of the war against drugs proves to
be most interesting in that Jamaica has had a long and economically fluctuating history with
marijuana. Henceforth, to lead us into the study of Jamaica and its legalization and decimalization
of marijuana that can be used on both a large and small scale we turn to a reliable inside source of
Jamaican journalist. Where they discover that the strong marijuana presence in Jamaica has been an
issue which has sparked some controversy and questioning, regarding the decriminalization of
marijuana amongst not only Jamaicans but people all over the world. Many people have asked the
question, how can marijuana be so abundant and openly used in a country and yet not be legal or at
least decriminalized? Jamaican journalists, through research, surveys, and most importantly
experiences with the culture itself, address in a special and unique way the issue of marijuana and
how it has been related differently to the varying

Counselling Psychotherapy And Psychodynamic Perspectives
Introduction I am developing an understanding of two of the most utilised approaches in
counselling psychotherapy. These are the person centered and psychodynamic perspectives. I
seek to explore my development and attunement to the concepts we have been introduced to by
facilitating my own learning. Also I isolate difficulties that have arisen and explain how I have
overcome these obstacles. This will aid my continual development towards becoming a helper.
This piece is my own reflexive account on my journey so far. In my development to date, and
the feelings of achievement and failure through actions of my early adolescence. Becoming a
helper is a longstanding ambition of mine, formulated by my desire to help others. My
experiences over the last twenty five years, have taught me that I am sometimes over analytical
in my thoughts, overly concerned about others, I can end up neglecting myself. Throughout this
journey I have had chronic ups and downs life can harbor. I continue to develop my own sense
of self, and pursue the opportunity to guide others through their own dialogue. Narrative of the
self I recall when I was younger I was insistent on helping my mum and dad look after my two
brothers. This could be because I m the eldest of three. I am a daughter and sister. My youngest

Tony Blair, Socialism, Liberalism And Conservatism
Currently, three prominent ideologies dominate the governing style of the world today: socialism,
liberalism and conservatism. Many political groups and leaders often follow or claim to follow a
specific ideology. On the other side of the spectrum for those who follow one ideology specific,
there are some individuals that knowingly or unknowingly that follow none and focus on
practicality of ideas. Those individuals are referred to as pragmatist. According to Encyclopædia
Britannica, pragmatism is based on the principle that emphasis on the usefulness, workability, and
practicality of ideas, policies, and proposals ( Pragmatism , n.d). Basically, a pragmatist would focus

In Tony Blairs Socialist Manifesto (1994), he reinvents the idea of social ism in order to fit the
ideology to the world since the economic and social interests of people are constantly evolving.
After World War II, the economy became a lot more global, the service industry grew and there has
been an increase in human rights movements as the public have been less progressive. Aligned with
the ideas of socialism , Blair supports a concept called the Third Way which is based on the idea
of combining center right economics and center left social policies ( The Third Way , n.d).The
idea was developed by Anthony Giddens, the sociologist and director of the London School of
Economics, he argued that the reformist governments could no longer rely only on the ideas of
complete social and economic state control in the face of the forces and finances of
globalization. Therefore, Giddens proposed an idea that would support center policies, but also
remain committed to radical measures. Blair refers to the third way as his version of socialism
which is in favor of economic growth and entrepreneurship as well greater state intervention to
improve social justice and equality among civilians ( UK Politics: What is the Third Way, n.d.).
Using the ideas of the third way, Blair reformed the Labour Party and their ideas. Under his
leadership, the Labour Party became the New Labour Party with a

William Edward Burghardt s The Souls Of Black Folk
William Edward Burghardt, also known as W. E. B. Du Bois, was a civil rights activist, journalist,
educator, and an American sociologist among many other things. In addition, Du Bois was an
author of an extremely influential book, The Souls of Black Folk. Published in 1903, the Civil
Rights Movement was merely at its peak when this occurred. Not only molding a form of
sociology, Du Bois acted and performed in the movement inevitably.
W.E.B. Du Bois lived from February 23rd, 1868 to August 27th, 1963 which is when he passed
away in Accra, Ghana. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a European
American town. Due to this type of environment, Du Bois identified himself as a mulatto and
surprisingly enough, attended schools with whites and was supported by his white teachers. In
1885, he and his family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Du Bois attended Fisk University
and earned his bachelor s degree, along with attending Harvard and receiving a master s degree.
Ten years after the move to Nashville, Du Bois was the first African American to earn a Ph.D.
from Harvard. During his attendance at Harvard, Du Bois studied abroad at the University of
Berlin. The year of 1897 was the same year that Du Bois became a professor at Atlanta University.
In 1899, which was only two years later, Du Bois published the first case study of an African
American community, The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study. Coincidentally, DuBois publicly
opposed Booker T.

Essay on Eiffel tower
Eiffel tower Just imagine you are standing 300 meters that is 984 ft above the ground, looking
down at the beautiful city of Paris. The wind is blowing at your face and it is messing up your
hair, but you do not care. You are on the top of the highest building in the center of culture, the
magnificent Paris and that is all that matters. Yes, you are standing on top of EiffelTower. This is
the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Paris, the tall, lean tower. But have
you ever wonder what would a symbol of Paris be if Eiffel Tower were never built? When you

In spite of their appearance, these massive spans serve no practical function. They are strictly
ornamental and do not help support the structure, which was the first object built to withstand the
forces of the wind as well as gravity. Only now, more than one hundred years later, can we see the
tower in context. It has aged gracefully and no longer stands in contrast to the ornate architecture
that has survived in modern Paris. Once the exposition was over, plans were made to destroy the
Eiffel Tower. The monument that brought so much displeasure because it represented that which
was modern, new, and very un Parisian, was actually saved by technological advances. Engineers
realized that the structure would make a perfect broadcasting tower.
The tower gets its name from Gustave Eiffel, the man who designed the monument, and also did
the girder work for the Statue of Liberty now in New York harbor. Looking at its open frame, it
comes as no surprise that Eiffel was a bridge engineer when he entered the competition along
with 100 other people to design this lasting monument to French culture. In fact, it took just two
years and 300 steel workers for it to reach its pre television height of 984 feet. The construction
work began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31 1889. In spite of this height, the Eiffel
Tower has just four floors. All are served by specially designed elevators that, instead of running
up a vertical track, move along a curve dictated by the

Mother To Son
The Message From A Mother To Son In the poem, Mother To Son Langston Hughes uses the
concept of symbolism in order to display the arduous upbringing that he had encountered as an
African American in society. Specifically, Hughes uses the style of a mother telling her story of
hardship to her son, in order to add a personal reflection on his troubles in life. Hughes compares
the ups and downs of growing up, to that of a stair by first indicating that life, ain t been no
crystal stair but had, tacks splinters and torn up boards (1 5). The symbol of a crystal stair is a
perfect life, which is completely smooth with no obstacles or other interferences. Tacks, which are

The Change Is Unexpected Or Planned Departure Of A Chief...
Every nonprofit organization undergoes leadership changes at some point. Whether the change is
unexpected or planned, it can result in a period of dangerous organizational uncertainty or offer
opportunities for greater accomplishments. Without a transition plan in place, a sudden or planned
departure of a chief executive officer, chief financial officer or other upper managementofficial can
seriously degrade the performance of a nonprofit organization. Experienced transition leadership and
adequate planning will minimize disruption and maintain the mission of the organization, as well
as offer the possibilities of further growth and development.
More than 3,000 executives of nonprofit organizations participated in a national study conducted
by CompassPoint and the Meyer Foundation in 2011 (Cornelius, Moyers, Bell, 2011, p. 2). Sixty
seven percent of these executives indicated they plan on leaving their organizations within five
years (See Table). In addition, this survey revealed that despite 15 years of attention to the issue, a
number of key practices associated with effective executive transition are not widespread.
Executives and boards are still reluctant to talk proactively about succession and just 17% of
organizations have a documented succession plan (Cornelius et al., 2011, p. 3).
When adding unexpected executive departures to these statistics, the ramifications of insufficient
transitional planning are alarming. It was reported in the news

Regulations For The Army Of The United States
Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States The Blue Book Barron
Friedrich Wilhelm Steuben wrote the regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the
United States in the winter of 1778. The Continental Army spent that winter at Valley Forge under
the command of General George Washington. The army was a group of raw untrained farmers and
to this point in the war had perfected only one militarymaneuver, the retreat. The true history of the
Barron s military experience is in question. For the beleaguered Continental Armythe Barron and
what became to be known as the U.S. Army s blue book of drill and ceremony could not have
come at a more crucial time for General Washington and his army. The overall idea of the Barron
s regulations for the army was to bring standardization of how the army performed every aspect
of their daily life. The idea of standardization to any army is paramount to its success. The
Continental Army at this point had very little if any among its ranks. It is very important for an
army to march the same, shot the same, dress the same and to become a group that acts as one.
Doing all these exercises together not only creates a cohesive unit but also a feeling of Esprit De
Corps a feeling of connection from one soldier to another it binds them to one another. An army

Comparing Max Bohm s Painting The Happy Mother And Child
Both the painting featured above have a common theme of Motherhood. They both picture a
smiling mother holding their child to their chest. The painting on the left is called The Happy
Mother; it was created by Max Bohm in 1913, and is currently located at the Smithsonian
American Art Museum. The Painting on the right is Mother and Child, and was made by Werner
Drewes at an unknown date and is also located in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In
terms of line and shape, color, texture and pattern, and unity and variety, Bohm s paint is much
more pleasing to the eye than Drewes piece. Max Bohm was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1868, but
spent much of his life living overseas in Europe. He studied AcadГ©mie Julian in Paris and later
won a gold medal from the Paris Salon for one of his paintings in 1898. He later taught at school in
London until he returned to the States in 1911. He now has paintings in many museums, including

Omnivore s Dilemma Vs Blue Future
The sources of food and water problems are vast. Some of the sources are using corn as an
alternative to feeding animals such as cows and pigs. As Michael Pollan states in his book, The
Omnivore s Dilemma, corn was being mass produced after world war II after there were
weapons of mass destruction with high nitrogen content that were the used as fertilizers. The
issues mentioned in The Omnivore s Dilemma and Blue Future by Maude Barlow share the
same amount of issues in water and ability of the government to regulate farming practices and
companies that are leading to these issues. Both books mention the major source of water loss as
mass production of crops and meat. I was astonished by how accurate this course was to what I
experienced. Especially after Barlow was explaining the issues with water and after we saw a
movie that depicted what people were experiencing in Kenya. I remember the struggles with
electricity and water when I was living in Ethiopia. Water was essential in that region, Egypt

Jurassic Park, By John Hammond Essay
From the very first, Welcome to Jurassic Park, given by John Hammond, audiences have been
captivated with the idea of dinosaurs. Steven Spielberg s Jurassic Park series has a plethora of
strong female characters, from Dr. Ellie Sattler to the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex herself. In 2015,
the blockbuster film Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow, hit theaters, adding itself to the
dinosaurlineage. The plot takes place twenty two years after the first film.
The park has now reopened, and there is no room for error, especially with the women depicted in
the movie. Jurassic Park has a reputation of giving audiences strong female characters both human
and dinosaur. With Jurassic World comes a whole set of new characters, new creatures, and new
couture. However, despite modern advances with feminism, Jurassic World does not quite meet the
standards Jurassic Park first presented in 1993. While World definitely does have feminist
attributes, and even has elements of the femme fatale, the film takes a long step backwards from
the first film.
Fans from the beginning of the series will automatically know that all the dinosaurs in
Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are female. They will also remember Ian Malcolm s realization:
God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates
dinosaurs, which is quickly followed up by Ellie saying, Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the
Earth, followed by a worried look from Malcolm and a smile

Competition Between Groups Over Land And Basic Resources
As long as humans have been alive and able to communicate, there has been competition between
groups. While this may have begun with competition over land and basic resources, competition
between groups has developed into a complex social structure. After some time, one group comes
out on top. This dominant group then has a self validated foundation of which to build
discriminatory acts. The dominant group has one or more desirable traits or resources that the
minority groupdoes not have, so this dominant group believes itself to be superior to the minority
group. This structure of competition has led to hate, discrimination, and violence between groups.
Group competition did not end over a battle over resources and land. Groups have found more
ambiguous ways to identify themselves as superior. Disagreements between groups over values,
religious beliefs, and traditions have led to discrimination, violence, war, and genocide. Romans
killed Christians because Romans believed Christians were religious fanatics. Sunnis and Shi ites
have fought since Muhammad s death over who they believed was the rightful predecessor. German
Nazis annihilated six million Jews because Nazis believed that Jewish people were inferior and led
to Germany s decline in the 20th century. And to this day, dominant groups continue to discriminate
against minority groups.
This has been the way our world has functioned for centuries. The dominant group takes whatever

The Effect Of Milk And Milk Of Magnesia On Seed Germination
Background
A seed is the plants way of reproducing and allows the plant to produce plants of the same kind. A
seed is a developing plant that is bounded by a seed coat that covers the seed and usually has stored
food and nutrients inside. Seeds allow the plant to reproduce so they don t become extinct. Radish
seeds are rapid growing seeds that grow best in full sunlight with their own space, soil with a pH
level of 6.5 7, water with a pH level of 7, and cool/moist soil. Lemonade has a pH level of 2.5 and
is acidic, so the seed most likely will grow at a very slow rate compared to a seed with normal tap
water. Milk of magnesia has a pH level of 10.5 which is more basic and higher than the pH level
of water, the substance radish seeds grow best in. Therefore, the milk of magnesia might be too
strong for the seeds and will cause them to either grow extremely slow or not at all. The effect of
lemonade and milk of magnesia on seed germination can be measured by using a ruler and
measuring the sprout growth of each seed in centimeters daily.
Question
Will lemonade and milk of magnesia affect radish seed germination and growth?
Hypothesis
If I have 5ml of lemonade and 5ml of milk of magnesia and dilute each liquid with 5ml of tap water
and apply each solution twice to ten radish seeds, I believe the seeds will grow at a slower rate than
radish seeds with 10ml of tap water.

Ireland American Culture
There are many crucial aspects to keeping a culture alive. Alongside traditions, food, rituals, and
practices, music stands to be a vital facet to maintain the presence of a certain country or people
group. In Ireland, music was and is a huge part of how people communicate ideas, entertain
themselves, and engage with the community. Irelands musical history began thousands of years
ago but continues to stay a cherished part of Irish culture in its traditional form, as well as more
Americanized forms of original pieces. Irish folk musicunderwent many stages to become what it is
today in terms of notation, instrumentation, technological advancement, and purpose. From simple

Ireland was a colony under British rule and regulation for many centuries. This alone had a
major impact on the morale and sense of nationalism among the people of the country (Galvin,
Ireland s Musical Heritage). The Irish people also endured the Irish potato famine. During this
time period otherwise known as the Great Famine, Ireland experienced years of extreme
starvation and poverty, as well as disease and emigration. This had a great influence on Ireland s
development as a country. Instead of having positive relationships with music and art, among
other aspects of the culture, of course, the people of Ireland had a negative outlook on most of
life, and rightfully so. However, music and song were held to be an even more important aspect
of communication rather than spoken word (Mokyr, The Great Famine). The communication of
song was deeper and better exemplified the people of Ireland s sense of nationalism and pride in
their country. In 1921, Ireland signed a peace treaty with Great Britain that granted them
independence from British rule. This allowed Irish musicians and tradition keepers to really
express a new found sense of nationalism and pride in their country that was really displayed in
the compositions and pieces created around the time(Galvin, Ireland s Musical Heritage) Overall
the history of ireland played a huge role in the development of their musical styles, and it is clear
that with the great amount of emigration and the continued healing of the counland try from a once
starving country to a thriving place, that the music and inspiration behind Irish music has evolved,

Identity In Once Were Warriors
1. Introduction
Alan Duff s novel Once Were Warriors was published in 1990 and adapted to a film by director
Lee Tamahori in 1994. The controversial story about a Maori family made Duff a best selling
author and was greatly discussed after its publication (Martens 22f). The Maori family from
whose members points of view the story is told, is called Heke. Living in Pine Block, a fictional
ghetto like neighbourhood, the family s greatest concerns are unemployment, the parents
alcoholism, the children s rebellious behaviour, and the father s violence. Their situation seems
hopeless: Jake, the father, loses his job, drinks too much and repeatedly thrashes his wife Beth,
who, in the beginning, prefers drinking beer to caring for her six children. ... Show more content on

Readers expect the film to be faithful to its source material in ways that a filmic adaptation
simply cannot be faithful to a literary work, because [t]he demand for fidelity ignores the actual
process of making films, the important differences in modes of production (16). Stam and
Raengo go even further by claiming [a] filmic adaptation is automatically different and original
due to the change of medium (17). Another reason why adaptations are infidel to their source
material, apart from media characteristics, is money: While a novelist s choices are relatively
unconstrained by considerations of budget [...] films are from the outset immersed in technology
and commerce (16). A novelist only has to take his or her time to sit down and write a literary
work and find a publishing house to publish it, and therefore does not have to spend large amounts
of money. Yet, for a film to be made, numerous people are involved, for instance a screenwriter, a
director, cinematographers, and actors. Thus, Stam and Raengo assert that while mostly only one
individual works on a novel, numerous people are involved in creating a film (17). This also results
in many different opinions on setting, plot, characters, themes, lightning and so forth, which then

Thomas Rid’s Arguement on the Impossibility of Cyber War...
In the article, Thomas Rid s main argument other than the contention that cyber war will not happen
is that cyber war is completely misplaced if not entirely misunderstood. He argues that the concept
of cyber war is not in tandem with the historical definition and understanding of what constitutes
war. Rid s definition of war, borrowed from Carl von Clausewitz, is that war must constitute three
elements: violence, instrumental and political. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012)
Therefore, his main argument against the possibility for cyber war is premised on the idea that
cyber war can never have or express the above three elements. He further argues that at best, cyber
war can achieve some of the above criteria such as violence... Show more content on

He then argues that the actions of Anonymous and other such groups cannot be defined as war
because neither is violence involved nor does any of them openly accepts political attribution;
and their instrumentality is only limited to undermining authority. Secondly, He characterizes
cyber attacks as espionage because often times the main goal is to access secured or confidential
information. Lastly, he considers cyber attacks to be sabotage because the intended aim of the
attack is to disrupt or destroy military or economic installations. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take
Place, 2012) Ultimately, for Rid, what has ostensibly been considered to be cyber war are
basically manifestation of age old activities of espionage, sabotage and subversion.
Rid concludes with three points. First, he concludes that low tech cyber activities will have
greater impact on global political stability and in certain scenarios can even lead to conventional
war. He argues that the power of the internet to power social courses presents the greatest threat to
global stability even more than high tech capabilities used in sabotage; this is because mobilizing
and sustaining a movement via is now easier and requires less leadership hence social agitations
are stronger persists for longer. Secondly, he argues that sabotage as form of cyber attack will

occurs when an individual employee alters his or her personal values to conform to the values of
the organization. Rationalization occurs when an employee adjusts his or her perception of right

try to betray what they are doing is wrong, but this and this is the only way to accomplish the job.
After the resignation of Skilling, the chairman Kenneth Lay took the CEO position and instead of

The Issue of Transnational Aid Intervention
The issue of transnational aid intervention has become a worldwide topic for debate regarding its
role in ethics and legitimacy in international relations. Historically, international aid had been
provided by developed worlds governments. However, aid provided by the developed world became
problematic because of international treaties, violation of state sovereignty, and the spread of
capitalist enterprises (Willetts). In addition to, many of the developing world leaders, consider the
concept of aid intervention to be potentially threatening and an excuse for more powerful nations to
undermine and threaten their state sovereignty through a change in the nations economic and social
discourses (Willetts). In an attempt to counterbalance this predicament, institutions known as Non
Governmental Organizations (NGOs) were formed to emphasize humanitarian issues,
developmental aid and sustainable development (Willetts). An NGO is defined as a citizen based
association that operates independently of government, usually to deliver resources or serve some
social or political purpose (Willetts 1). Currently, NGOs play a crucial role in providing
mechanisms which enhance global human progress. To understand the work of NGOs one must
know the history of humanitarian aid and developmental assistance. History of Humanitarian Aid
and Developmental Assistance Humanitarian aid is defined as physical resources and or logistical
assistance intended to save lives, alleviate suffering, and

Comparing Logit And Probit Models Essay
In Logit and Probit models, a dependent variable takes only two values that represent the
occurrence of an event (yes or no) or a choice between two alternatives. In the current case, to
model choice status of each individual WTP for improved solid waste management respondents
differed in age, educational attainment, income, sex and other observable characteristics. These are
denoted by S. In the dichotomous choice method, individuals are assumed to have utility function,
U, income (I), and a set of conditioning factors (S): U(I; S)
Each respondent was confronted with a specified bid value, BID, which she or he may contribute
towards the management initiative. It is assumed that the individual would accept a suggested BID
to maximize his or her utility under the following condition and reject it otherwise (Hanemann,
1984):
U(1, I BID; S)+ ε1 ≥U(0, I; S) + ε0
In the current case, Оµ1 and Оµ0 are considered as independently distributed random variables
with zero means. Therefore, the probability that a household would decide to pay for the proposed
improved solid waste management for Delhi is the probability that the conditional indirect utility
function for proposed intervention is greater than the conditional indirect utility function for the
status quo. The dependent variable is dichotomous and equals 1, if the ith household is willing to
pay a bid and 0, otherwise. The general form of the estimation can be written as:

The Role Of Entertainment In The 70 s
Have you ever wondered what entertainment was like in the seventies and what you would do to

video games became more widespread, and movies became more action packed.
During the 1970s, the popularity of music skyrocketed. Popular music genres in the 70 s were
disco which was the most popular during the decade, progressive rock, punk rock and funk. Disco

Technical Limitations Of The Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist Zeitgeist is a German word that was first used in 1848. The literal translation thereof is
the spirit of the time. The Zeitgeist is the essence of an era, and is more than simply slapping a
few neon colours onto a design and saying that it captures the Zeitgeist of the 1980s. Zeitgeist
consists of the emotions, attitudes and morals that are at the heart of every person in a time
period. It is the main thought processes and beliefs that create and direct the actions and styles
of an era. Zeitgeist can be represented in the literature, philosophy and the designs of that time.
Zeitgeist can be crucial to designers as it can allow them to connect directly with the emotions
and values of their customers if they completely understand the Zeitgeist of the modern era. This
understanding also gives designers the opportunity to step away from the Zeitgeist and leave a
big impression on the consumer market. Zeitgeist is the product of the circumstances and
technical limitations of an era, as these can drastically influence the general outlook of the
people within a time period. For example, as explained by the Merriam Webster online
dictionary, the Zeitgeist of Victorian England was the belief in pure industrial progress, while the
Zeitgeist of 1980s United States was the belief in money and one s ability to spend it. Alexander
McQueen was a fashion designer born in London in 1960. Once he graduated with a Master of Arts

Black Males Able To Vote Essay
Ever since the first African Americans came to Jamestown in 1619, getting along has never

abolition of slavery, most people forget that some African Americans were free during that time,
but how free were they? Free African Americans in the Northern states were free, but had no
rights based on the voting chart, Charles Mackay s excerpt, and Charles Andrews excerpt. Out of
the three regions in the North, black males could only vote in one of them. Mackay recognizes
their freedom , but denies African Americans of their rights. Finally, Andrews who was the top
of his class explains how there s no place for his talent. Free African Americans may have had
freedom, but not the freedom that white males had, and certainly not the rights they needed to
fully function in society. In the voting chart, it shows if black males could vote or do jury duty
in each state in the North in 1860. The data it shows says that in the Mid Atlantic and Midwest,
most black males were either not permitted or were restricted to vote. Only in New England
could black male suffrage have any chance, even if it s only a little. Even when being free, black
males could only vote in five states, and do jury duty in one. They might have been free, but most...

Similarities Between Neo-Capitalism And Neo-Liberalism
Despite the fact that there are some similarities between neo realism and neo liberalism, it shall be
the differences between these theories that will be the focus of my attention, as it will help me to
determine more rigorously which of the arguments is the more convincing. The points of
comparison shall be the effects of the anarchical international system, and thus, the extent to which
cooperation can be achieved, the importance of relative and absolute gains, the conflict between
statecapabilities and interests, and finally the importance of institutions and regimes. It is important
to note that neo realism is often also called structural realism, and neo liberalismneo liberal
institutionalism. As the question prefers to call the theories neo realism and neo liberalism, this is
what I shall do throughout.
The first thing to consider is the effects of the international system, and what this means for the
prospects of cooperation. Lamy asserts that both [neo realism and neo liberalism] agree that the
international system is anarchic . I question that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

capabilities of other states because these are easier to measure than intentions. Nor am I

put it another way, maybe, as all liberalisms are prone to do, the problem with neo liberalism is
that it focuses on how the world ought to be, rather than how it is. I happen to believe that neo

How Education Has Changed Over The Years
Todays education has changed in many ways over the years. From the behavior of student s
caused by different parenting skills, how teachers teach their classes as well as student s ability to
use fundamentals, media and technology all play a role in how the world of education has evolved.
Robin Lawrence a thirteen year veteran teacher now a curriculum specialist at Bellaire Elementary
has a good insight into how the educational system has changed over time.
Past and present behavior have differed between the generations. Behavior in the past was much
better. In the past children did not have adult problems placed on them. Past parents had better
control to allow their children to be young. Past generations of parents did not have a lack of
parenting skills. Children were allowed to be carefree, unlike in the present day generations.
Today s generations have adult problems caused by poor or lack of parenting and therefore their
behavior reflect this. The poor behavior of today s generations has affected their education. The
poor behavior of one student affects the whole class. Mrs. Lawrence stated, Student behavior was
much better when I attended school than the behaviors I see in students present day. When asking
Mrs. Lawrence why she felt that student s behavior was better in the past than in the present she
stated that Students have so many adult burdens placed on then it is very difficult for them to be a

Raymond Chandler Preaches
Raymond Chandler was known to be one of the most prominent writers that revolved around the
novel writing of detective fiction. Writing crime stories would not be as advanced today without
his literary contribution to American style literature. His most famous novel, The Big Sleep,
established a highly prestigious artistic level; he would go on to forever change how detective
fictionnovels affected society, and how people view society from their own understanding. He
introduced an aspect that would question the approach of his article, The Simple Art of Murder, in
which he preaches and criticizes the authors who he believes are not disciplined enough to write a
mystery novel, by questioning their lack of detail and knowledge about the antagonist and the
insubordinate movement of the plot itself. As he goes on to create one of the most influential
novels of his time, he does not take the time to question his own masterpiece, believing that he

Although it is because of his love to Holly, all the things he does to the guiltless father shows his
violent and remorseless characteristic, which is quite different from the traditional hero in a
teen film. The whole story is based on a real life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his
girlfriend. To follow Starkweather s action, Kit also kills three bounty hunters, his friend Cato
and an innocent teenage couple who just arrive to visit Cato. It seems that killing people is his
way to solve problems. Compared to Badlands, Kit s idol Jim Stark still shows sympathy to his
best friend Plato, and tries to protect Plato until the end. The title Rebel without a cause may be
even more suitable to describe Kit s action that the film does not set a clear conflict between him
and the real world. What Kit mainly does is dresses a white T shirt, jeans and boots to look like
James Dean, and imitates some rebellious actions. Holly proves the reason for falling love with
him in her voice over at the beginning, He looked just like James Dean (Brickman 2014). The
initial attraction of Kit is basically due to the imagination of a dream lover from a simple and
pure 15 year old girl. After a period of killing and escaping, Holly pays less and less attention on
Kit, and she starts to refuse Kit s crazy rebel, which proves that Kit himself is not an engaging
character. Furthermore, as

Sports Complex ( Bsc )
Mark Lauber, a Wharton School of Business graduate, founded Branchburg Sports Complex
(BSC) in 2008 after selling his and his father s previous venture to another company. As a lover of

wow factor that these world renowned destinations possess to the realm of sports centers. BSC is a
78,000 square footfacility consisting of four indoor turf fields, basketball courts, training center,
multi level PlayMaze, arcade with redemption center, batting cages, and a three floor 9,000 square

The warehouse that Mark had sold off when he sold his previous company was still for sale after
being on the market for two years and having over $2M spent on getting it ready for sale. Since
Mark had an existing relationship with the landlord, the real estate market was at a record low, and
Mark didn t have to take a loan since he still had the cash from his previous venture. The landlord
was asking $9/square foot, tempting Mark to make the same mistake that the competition made.
Instead of accepting it and falling into the trap, Mark did extensive research on the town and
comps in the area and felt confident offering $4.50/square foot in four consecutive five year leases
starting at $4, then $4.25, all the way to $5 thus freeing up more working capital for the launch of
his business. Mark s homework on his timing paid off and locked down the warehouse he
previously owned but for his new venture.
Mark proceeded to hire consultants who specialized in sport center business start ups with his
extra working capital. They had never advised the start ups including a wow factor such as laser
tag or an arcade until they met Mark. Now every client who uses this firm is advised to diversify
their market by including the wow factor. The consultants conducted a feasibility test which gave
Mark a report consisting of the amount of children, adults, schools, competitors, and other factors in
the region he

Junior Year Essay
Junior Year Junior year was one of the best years of high school, but also one of the most
stressful years of high school. What made it great was prom and homecoming. Prom was so
much fun and my date was amazing. We also went together for homecoming too. That was the
first year going to prom and I knew it was going to be a good one.
Also, the boys had won the homecoming football ball game which was a great start to the
weekend! I had got a class ring and customized it the way I wanted and it turned out great. Now
that we were upperclassmen it felt good to be almost at the top. I still had my friends that I had
throughout high school and middle school. However, I did lose one of my closest friends sophomore
year when she moved to Texas.

Duck Goose Effect
She was one of the kids constantly trying to get one of the college students to pick her up and
when they would not she would start fake crying and stop once she realized it was not working.
While in the gym, whenever a student became hurt the teachers would not pick them up and would
simply tell them they are alright. I did not understand their reasoning for it because they were
willing to hold the kids just because, but once a child became hurt, they would not hold them and
would simply brush them off. Also, during gym time a game of Duck Duck Goose was started by
about five students. The girl who was it, became mad because while she was going around the
circle another student jumped up and started with her out the blue then the other girls

Descriptive Essay On The Night
The Watcher
Every night there was a shadow out the window and it just lingered there. It was there one
second and then it was gone. I had a feeling that someone was there but I didn t want to believe
it. The next night I waited until I saw the shadow again and this time I got up and quietly walked
out the front door. As I made my way around the yard I looked around to see if I could see
anything that might look suspicious. I got to my bedroom window where I saw the shadow the
previous nights but this time all I saw was footprints in the dirt and no one in sight. They were
not human footprints but much larger and more deformed. I heard a loud growling noise behind
me and I was far away from the front door. I turned around and saw the giant shadow that was
now a monster. I ran around the house as fast as I could and made it to the backyard. I jumped
the fence but the monster was still behind me. I made it to the back door but it was locked and
now I was trapped. Just when I thought I was about to get killed by the monster it fell to the
ground and when I opened my eyes a tall dark man was standing there with a sword. He had
killed the monster just a moment before it got to me. Then just as I was about to say something
to him he was gone just as fast as he was there. I stood frozen and speechless. As I walked back to
the house I was just silent and thinking about everything that just happened. I went back to my bed
and laid there until I fell asleep.
When I woke up the next

Medical-Legal Case Study
The status of this case is that we are awaiting the applicant to undergo an EMG of the upper
extremity as recommended by the Panel Qualified Medical Evaluator, Dr. Stephan Choi, in his
evaluation report dated December 14, 2016. Please recall, Dr. Choi requested an EMG of the right
upper extremity so he can rule out possible carpal tunnel release. He opined if the EMG of the right
upper extremity were to come back normal, the applicant would be deemed permanent and
stationary.
However, since the applicant s last evaluation with Dr. Choi, the applicant s attorney was having a

At this time, our office has been corresponding with applicant s attorney s office to resolve this

Meanwhile, I believe we do not need to procure an EMG of the upper extremity through the
request of the primary treating physician. As you know, this is a medical legal diagnostic request
for the purpose of a medical legal determination. Therefore, we do not need to go through the
utilization review process. In this instance where we are having a tough time finding a primary
treating physician for the applicant, I recommend we simply authorize a facility to perform the
EMG of the right upper extremity.
Personally, I would recommend Dr. Frank Cantrell, who is a well known physician in Fresno in
the field of neurology. I have seen many EMG/NCV studies from his office. I also confirmed Dr.
Cantrell is within our MPN. Therefore, it is my recommendation we send an authorization to Dr.

Human Rights During The War On Terror Essay
INTP 245 Research Essay
What role do Human Rights play in the war on terror? How has this affected the foreign policy of
the United States of America when combating this war?
When looking internationally over the past decade there has been an emergence of vague definable
terms that act as holistic guidelines for how international order should be constructed. One of these
terms is human rights which acts as a set of overarching guidelines that all States should aim for
and achieve. States have incorporated the ideals of human rights into their foreign policies in
various ways especially in the area of war and conflict. This essay will focus on what role human
rights play in the war on terror and how the human rights discourse has affected the United States of
America s (USA) foreign policy on the war on terror. This ultimately illustrates that the Western
construct of human rights is an invaluable policy tool as a mandate to interfere in other states
affairs and USA have continually utilised it as such a tool.
The concept of human rights has become ambiguous, with very little agreement regarding its
meaning and application internationally. The concept of human rights could be deemed as what
Gallie termed as an essentially contested concept. This argues that when it comes to certain
concepts there is just simply no one clearly definable general use that is widely agreed on. There
are a variety of elements and words that can be used to describe the concepts of human

Anne Bradstreet And Edwards Compare And Contrast
Through the fiery depths of Anne Bradstreet s burning home and the intensity of god s hands from
Jonathan Edwards. The Puritanism way is highly respected. Throughout Anne Bradstreet s poem
from 1612 1672 she talks about her life and how her house is suddenly burning down. As her
mind tosses around she starts to explain things about her life to herself. She realizes the positive
things in life. She wants to make it known that god is good to her and no matter what she will
always have a home and that being a Puritanmeans that god is there for her. Anne Bradstreetis very
similar to Jonathan Edwards because as he writes he talks about how being a Puritan will save
you and that not following god is the wrong choice because by following god you are safe and
that god is so powerful that if you do anything wrong by him you shall be punished. These stories
are similar but also different in many ways.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They both talk about how great he is and how powerful he is. They both strongly believe in what
the powerful god is capable of. Both Bradstreet and Edwards have similar writing styles and are
strong believers of what people should do and shouldn t do. As Bradstreet s house is burning
she expresses how she feels. As she thinks about what is happening she talks about it, when she
feels like she is being selfish she tells herself to remember that no matter what she will always
have a home and that she shouldn t think that way because even without her home she s at least
still alive and that eventually she will get everything back. As for Edwards he expresses that god
s hands are like fire because how powerful he is. God is perfect and although he is perfect he can
still get angry with people that make poor choices. He wants to encourage other Puritans to do
what is right because god can punish for anything that is wrong. Both describe the power of

Defining American Culture
Defining American and American Culture
After reading passages, short stories, a novel, and listening to class lectures, I have learned that
American really means whatever we truly want it to mean, in terms of how we want to define
ourselves as people and a country. Personally, I feel as though American can be defined as having
the right to speaking, writing, and acting in a way that we wish without being hindered, of course
within reason. Our country is based on freedom and how we have rights as Americans. Another
interesting term that ties in with American is the term American culture. Within this short essay, I
will define American culture; discuss an important point and example of how Emerson influenced
Whitman; and finally, a point about how the culture of Native Americans and the diversity of the
tribes can tie in with American culture.
To begin, I think that the question must be asked What is American culture? Is there one absolute
definition to American culture? Personally, I connect this definition to my definition of American. I
believe American culture is what we want it to be. Our country is built on diversity and
immigration, this is our foundation. The country began with Native ... Show more content on

While Walt Whitman was trying to start a writing career, he attended a lecture held by Emerson;
Emerson s lecture was about how we as Americans need to start our own ways of writing because
we focus too much on European style (Permenter). Take a look at Whitman and everything that he
accomplished. Although he was not the first American poet, he was one of the first famous
American poets. His Leaves of Grass represented a revolutionary departure in American literature
(2992), meaning that the poem and its ideas were new to the Americans. He also opened the field of
American and ultimately of modern poetry (2992). Whitman s actions are truly what American and
American culture stands

Does Medea Have No Sympathy For Jason Essay
Although we may sympathise with Medea s plight, Jason is worthy of nothing more than our
contempt Do you agree?
Euripides Greek tragedy, Medea follows the feud of the relationship between the protagonist Medea,
and the antagonist, her disloyal husband Jason. Although Jason s actions are unforgiveable, his
decisions to leave Medea did not authorise the actions of revenge that Medea took to guarantee
Jason s complete downfall. Medea s situation of exile that she has been placed in is a result of
her lover Jason s decision to leave her and marry a younger female, as a result of this it helps the
reader sympathise and have remorse with Medea, but does not lead us to approve of her actions
of revenge, anger and vengeance. From a readers perspective Jason deserves absolutely little to no
sympathy for his actions against Medea. Medea saw the injustices of Jason go unpunished, so she
took matters into her own hands, so that Jason may finally regret his decision and ... Show more

Euripides helps position the reader to further show no sympathy for Jason for the actions from
Medea. Whether killing his two children or killing Jason s love interest Glauche, the reader is
reminded that even without them, Jason will have a more sustainable life than Medea. In Corinth,
there was no gender equality; there were no shared rights. The simple pecking order was that men
were far more superior to women, who ultimately were seen as inferior compared to men. Women
had no rights, thus meaning they could not have their voice heard, they were rarely allowed to do

A literary reproach of the book Moral Disorder, a collection of short stories by Margaret Atwood
examines the concept of the ethics of care, the relationship between patriarchal systems and feminist
thought, and the study of narrative fiction. The topic of feminine domestic responsibility in the
work is examined, focusing on several stories including The Bad News, The Art of Cooking and
Serving, and The Headless Horseman.
Margaret Atwood s 2006 collection of linked stories, Moral Disorder, deals with the complex ethics
of responsibility, mainly the conflict between selfishness and sacrifice that can arise within the
praxis of care. While a few stories were distributed before and independently, their get together in
this single accrual delivers a brought together cross examination of providing care. To be sure, the
requirement for mind commands these stories: the storyteller or hero looks after an assortment of
relatives, companions, outsiders, and even creatures. Be that as it may, in these stories the
requirements of care are never entirely met, and none of the people flourish because of the care they
get. I read the accumulation as an abstract commitment to ethics of care exchange that attracts
thoughtfulness regarding the misfortunes and mischief that can accompany commitment. In this
paper, she investigated how and why providing care is so frequently perilous in these stories and
what the dangerous circumstances that these stories pass on regarding the bigger perceptive of
care, including yet reaching out past their scholarly commitment.
Atwood s stories model a compelling theory of care relations as necessary and unavoidable but also
distressing and debilitating, thereby deepening readers understanding of the difficulty of care in

The Carson Show
One of the greatest talk shows of all time, The Tonight show has been entertaining Americans for
more than 60 years. The show, produced by NBC Productions, first hit the air under the name
Tonight in 1954. The show then settled on the name The Tonight Show in 1962. Among the name
change there were many additional changes that have taken place in the shows running. The show
originally had two openings, one for a news affiliate that began at 11:15 p.m. EST and another for
those viewers who joined in at 11:30. In 1965, then host Johnny Carson refused to appear until
11:30, thus the show s start time changed to 11:30 p.m. EST. This was not the only time that the
shows aired time had changed, in fact the aired time as well as length time changed multiple times

Each host brought a unique flare to the show, however there are four hosts; Jonny Carson, Jay
Leno, Conan O Brien and Jimmy Fallon, that gave the show its superior qualities, making it the
longest airing talk show of all time. Carson who hosted the show from 1962 to1992 is the
longest serving host to date. He was the Gold Standard of hosts. He exemplified charisma and
depth. He could do political and social commentary, comedy skits and handle all kinds of
interviews from the serious to the silly. Carson served as the role model for all other American
talk show hosts who followed him. Leno who hosted the show from 1992 to 2009 replaced
Carson after he retired. The format of the show remained largely unchanged, consisting primarily
of an opening humorous monologue, followed by several celebrity interviews, comedy sketches
and musical numbers. Though I don t feel Leno was as comical as Carson and his interview skill
were lacking, he had an aura that drew people in. This likability is what causes him to receive a
second tenure from 2010 to 2014, after O Brien left the network due to scheduling

  • 3. The Similarities between Angelina Jolie and Beowulf Essay Throughout time, heroes have stereotypically been described as men who possess qualities such as courage, strength, leadership, and determination. Certainly, many of these characteristics have changed as time has passed. In modern society, heroes can simply be average people who sacrifice their own happiness for the welfare of others and do their best to create a change in the world. Beowulf, an extraordinary warrior in the Anglo Saxon period, is an epic herobecause of his pride, strength and courage. He fought many battles in order to protect the Danes from chaos. Angelina Jolie, like Beowulf, is a hero because she defeats every impediment to help and fight against inequality. Heroes do not wait still in one place.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He did not give up while fighting with the brawny monster Grendel, even though Grendel clutched at [him] with his claws (Beowulf 428). According to Milena Veselinovico, the author of leading women, Angelina Jolie has risked her life to protect refugees in many countries in Africa. She went to Sudan during a tremendous conflict and Chad during the civil war. She could have been assassinated, but her thirst of justice could not be sate easily; she kept helping no matter the circumstances. In able to be a hero, one must be internally strong to triumph obstacles life brings and never back down when conflicts arrive. Heroes often combat injustice to win equality and peace. Beowulf saves the Danes by fighting the monster Grendel, but Angelina Jolie saves refugees by fighting the figurative monster of inequality. In the mead hall, the place the Anglo Saxon warriors celebrated their battles, everyone was terrified to fight Grendel because he was powerful and seemingly undefeatable. Beowulf fought the abominable beast and obtained the glory of tranquility for the Danes because he wanted to live in greatness and courage (368 369). Angelina Jolie keeps fighting with the invincible monster of inequality that is happening in some parts of Africa and gives part of her fortune to refugees who suffer from hunger and persecution. A hero does not need to fight a monster, sometimes the injustice is the monster itself. As time has passed, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Stockholm Syndrome Research Paper A teenager is taken from her home in early morning. She is so scared that she does exactly what the kidnapper says and follows him out. As the months go by, the victim and her kidnapper develop a very close bond and they begin to care for each other in a nurturing relationship. This situation probably sounds insane, but it turns out that this happens often to a victim. The victim becomes relieved after the kidnapper threatens her and decides to spare her life. The victim begins to feel gratitude because the kidnapper has given her life and the kidnapper sees it at a real bond forming. Even though the victim wants to despise the kidnapper for taking her hostage, her longing to survive overpowers her hatred and Stockholm Syndrome is developed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hostages do not fully understand what has happened and why they do not hate the kidnappers. They begin to wonder what could have caused them to have sympathy or to favor the kidnapper. It is very had for the former hostage to get a complete answer of exactly why the condition occurs because it is very complicated and hard to understand. Over the years of studying the psychological condition, several factors have been discovered. The hostages begin to think of the kidnapper in a more positive way after they are given a good place to stay or even after the kidnapper gives an act of kindness by not killing the hostage but simply injuring them. The hostages begin to sympathize for the captor or develop a relationship once they begin to understand what might have made the kidnapper do this crime, and after living with each other for a long period of time, they realize how much they have in common. Stockholm Syndrome normally occurs because the hostages feel that they must pretend to be on the kidnapper s side or even do acts of kindness for them so that the kidnappers are less likely to harm them or kill them. After the long period of pretending, they begin to believe that it is the right thing to do and they fall into practice of it. After they develop this condition, they have symptoms of the following: resisting attempts of rescue, defending the captor, refusing to testify against captor or running away from them and they become in need of treatment. Treatment is key to adjusting to the life the captive had before the hostage event. Obtaining counselling from psychiatrists and guidance counselors can be very effective to help the former hostage remember how life was before and why they are having these feelings which can help make the feelings go away. Support from family members and friends and talking about the situation with them can help the former hostage to remove ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Summary Of Edward Morgan Forster sThe Machine Stops As our society continues to develop, the advanced technology has changed people s lives in many respects. When people enjoy the convenience of using touchpad during class, contacting a person who lives a thousand miles away via FaceTime, and storing live data in the online cloud, there will be a long term and serious consequences resulting from overuse of technology. About a century ago, Edward Morgan Forster, in his short novel The Machine Stops, has already accurately predicted humans future through presenting an image of how human s exponentially increasing dependence on technology makes them weak, and ultimately decease. The story happens in the future where human beings who has lost their ability to live on the surface of earth live in a subterranean cell, with all physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs met by the Machine. With the Machine, people believe they live in a perfect world. All of the people believe they live in a perfect world, except Kuno, who finds the flaw that can destroy the society. Kuno s concern is treated as madness by his mother Vashti. Forster s theme concerns envisioning the earth in the future when the use of technology is at its climax and every sphere of life is dependent on it. He exploits his idea by illustrating that the development of the sophisticated technology will ultimately control human beings and annihilate their ability to think critically and live independently, making them treat the Machine like a god. Therefore, through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Torture Of Torture Hitchens Summary In Hitchens s story, the majority of his detail is dedicated to his personal experience. Hitchens was brave enough to actually forbearance the torture of waterboarding. I was very gentle yet firmly grabbed from behind, pulled to my feet, pinioned by my wrist (which were then cuffed to a belt), and cut off from sunlight by having a black hood pulled over my face. (Hitchens, page 617). At this time, the trained men are starting to put Hitchens in the first steps of the torture. Arms already lost to me, I wasn t able to flail as I pushed onto a sloping board and positioned with my head lower than my heart. (Hitchens, page 617). Hitchens has been placed into position to where he cannot move, or try to fight the integrator s, to start the torturing. This is when the water starts getting poured onto his face. The fear of drowning is an understatement when it comes to water boarding, because drowning is actually taking place. He began to hold is breath, for as long as he could, before having to exhale. With exhaling comes inhaling, and when he inhaled, the hood pulled over his face began to suction to his face. The inhalation brought the damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge, wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly clamped over my face. (Hitchens, page 618). Basically, what he is saying is that the suctioning of the hood is making it even harder to attempt to breath. With all of this being said, Hitchens did not last long before using the pre arranged ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The War on Drugs Essay The War on Drugs To fully understand the significance and the seriousness of a War one must first fully understand the reasons that caused it in the first place. In this specific case the solution begins with several important yet seemingly simple questions...What is marijuana? How is it used? And why is it so coveted and widely distributed in Jamaica as well as the rest of the world?... All these questions help clarify the reasoning behind the war on drugs and further investigation shows how Jamaica ends up being an important country in this puzzle as well. Lets begin with the first question, (What is marijuana), of course the dictionary definition is simply put, a preparation of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, for use as an ... Therefore, marijuana (because it fits into this category) can be a very profitable in its import and export for a country even if it is outlawed as illegal. One country that has struggled endlessly with this drug, its illegal usage, and decriminalization is Jamaica. Using Jamaica as a model for the more in depth study of the war against drugs proves to be most interesting in that Jamaica has had a long and economically fluctuating history with marijuana. Henceforth, to lead us into the study of Jamaica and its legalization and decimalization of marijuana that can be used on both a large and small scale we turn to a reliable inside source of Jamaican journalist. Where they discover that the strong marijuana presence in Jamaica has been an issue which has sparked some controversy and questioning, regarding the decriminalization of marijuana amongst not only Jamaicans but people all over the world. Many people have asked the question, how can marijuana be so abundant and openly used in a country and yet not be legal or at least decriminalized? Jamaican journalists, through research, surveys, and most importantly experiences with the culture itself, address in a special and unique way the issue of marijuana and how it has been related differently to the varying ... These are the person centered and psychodynamic perspectives. I seek to explore my development and attunement to the concepts we have been introduced to by facilitating my own learning. This piece is my own reflexive account on my journey so far. In my development to date, and the feelings of achievement and failure through actions of my early adolescence. Becoming a helper is a longstanding ambition of mine, formulated by my desire to help others. My experiences over the last twenty five years, have taught me that I am sometimes over analytical in my thoughts, overly concerned about others, I can end up neglecting myself. Aligned with the ideas of socialism , Blair supports a concept called the Third Way which is based on the idea of combining center right economics and center left social policies ( The Third Way , n.d).The idea was developed by Anthony Giddens, the sociologist and director of the London School of Economics, he argued that the reformist governments could no longer rely only on the ideas of complete social and economic state control in the face of the forces and finances of globalization. Therefore, Giddens proposed an idea that would support center policies, but also remain committed to radical measures. Blair refers to the third way as his version of socialism which is in favor of economic growth and entrepreneurship as well greater state intervention to improve social justice and equality among civilians ( UK Politics: What is the Third Way, n.d.). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In spite of their appearance, these massive spans serve no practical function. They are strictly ornamental and do not help support the structure, which was the first object built to withstand the forces of the wind as well as gravity. Only now, more than one hundred years later, can we see the tower in context. It has aged gracefully and no longer stands in contrast to the ornate architecture that has survived in modern Paris. Once the exposition was over, plans were made to destroy the Eiffel Tower. The monument that brought so much displeasure because it represented that which was modern, new, and very un Parisian, was actually saved by technological advances. Engineers realized that the structure would make a perfect broadcasting tower. The tower gets its name from Gustave Eiffel, the man who designed the monument, and also did the girder work for the Statue of Liberty now in New York harbor. Looking at its open frame, it comes as no surprise that Eiffel was a bridge engineer when he entered the competition along with 100 other people to design this lasting monument to French culture. In fact, it took just two years and 300 steel workers for it to reach its pre television height of 984 feet. The construction work began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31 1889. Hughes compares the ups and downs of growing up, to that of a stair by first indicating that life, ain t been no crystal stair but had, tacks splinters and torn up boards (1 5). • 15. The Change Is Unexpected Or Planned Departure Of A Chief... Every nonprofit organization undergoes leadership changes at some point. Whether the change is unexpected or planned, it can result in a period of dangerous organizational uncertainty or offer opportunities for greater accomplishments. Without a transition plan in place, a sudden or planned departure of a chief executive officer, chief financial officer or other upper managementofficial can seriously degrade the performance of a nonprofit organization. Experienced transition leadership and adequate planning will minimize disruption and maintain the mission of the organization, as well as offer the possibilities of further growth and development. More than 3,000 executives of nonprofit organizations participated in a national study conducted by CompassPoint and the Meyer Foundation in 2011 (Cornelius, Moyers, Bell, 2011, p. 2). Sixty seven percent of these executives indicated they plan on leaving their organizations within five years (See Table). In addition, this survey revealed that despite 15 years of attention to the issue, a number of key practices associated with effective executive transition are not widespread. Executives and boards are still reluctant to talk proactively about succession and just 17% of organizations have a documented succession plan (Cornelius et al., 2011, p. 3). When adding unexpected executive departures to these statistics, the ramifications of insufficient transitional planning are alarming. It was reported in the news ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Regulations For The Army Of The United States Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States The Blue Book Barron Friedrich Wilhelm Steuben wrote the regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States in the winter of 1778. The Continental Army spent that winter at Valley Forge under the command of General George Washington. The army was a group of raw untrained farmers and to this point in the war had perfected only one militarymaneuver, the retreat. The true history of the Barron s military experience is in question. For the beleaguered Continental Armythe Barron and what became to be known as the U.S. Army s blue book of drill and ceremony could not have come at a more crucial time for General Washington and his army. The overall idea of the Barron s regulations for the army was to bring standardization of how the army performed every aspect of their daily life. The idea of standardization to any army is paramount to its success. The Continental Army at this point had very little if any among its ranks. • 19. Omnivore s Dilemma Vs Blue Future The sources of food and water problems are vast. Some of the sources are using corn as an alternative to feeding animals such as cows and pigs. As Michael Pollan states in his book, The Omnivore s Dilemma, corn was being mass produced after world war II after there were weapons of mass destruction with high nitrogen content that were the used as fertilizers. The issues mentioned in The Omnivore s Dilemma and Blue Future by Maude Barlow share the same amount of issues in water and ability of the government to regulate farming practices and companies that are leading to these issues. Both books mention the major source of water loss as mass production of crops and meat. I was astonished by how accurate this course was to what I experienced. Especially after Barlow was explaining the issues with water and after we saw a movie that depicted what people were experiencing in Kenya. • 20. Jurassic Park, By John Hammond Essay From the very first, Welcome to Jurassic Park, given by John Hammond, audiences have been captivated with the idea of dinosaurs. Steven Spielberg s Jurassic Park series has a plethora of strong female characters, from Dr. Ellie Sattler to the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex herself. In 2015, the blockbuster film Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow, hit theaters, adding itself to the dinosaurlineage. The plot takes place twenty two years after the first film. The park has now reopened, and there is no room for error, especially with the women depicted in the movie. Jurassic Park has a reputation of giving audiences strong female characters both human and dinosaur. With Jurassic World comes a whole set of new characters, new creatures, and new couture. However, despite modern advances with feminism, Jurassic World does not quite meet the standards Jurassic Park first presented in 1993. While World definitely does have feminist attributes, and even has elements of the femme fatale, the film takes a long step backwards from the first film. Fans from the beginning of the series will automatically know that all the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are female. They will also remember Ian Malcolm s realization: God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs, which is quickly followed up by Ellie saying, Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the Earth, followed by a worried look from Malcolm and a smile ... • 22. Competition Between Groups Over Land And Basic Resources As long as humans have been alive and able to communicate, there has been competition between groups. While this may have begun with competition over land and basic resources, competition between groups has developed into a complex social structure. After some time, one group comes out on top. This dominant group then has a self validated foundation of which to build discriminatory acts. The dominant group has one or more desirable traits or resources that the minority groupdoes not have, so this dominant group believes itself to be superior to the minority group. This structure of competition has led to hate, discrimination, and violence between groups. Group competition did not end over a battle over resources and land. Groups have found more ambiguous ways to identify themselves as superior. Disagreements between groups over values, religious beliefs, and traditions have led to discrimination, violence, war, and genocide. Romans killed Christians because Romans believed Christians were religious fanatics. Sunnis and Shi ites have fought since Muhammad s death over who they believed was the rightful predecessor. German Nazis annihilated six million Jews because Nazis believed that Jewish people were inferior and led to Germany s decline in the 20th century. And to this day, dominant groups continue to discriminate against minority groups. This has been the way our world has functioned for centuries. • 24. The Effect Of Milk And Milk Of Magnesia On Seed Germination Background A seed is the plants way of reproducing and allows the plant to produce plants of the same kind. A seed is a developing plant that is bounded by a seed coat that covers the seed and usually has stored food and nutrients inside. Seeds allow the plant to reproduce so they don t become extinct. Radish seeds are rapid growing seeds that grow best in full sunlight with their own space, soil with a pH level of 6.5 7, water with a pH level of 7, and cool/moist soil. Lemonade has a pH level of 2.5 and is acidic, so the seed most likely will grow at a very slow rate compared to a seed with normal tap water. Milk of magnesia has a pH level of 10.5 which is more basic and higher than the pH level of water, the substance radish seeds grow best in. Therefore, the milk of magnesia might be too strong for the seeds and will cause them to either grow extremely slow or not at all. The effect of lemonade and milk of magnesia on seed germination can be measured by using a ruler and measuring the sprout growth of each seed in centimeters daily. Question Will lemonade and milk of magnesia affect radish seed germination and growth? Hypothesis If I have 5ml of lemonade and 5ml of milk of magnesia and dilute each liquid with 5ml of tap water and apply each solution twice to ten radish seeds, I believe the seeds will grow at a slower rate than radish seeds with 10ml of tap water. This had a great influence on Ireland s development as a country. Instead of having positive relationships with music and art, among other aspects of the culture, of course, the people of Ireland had a negative outlook on most of life, and rightfully so. However, music and song were held to be an even more important aspect of communication rather than spoken word (Mokyr, The Great Famine). The communication of song was deeper and better exemplified the people of Ireland s sense of nationalism and pride in their country. Readers expect the film to be faithful to its source material in ways that a filmic adaptation simply cannot be faithful to a literary work, because [t]he demand for fidelity ignores the actual process of making films, the important differences in modes of production (16). Stam and Raengo go even further by claiming [a] filmic adaptation is automatically different and original due to the change of medium (17). Another reason why adaptations are infidel to their source material, apart from media characteristics, is money: While a novelist s choices are relatively unconstrained by considerations of budget [...] films are from the outset immersed in technology and commerce (16). A novelist only has to take his or her time to sit down and write a literary work and find a publishing house to publish it, and therefore does not have to spend large amounts of money. Yet, for a film to be made, numerous people are involved, for instance a screenwriter, a director, cinematographers, and actors. In the article, Thomas Rid s main argument other than the contention that cyber war will not happen is that cyber war is completely misplaced if not entirely misunderstood. He argues that the concept of cyber war is not in tandem with the historical definition and understanding of what constitutes war. Rid s definition of war, borrowed from Carl von Clausewitz, is that war must constitute three elements: violence, instrumental and political. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012) Therefore, his main argument against the possibility for cyber war is premised on the idea that cyber war can never have or express the above three elements. He further argues that at best, cyber war can achieve some of the above criteria such as violence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then argues that the actions of Anonymous and other such groups cannot be defined as war because neither is violence involved nor does any of them openly accepts political attribution; and their instrumentality is only limited to undermining authority. Secondly, He characterizes cyber attacks as espionage because often times the main goal is to access secured or confidential information. Lastly, he considers cyber attacks to be sabotage because the intended aim of the attack is to disrupt or destroy military or economic installations. (Rid, Cyber War Will Not Take Place, 2012) Ultimately, for Rid, what has ostensibly been considered to be cyber war are basically manifestation of age old activities of espionage, sabotage and subversion. Rid concludes with three points. First, he concludes that low tech cyber activities will have greater impact on global political stability and in certain scenarios can even lead to conventional war. He argues that the power of the internet to power social courses presents the greatest threat to global stability even more than high tech capabilities used in sabotage; this is because mobilizing and sustaining a movement via is now easier and requires less leadership hence social agitations are stronger persists for longer. Historically, international aid had been provided by developed worlds governments. However, aid provided by the developed world became problematic because of international treaties, violation of state sovereignty, and the spread of capitalist enterprises (Willetts). In addition to, many of the developing world leaders, consider the concept of aid intervention to be potentially threatening and an excuse for more powerful nations to undermine and threaten their state sovereignty through a change in the nations economic and social discourses (Willetts). In an attempt to counterbalance this predicament, institutions known as Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) were formed to emphasize humanitarian issues, developmental aid and sustainable development (Willetts). An NGO is defined as a citizen based association that operates independently of government, usually to deliver resources or serve some social or political purpose (Willetts 1). Comparing Logit And Probit Models Essay In Logit and Probit models, a dependent variable takes only two values that represent the occurrence of an event (yes or no) or a choice between two alternatives. In the current case, to model choice status of each individual WTP for improved solid waste management respondents differed in age, educational attainment, income, sex and other observable characteristics. These are denoted by S. In the dichotomous choice method, individuals are assumed to have utility function, U, income (I), and a set of conditioning factors (S): U(I; S) Each respondent was confronted with a specified bid value, BID, which she or he may contribute towards the management initiative. It is assumed that the individual would accept a suggested BID to maximize his or her utility under the following condition and reject it otherwise (Hanemann, 1984): U(1, I BID; S)+ Оµ1 ≥U(0, I; S) + Оµ0 In the current case, Оµ1 and Оµ0 are considered as independently distributed random variables with zero means. Therefore, the probability that a household would decide to pay for the proposed improved solid waste management for Delhi is the probability that the conditional indirect utility function for proposed intervention is greater than the conditional indirect utility function for the status quo. • 35. Technical Limitations Of The Zeitgeist Zeitgeist Zeitgeist is a German word that was first used in 1848. The literal translation thereof is the spirit of the time. The Zeitgeist is the essence of an era, and is more than simply slapping a few neon colours onto a design and saying that it captures the Zeitgeist of the 1980s. Zeitgeist consists of the emotions, attitudes and morals that are at the heart of every person in a time period. It is the main thought processes and beliefs that create and direct the actions and styles of an era. Zeitgeist can be represented in the literature, philosophy and the designs of that time. Zeitgeist can be crucial to designers as it can allow them to connect directly with the emotions and values of their customers if they completely understand the Zeitgeist of the modern era. This understanding also gives designers the opportunity to step away from the Zeitgeist and leave a big impression on the consumer market. Zeitgeist is the product of the circumstances and technical limitations of an era, as these can drastically influence the general outlook of the people within a time period. • 40. How Education Has Changed Over The Years Todays education has changed in many ways over the years. From the behavior of student s caused by different parenting skills, how teachers teach their classes as well as student s ability to use fundamentals, media and technology all play a role in how the world of education has evolved. Robin Lawrence a thirteen year veteran teacher now a curriculum specialist at Bellaire Elementary has a good insight into how the educational system has changed over time. Past and present behavior have differed between the generations. Behavior in the past was much better. In the past children did not have adult problems placed on them. Past parents had better control to allow their children to be young. Past generations of parents did not have a lack of parenting skills. Children were allowed to be carefree, unlike in the present day generations. Today s generations have adult problems caused by poor or lack of parenting and therefore their behavior reflect this. The poor behavior of today s generations has affected their education. The poor behavior of one student affects the whole class. Mrs. Lawrence stated, Student behavior was much better when I attended school than the behaviors I see in students present day. When asking Mrs. Lawrence why she felt that student s behavior was better in the past than in the present she stated that Students have so many adult burdens placed on then it is very difficult for them to be a child. Writing crime stories would not be as advanced today without his literary contribution to American style literature. His most famous novel, The Big Sleep, established a highly prestigious artistic level; he would go on to forever change how detective fictionnovels affected society, and how people view society from their own understanding. He introduced an aspect that would question the approach of his article, The Simple Art of Murder, in which he preaches and criticizes the authors who he believes are not disciplined enough to write a mystery novel, by questioning their lack of detail and knowledge about the antagonist and the insubordinate movement of the plot itself. As he goes on to create one of the most influential novels of his time, he does not take the time to question his own masterpiece, believing that he exhibits the appropriate amount of knowledge and detail to write an influential mystery novel. How has this affected the foreign policy of the United States of America when combating this war? When looking internationally over the past decade there has been an emergence of vague definable terms that act as holistic guidelines for how international order should be constructed. One of these terms is human rights which acts as a set of overarching guidelines that all States should aim for and achieve. States have incorporated the ideals of human rights into their foreign policies in various ways especially in the area of war and conflict. This essay will focus on what role human rights play in the war on terror and how the human rights discourse has affected the United States of America s (USA) foreign policy on the war on terror. This ultimately illustrates that the Western construct of human rights is an invaluable policy tool as a mandate to interfere in other states affairs and USA have continually utilised it as such a tool. The concept of human rights has become ambiguous, with very little agreement regarding its meaning and application internationally. The concept of human rights could be deemed as what Gallie termed as an essentially contested concept. This argues that when it comes to certain concepts there is just simply no one clearly definable general use that is widely agreed on. Our country is based on freedom and how we have rights as Americans. Another interesting term that ties in with American is the term American culture. Within this short essay, I will define American culture; discuss an important point and example of how Emerson influenced Whitman; and finally, a point about how the culture of Native Americans and the diversity of the tribes can tie in with American culture. To begin, I think that the question must be asked What is American culture? Is there one absolute definition to American culture? Personally, I connect this definition to my definition of American. The topic of feminine domestic responsibility in the work is examined, focusing on several stories including The Bad News, The Art of Cooking and Serving, and The Headless Horseman. Margaret Atwood s 2006 collection of linked stories, Moral Disorder, deals with the complex ethics of responsibility, mainly the conflict between selfishness and sacrifice that can arise within the praxis of care. While a few stories were distributed before and independently, their get together in this single accrual delivers a brought together cross examination of providing care. To be sure, the requirement for mind commands these stories: the storyteller or hero looks after an assortment of relatives, companions, outsiders, and even creatures. Be that as it may, in these stories the requirements of care are never entirely met, and none of the people flourish because of the care they get. I read the accumulation as an abstract commitment to ethics of care exchange that attracts thoughtfulness regarding the misfortunes and mischief that can accompany commitment.
